Williams-McDermott: scary

Quotes of the week
The last Friday Fight Night of the series ended up more of a Friday Fright night for poor old John McDermott.
The decision to give Danny Williams the win was unbelievable, absolutely shocking and in fact, quite scary.
If you'd have seen that fight in a car park, or the street, McDermott would've walked away the winner. Quite simply that fifth round when he bashed Danny up was enough to take the British belt.
Williams was very, very lucky. Very lucky indeed. You could argue about the points deductions late on in the fight and he did berate Dave Parris, but the referee did him a massive favour in that fifth round.
Nine out of 10 referees would've stepped in and stopped it because he was taking a real battering, but Parris allowed him to carry on and it proved the right decision - for Danny at least.
But not for McDermott. In fairness, I and most other people thought he would get bombed out inside a few rounds, but he put in a great performance. He raised the bar above anything else he had produced in his career and yet he walked away without that British belt.
I had a word with him afterwards and told him I thought he'd won it and won it well. It seemed to lift him a bit and I am glad because what we saw shows that had he got that win, there would have been something to work on, a new force in our heavyweight division.
I've always thought Danny was the most talented we have produced for a long time - although it seems we are never going to see it come to fruition - and if John can do that to him, with a little bit more work and harder sparring, he could go on to really make an impression.
Hopefully he will get to fight for the vacant title, which is the least he deserves. As for Danny, it's difficult to know where he goes from here. It was not the platform to launch a second world-title bid from and now he has been found out at world, European and British level.
If it was any other fighter, I would say it was time to call it a day, but we've seen Danny this bad before and we've seen him bounce back before. But even then, McDermott hurt him and hurt him badly and that was something that Mike Tyson didn't do and, although he gave him a boxing lesson, Vitali Klitschko didn't do either.
The decision may have been a shocker but the fight was another cracking, controversial British title affair. I have said before my only regret in boxing was that I didn't win a Lonsdale belt and this, plus the others that have gone before, show just what it means to boxers.
Not many boxers can talk of, or even dream of a world title, but the British belt is something that is within their aspirations, within their grasp.
Which brings us nicely onto the news of the second Prizefighter which, I am delighted to say, will be in Newcastle.
The first one was a good idea and it certainly made for a great night's boxing and I am sure the second one will do the same. Last time we had a few unbeaten records on the line so there was plenty to lose; although funnily enough both north east fighters, David Dolan and Dave Ferguson both saw their 0's go.
Prizefighter might be a gimmick, but it is a gimmick that works. If they were to turn boxing as a whole into three, three-minute rounds, I would kick up a fuss, but this is what it is and the fighters and the fight trade have taken to it.
It gives the guys further down the ladder a chance of glory. No-one had really heard of Martin Rogan before he won but it has given him a moment in the spotlight - and a fight with Audley Harrison - he might not have got. It is a good stepping stone and the fighters now know the doors it can open.
I am sure the people of the north east will love it as well. It's a cliche you hear all the time, but they are sports mad up here and I know they will take to Prizefighter. Football will always rule the roost but if this can ignite further interest in boxing I am all for it. I want to see it back here full-time.
Before I go this week, I can't help but cast one eye ahead to what could be the fight of the year this weekend when Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito go at it.
They are two cracking fighters, two tough, tough men and this is a real test for Cotto. I do think he will have to come through some tough times on Saturday night, but I still fancy him to have too much.
He is really coming to the forefront as one of the best in the world but Margarito does have the height and reach advantage and whatever happens, will keep coming forward, keep throwing shots. It is going to be fascinating but like I say, I just fancy Cotto to weather the storm and come up with a late stoppage.
Rendall Munroe retained his European super bantamweight title with a tough points verdict over battling Armenian Arsen Martirosyan in Nottingham.
Amir Khan and Breidis Prescott both weighed in at 9stone 8½lbs ahead of their lightweight showdown on Saturday night.
Frank Warren is aiming to line up a clash between Alex Arthur and Marco Antonio Barrera if the Scot comes through Saturday's fight.
Jim Watt wants to see Amir Khan's chin stand up to the test when he takes on KO artist Breidis Prescott.
Amir Khan admits he will face a risky fight when he takes on unbeaten Colombian Breidis Prescott on Saturday night.

Although McDermott probably edged it, I can't see what all the fuss is about. McDermott spent most of the night on the back foot and only came out of his shell a handfull of times. Danny pressed the fight for the most part, and although he looked off balance and a bit wild, he still did enough to hold on to the belt. The ref was a disgrace, thought he was gonna tie Dannys hands behind his back at one point. Danny is great to watch as he's unpredictable,, still can't forgive him for beating up Tyson though. All the best to him in future, he probably deserves another world title shot. Would love to see him give David Haye his first fight at Heavyweight. A motivated Danny Williams would be agreat test for him in my humble opinion. Keep the fights coming Sky, beats watching Amir Khan beating up has beens on ITV.

I just want to respond to a few of the comments on here suggesting that Glen said the 5th was enough to win the fight?? Thats not at all what Glen was suggesting he was mearly stating the fact that you have to, as a challenger go and win the title from the champion and that 5th was enough to say that if John would have got the decision which i strongly believe he should have then he would have really taken the title from the champion.... alot of respect for Glen one of the best pundets on here...

I watched the fight on sky sports and when the result was called i thought surely its a joke. McDermott without a doubt won the fight ok he wasn't busy every round and let Williams take the initiative but after that 5th round it was a clear 10-8 round. Given that and Williams 3 points deduction in the later rounds its hard to see how he could have won the fight! A massive injustice for big John who is a poor excuse for a heavyweight but still should be the British heavyweight champion!

I know I'm gonna be in the minority but I honestly thought that Danny Williams deserved his points decision last Friday night. Danny outboxed John for the first four rounds and after a shocking fifth round he just about shaded the middle and later rounds. Although Dave Parris did Danny a massive favour in the fifth round, the points deductions at the end of the fight were ridiculous and if they'd have not happened then the fight wouldn't have even been close. Surely John McDermott doesn't want to be Champion 'cos the referee underservably took 3 points away from his opponent? One round doesn't win you a fight (take note Glen!) Hey, I can't wait for the rematch though!

Although i have sympathy for John as i feel he won the fight, i cant help but be angry at him for coming into the biggest fight of his career so out of shape, who knows what he could have done to Williams if he was in better shape. I'm sorry John, but it is somewhat of a disgrace.

I was at the fight and I though have nothing but respect for Glen's read of a fight - he's been there and got the t-shirt - to suggest winning the 5th round so comprehensively is sufficient to win the bout is ridiculous. John performed well beyond expectation and I think in that fact many have been hypnotised into believing he deserved the nod. In truth he didn't. He wasn't busy enough for too much of too many rounds. After the mid-way point he offered even less, I couldn't help thinking the fifth took as much from John's reserves as Danny's. Parris gave Danny an opportunity few others would have extended, but that's because of Danny's history and the status of the fight. For all his critics and snipers he has the heart of a lion once in the ring. Buckets and buckets of resolve, he's earned the respect Parris afforded him. He wasn't given the stay of execution, he's worked hard for the repute Parris used to justify not intervening. However, those late points deductions bordered on the ludicrous too, particularly given the amount of holding John did with out so much as a warning. Either way, an absorbing contest and a defined ceiling on the horizons of both. John showed he could win the British title, Danny showed he's very unlikely to win anything beyond it. Which in the latters case will be a shame when one considers the relative merits of John Ruiz, Lamon Brewster and Oleg Maskaev who can all, during Danny's time as a leading heavyweight, lay claim to being a world-champion. I think the best of Williams would have been a match for them all. Respect to both fighters though.
