Mayweather: gone for good

So this is it, Floyd Mayweather is going to retire.

I was in Cuba learning how to salsa dance - more of that later - when the news broke, but having had time to reflect on it, I am not surprised at all.

And I have to say, I believe it. I know a lot of people will think it's another publicity stunt, but looking at it, where has Mayweather got to go?

There are no more challenges out there for him. Whatever your opinion about the decision, he beat Oscar de la Hoya and he outclassed Ricky Hatton, both of who were his only major threats at the time. I know a rematch with de la Hoya was talked about, but he will be up against a bigger man who nearly beat him last time, so why go there again?

Miguel Cotto is about, but does Floyd need that? I don't think so. He has won world titles at five different weights, he is undefeated in 39 fights and has more cash than Evander Holyfield had, so maybe the mental edge that he would need for De La Hoya II or Cotto is not there anymore. It's all very well having natural talent but you've still got to work bloody hard, and for all his flashness and brashness, he did just that.

He has beat everybody and had a great career and the one thing we can say about Floyd is, he's pretty smart. Very few get out of the game at the very top, especially undefeated, and he already has interests outside the sport. He has his record label, he's done Dancing With The Stars (which, after my salsa lesson, I can safely say I will not be doing), he's done WWE and is no stranger to the world of showbiz.

Bored

Which all suggests to me, we have seen the last of Floyd Mayweather in a boxing ring. In time, like him or loathe him, will be recognised as one of the greats. Mind you, it was not always easy. We never gave up on him here on Sky Sports, but I remember going with Ian Darke to places like Fresno and Portland, just because they wouldn't let him box in Las Vegas.

That was Floyd's biggest problem, that he got to the very top, but at times bored his way there. Maybe he was too good, maybe it was because he didn't want to get into a war and always had one eye on life after boxing. If both of those were true, it makes even more sense that this retirement announcement is final.

What it does is leave us looking for a new pound-for-pound king because Mayweather was up there, head and shoulders above the rest, probably since the demise of Roy Jones Jr.

It is nice to have one guy at the top of the pile who we can all say is number one - just what we need in the heavyweights - but now it will be good to see the others scrapping it out for that vacant title.

Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto and our own Joe Calzaghe will fancy their chances, but one man who I think is in with a shout is my old mate Kelly Pavlik.

Gauge

I thought he looked very, very good against Gary Lockett. OK, you couldn't help feeling that Lockett was out of his depth and lucky to get a world title shot like that, but how many times have we seen champions slipping up in fights they are supposed to win? And sometimes, those fights can be a better gauge of just how good a guy is.

Pavlik was known for those two wins over Jermain Taylor and coming back from the brink in the first one, but sometimes when you are the underdog and certainly when you have been put on your backside, you have nothing to lose and fight that way. When you are the overwhelming favourite and expected to win, that can be a tougher prospect.

But Kelly clearly hadn't cut any corners and boy did we see just how hard he can hit. OK, he might not have the silky skills of Mayweather or de la Hoya, but he has a heart the size of a mountain and makes the most of what he's got. He trains really hard, is a grafter and a real blue-collar champ. It's nice to see that hard work can pay off.

Also he is entertaining. His fans - almost all of Youngstown, Ohio, judging by that first Taylor fight I was at - love him and he has taken America by storm. There will be no danger of Vegas snubbing him, because he is a true fighting man and already a people's champ. I would love to see him fight Calzaghe (they could make it at super-middle) and I am sure he would be up for it.

He might not be the next Floyd Mayweather, but if you're looking for a man that can, for one reason or another, become the world number one, don't rule out The Ghost!

Salsa

Now to my dancing exploits in Cuba. I should tell you all that on July 12 I am leading a world record attempt at the world's biggest ever salsa dance, when we hope to have over 1,000 people strutting their stuff up in the north east.

Don't ask me how I got involved in this because, as my wife will tell anyone, I have two left feet, but it's part of the Vamos! concert we have coming up in Newcastle. I suppose my Cuban connections helped, but there I was whisked off by the theatre and culture people to meet and greet - and take in a salsa lesson - in Cuba.

I did get time to drop in on my coaches' families to tell them they are all doing fine and I also managed to drop in on Teófilo Stevenson and Jorge Guzman, head of the Cuban Boxing Association. It was only a flying visit of four days and I have to say I wasn't that sad to leave, particularly when Teófilo proudly showed off the gun he had just been given by Fidel Castro. The way he was waving it about was enough to get even my feet moving!

Finally, I must mention one of our own amateurs, Bradley Saunders, who has just come back from China where he won the President's Cup. It is part of the preparations for the Olympics and we only sent five fighters out - the rest went to Poland for the European Championships - but Bradley beat the (other) world bronze medallist and the reigning Olympic champion.

He's a pal of mine and I am chuffed to bits for him. He might be a million miles away from Floyd Mayweather just yet, but I reckon he might just end up being number one in Beijing.

Do you agree with Glenn? Is this the end of Floyd? How good was he? And who will take over as the pound-for-pound king? Let us know your view by using the feedback form below...

Anyone can look good against mediocre or average opponents...thats what happened to naseem and hatton. The title of the greatest is reserved for the man who in his prime, took on and beat all the best in their prime, ducking nobody. MAYWEATHER has not satisfied this criteria.

A top 20 great of all time... No more due to lack of great fights For me, he was allowed to duck his head too many times in fights. Something that would not have been allowed to do years ago. If he didnt want to fight Cotto, he should retire.

Mayweather will alway's be remembered as one of the modern great's, as will De La Hoya, Mosely, Winky, Hopkins, etc... Everybody is banging on about Cotto, fair enough, barr Mayweather he's the best out there, but what has he achieved also? He could'nt knock out a "over the hill" Mosely, he was pushed to the limit by Malignaggi, and i think he'll be pushed to the limit against Margharito, This argument will go on forever as that many people dislike Mayweather, but you don't see people calling Joe Calzaghe for ducking Roy Jones when he was "superman"

Mad Max your comment is is almost right but for me he has never been pfp 2 be pfp you have to beat the best there is has floyd? no. Look at all the fighter he has skipped through the years cotto, mosley, tszyu, williams, margarito, cintron, clottey and you could even put forrest in that bracket. Look who he has fought gatti totally out of his prime, mitchell a c class fighter at best, sosa like mitchell a c class fighter, a out of prime de la hoya, baldomir not exacly the best fighter ever and of course hatton who is no way in hell a welterweight. Now look who he has fought and who he has not fought big difference isn't there. all i am trying to do is make you realise that floyd has took a lot a short cut to remain underfeated and for that he can not be considered one of the all time greats

As much as i dislike pbf you cant take away the fact hes the best fighter since well you could say ever couldnt you. Its sad hes retired but in away for the mayweather haters its a good thing. Lets say he returns to fight Cotto and wins comfortable (which he would) and then fights hatton at wembley and wins comfortable (which he would). nahhh. i couldnt live with that. Stay retired pbf. That way i can always say you didnt fancy Cotto and Hatton would beat you at LW in england. Thank you

Mayweather did exactly what he said "I'm going to retire the game I'm not going to let the game retire me"! He¿s a champion, he has done everything that all boxers dream about achieving..... He¿s won 6 world titles in 5 weight divisions, known as the best pound for pound fighter in the world, he¿s got money & an undefeated record. For me Mayweather retires on a high & no one can knock him for that.

Although much debate can be formulated regarding whether or not Mayweather Jr is the 'King' I think it is difficult to dispute the positive effect that he has had in the sport of Boxing in regards to bringing in the sports fans, as well as regular Boxing followers.

Why are they saying Floyd never fought anyone. There was no doubt in yhe De la Hoya fight, it was the same as Hatton, lots of pressure but not hitting the target. In both those fights Floyd was ridculously more accurate. Of course i wanted Hatton to win but Mayweathers come up through 5 weights and he had to beat the best to do it. He retires as the best. Let him go. He said his heart hasnt been in boxing for ages yet hes still won all his fights.

I agree that Floyd has sometimes been too good for his own good and because of that he's never really been dragged into the sort of fight that makes people remember you for your heart. The only person left who could do that, i believe, would be Miguel Cotto and i think Mayweather would beat him too. Bottom line is if Mayweather beats Cotto clearly then he can retire happily knowing he has definitely beaten all the best fighters of his era.

Guys, you can't take away that Floyd was a fantastic fighter. The simple fact and truth of boxing is that there will ALWAYS be another waiting in the wings, there will ALWAYS be unfinished business. When does a fighter call it a day? In boxing there is never 'A DAY' cos there are always people coming through. There is a never ending goal... someone else will be setting a new goal as soon as the fighter has won his last fight and claims will be 'oh he is dodging so and so.' Get real Floyd is a legend and is without A GREAT who has defeated everything thrown at him, he does not need to TO PROVE ANYTHING. Let him retire as the legend he is. (Beside no one currently could actually beat him anyway even he did fight on. )

While I respect your opinion Zubair, your argument is somewhat flawed. Dont forget that its easier today to win 6 world titles at five different weights than it was in the past as there are more titles now. Mayweather the greatest??? A great certainly...but the Greatest??? I think pound for pound I would have to go with Sugar Ray Robinson.

So if Floyd come's back and beat's Cotto, then everybody will say he's ducking an up and comer like Andre Berto, if he beat's Berto, he'll be ducking a new star like Victor Ortiz, it will never end... I personally think it's time for Floyd to retire, after seeing the treatment he has to go through in the 24/7 program, it's common sense, why would he continue doing the sport to please other people and end up like Ali... He's done the sensible thing, any boxing fan should appreciate what he's done for the sport, he has my best wishes for whatever conquest he does in the future

Mayweather is the pound for pound best fighing in the world..especally since Roy Jones Junior. He is retiring as the best, having winning titles at 5 different belts suggest he fought everyone. Mayweather has not avioded anyone, he has fought anybody who has been a threat. He has not avioded no one and that includes Cotto. I rate Coto, but people forget he has already called out Cotto, but his Camp says he was not ready. So you people need to Check your facts, before trying to say Mayweather is avoiding Cotto. The Fact is that Ricky Hatton, should have fought Cotto before he attempting to fight Mayweather. If you remember everyone was Stupidly Saying that Mayweather was avoiding Hatton, everyone was shouting that Mayweather needs to fight Hatton when he retired last time. No one Mentioned Cotto, it was all about Hatton. Hatton was running up his mouth to the public knowing that business was not sorted out with Mayweather Camp...Everyone was saying Hatton was going to beat Mayweather..Only true boxing fans know that was never going to be the case...MAYWEATHER BEAT HATTON LIKE HE WAS A SCHOOL BOY ATTEMPTING HIS FIRST FIGHT. Mayweather does not to meet Cotto to be known as a great..he had the gretness title long time ago. THere nothing in the Cotto fight, Hatton took his place, becuase Cotto was not ready. Why should Mayweather be waiting for Cotto to be ready lol...And plus Mayweather got to much things on his mind, to really concentrate on that fight..And lets say Mayweaher came out reitiremnt to fight Cotto, and If Cotto was to win, it will be tainted, Cotto had a chance to fight a man in his prime. It was like Lennox Beating Tyson, Lennox got no ratings becuase Tyson was out of his Prime....Not saying that Mayweather iis out of his prime, but there are too many things his doing at the moment, how much heart does he still have in boxing. if they was to fight Mayweather will beat him,but Cotto is still a good fighter

I'm unsure whether we've seen the last of Mayweather or not! I think Glenn's right, barring maybe Cotto there's probably little out there for him in terms of a genuine challenge. I guess we'll see! As for who would take over as P4P king, I see Paquiao taking over the slot by default as the current no. 2 but my contenders are Cotto or Pavlik. Both guys are in their prime, undefeated and improving all the time. I think if Calzaghe is to be in contention for that crown he needs to fight Pavlik, not Roy Jones, Tarver or anyone else past their best, but a real, genuine challenger. If he fought and beat Pavlik then Joe would be P4P no. 1. Any opinions on Hattons next move after Malignaggi? I think Pacqiao, then maybe Cotto if the weight could be negotiated and call it a day.

Mayweather is doing the best thing for him in retiring at this stage undefeated. Cotto is to me the biggest threat to Mayweather and who i think would actualy destroy Mayweather. The same fighters they have both fought cotto has finished in fashion and Mayweather has only scraped desisions, not to take anything away from Mayweather who is by far one of the greatest ever, but he has not much to gain in this fight and everything to loose. For me personaly and fight fans world wide this would be a dream match up, and i would just love to see Mayweather prove me wrong and take this fight, because if he did win he could then retire in complete satisfaction and be crowned the new undersputed greatest of all time! Calzaghe Pavlic, Pavlic by way of knock out.

Its was bit sad to hear Floyed retier whether he means it or not' we hope not. Would have love to see a remach with Haton at wembly' or him take on coto. But if he has hanged his gloves up for good he s probly made the right choice' he is a clever guy and we all know that.

pbf is up there with the greats of the game i'am not saying he would beat duran at lightweight or leonard or hearns and robinson at welterweight but hey sure could hold his own.he might not be the greatest but he was fabulous at what he did. ps richard would like a return at wembley stadium next may pps same result only quicker this time

one of the greatest fighters i have ever watched. different class. i watch him against hatton and he was very good. however what i will also say is against de la hoya i thought the decision could have gone either way. to see him fight cotto or manny would be a great fight to watch. love hatton but i think after his fight against floyd last time, albeit with a judge that looked decidedly bought and paid for, i dont think he can realistically beat mayweather. best of all time? too many factors to take into account to answer that one. but, prior to his 'retirement' certainly the best fighter on the planet.

Al Zane why does nobody remember when Mayweather called Cotto out after the Gatti fight and was told Cotto wasn't ready yet. Why should Floyd fight Cotto when he feels like it? He had his chance.

Ben Garnett says...

I have to disagree with Glenn here (for the 1st time ever!). Mayweather has never fought any top quality opposition (maybe Baldomir) in the Welterweight division. Floyd has ducked Cotto in many peoples opinion, whereas the Puerta Rican has fought everybody. I know people say there will always somebody to beat, but I truly believe Floyd has unfinished business. If Cotto beats Margarito then there will always be a small doubt in my mind. Cotto has beat Quintana, Mosley, Judah, Malignaggi, Corley, Torres and Pinto in style. He fights whoever the fans want (proved by the upcoming Margarito fight). I just wish Floyd would do the same, nobody wanted to see Mayweather-De La Hoya II, all real fans want Mayweather-Cotto. It's a real shame it won't happen.
