Following his golden efforts at London 2012, the 27-year-old has endured a miserable time, splitting with his coach, losing sponsorship and suffering a number of niggling injuries.
Although Rutherford has made himself unavailable for the Glasgow International Match on Saturday because of a minor problem picked up during training, he insists he will be back in three weeks.
"Unfortunately I have to withdraw from the Sainsbury's Glasgow International Match," Rutherford said.
"It's nothing bad and it has been a tough call to make, but I know it's the right decision in order not to risk a serious injury."
Rutherford, who had been due to compete for the Great Britain team in the event at the Emirates Arena, said he would be fit for the meeting in Birmingham on February 15.
"My appearance in the long jump at the Sainsbury's Indoor Grand Prix next month won't be in danger," he said.
"Even if I can't make it to Glasgow this indoor season, I'll be back this summer and will fight for the long jump title at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow."
He has decided to compete indoors for the first time in four years in 2014, but remained non-committal over whether he will go to the World Indoor Championships in Sopot, Poland, in March.
