Mayweather: no conditioner
Is it worth making such a change at this stage? I don't think so. Billy Graham couldn't tighten Ricky Hatton up in 11 years, so how is Floyd Sr going to in five weeks?

Quotes of the week
Guess who's coming to Britain on Friday?
In case you didn't know Floyd Mayweather Sr is arriving to start working with Ricky Hatton. It will no doubt be entertaining and no-one will go short of a quote, but is it a good move? I'm not so sure.
Time and time again we see fighters looking for some sort of magic wand to wave, usually when they've lost. Time and time again they go for the big-name trainers, the ones with the reputation, thinking they are going to change them.
Well I'll tell Floyd Snr one thing for nothing: Ricky Hatton is Ricky Hatton. You ain't going to change anything mate!
I know Ricky has spoken of working on his defence more and yes his new trainer is known for that, but I am not entirely sure that is going to do much. He might get Ricky to concentrate a little more on the defensive side and the tactics might vary, but it will be nothing more than a tweak.
But it's not the tweaking that worries me, because it might only be 10 per cent. What worries me is the other 90 per cent, because that other 90 per cent of Ricky Hatton is very, very good. But with these changes, is it still going to be that good?
And is it worth making such a change at this stage? I don't think so. Billy Graham couldn't tighten him up in 11 years, so how is Floyd Sr going to in five weeks?
Ricky needs a conditioner not a technical trainer. Maybe that's where Lee Beard comes in, but to tell the truth, I don't know enough about him to make a judgement.
In my opinion Ricky needs come fight time is to go back to his corner and find a mate there. I think that is what his mind reacts to best.
I paid particular attention to Mayweather's corner work with Steve Forbes when he fought Andre Berto at the weekend and from what I could tell all he was telling him to do was "kick his ass".
If I'd have been Forbes, I'd have been asking "I know that. But how exactly? Can you put that in layman's terms?" I wasn't that impressed.
You have to respect Mayweather for what he's done - although it was brother Roger who did all the work with Floyd Jr recently - but if a fighter wants to know how good they are, what they can do and how deep they can go, there is only one place they need to go looking - the mirror.
As I've said before, I just think it might be too much change at this stage for Ricky.
I hope I am wrong because I'll say this now: if he gets beat by Paulie Malginaggi - and it is not an easy fight by any means - that will be it, all over. Get beaten by Floyd Mayweather and it's no problem. Everyone expected him to and after all, he was in with the best in the business.
I hope I am worrying too much for Ricky because the talk this week has increased about fighting Oscar de la Hoya at Wembley - unless Oscar can find himself a bantamweight to take on after Manny Pacquiao!
In all seriousness, watching Andre Berto against Steve Forbes (pictured) told me one thing: that the Golden Boy is far from finished. He is still shining brightly, believe me.
I thought he looked sharp in beating Forbes, I really did. But to see Berto, an emerging star, a real banger, taken the distance and not really put Two Pounds under pressure puts De La Hoya's performance in perspective.
Forbes has never been stopped but it is going to happen sooner or later and I just thought Berto might be the first to do it. Oscar didn't do it, but he looked a class above Berto.
Finally at the other end of the scale, well done to young Paul Appbleby, who was named Best Young British Boxer of the Year this week. Paul is a lad who has trained with us at Northumbria ABC and is in fact coming down in a couple of weeks, and he is a real prospect.
He's a cracking little fighter. He still looks like he should be in school, but he's a tough little Scot, he always comes to fight and doesn't really do a lot wrong. He will make mistakes as he's so young, but we saw him tough it out against John Simpson to win the British title, so he can think on his feet as well.
Paul has a cheeky little grin and is a very likeable lad. In many ways, he reminds me of a young Ricky Hatton...
David Haye could be made to wait for a shot at the world heavyweight title with the Klitschko brothers lining up different opponents.
Floyd Mayweather Snr insists that Ricky Hatton has what it takes to beat Manny Pacquiao.
Manchester lightweight John Murray will defend his British title against Lee McAllister at the Robin Park Centre in Wigan on January 17.
Olympic gold medallist James DeGale and Great Britain head coach Terry Edwards are revelling in their inclusion on the New Year Honours List.
Frank Warren is excited by the number of potential champions coming through the ranks.

All i think having Mayweather Snr in his corner will do is give him a fresh ability to slip a few punches here and there when Malignaggi goes on the attack. That is all... nothing major. I really think the difference will be so subtle that no average sports fans will notice. But, with that said, a couple of inches here and there may be all you need in a world title bout... It may be the difference between dodging a bomb, and evading a bullet to spot 1 gaping hole in his opponent...

I can see why people including glen are concerned about hatton not being as potent in attack and concentrating more on defensive skills but i honestly think ricky is the type of fighter that has natural ability to go forward and hasnt really been thought that in boxing, hes a brawler and loves to go forward so i dont think it will be a problem at all .I did notice ricky in recent times looked a bit laboured and holding on a bit in later rounds ,i hope floyd can try stamp that out a bit ,either way it makes for a good fight that i cannot see ricky loosing but all the same i can see it going the distance .

many people say ricky hatton is just a slugger type fighter, but in my books hes far from that because if you seen the mayweather fight you would have also seen ricky chasing fllyod for a long period of time, and he also showed that he could jab and be quick around the ring and of course billy graham should get credit for what he has done with ricky, but know that he has the professional presence of mayweather snr we will all see ricky lyk he was before but only better. We will see the slugger side of ricky and also the quick movement using the jab side of ricky.

People think Mayweather is a master trainer but in all fairness he has worked with world class fighters all his days.I hope it works out for Ricky but the real person behind Floyd Mayweather Jrs great defensive skills is Floyd Jr.Hes to fast to strong and to smart and also been blessed with the most magnificent boxing skills on the planet.Floyd also trained Oscar De La Hoya who at the peak of his career was also de facto number 1 p4p.

Dear all, We have seen the decline of Ricky Hatton's boxing style in every decade eg. Frazier was never the same after 1973, Tyson after Bruno on (1989) . A clever technician will beat a brawler who has cleary had his day. The one thing that Billy Graham gave Ricky Hatton was 100% fitness which may be lacking with Floyd Snr who is obviously here for the money. Many thanks Love Jim

I think it is quite ridiculous that someone with such boxing expertise would dismiss Floyd Mayweather Snr as Ricky Hatton's coach. He is by far a better trainer than Billy Graham and the proof is, what other big boxer has Graham trained other than Ricky Hatton? Ricky Hatton has pretty much boxed the last few fights on his own, Floyd Snr has bought the best out of Oscar De La Hoya and has trained other top boxers such as Eric Morales and Joan Guzman. Watch some of De La Hoya's old fights and you will see how crucial Floyd Snr is to his success, at the end of rounds he always gave great analysis and told De La Hoya what was needed. Bottom line is if a guy who trained the world P4P boxer in his amateur days (Floyd Mayweather Jnr), also trained the only 6 weight world champion (De La Hoya) amongst many others, it cannot be a bad thing that he is training Ricky Hatton. I'm sure Hatton will learn a thing or two about defence and because Floyd Snr is such a colourful and demanding character, I'm sure we'll see a better Ricky Hatton. He looks like he has lost a bit of passion, skill and desire recently, maybe Floyd Snr is the right person to bring the fire out again.

I believe that MAYWEATHER Snr is good for Hatton simply because he has experience and has been in business a very long time. He can help Ricky in many ways and not just defensivly. Mayweather has a good record so i think he deserves respect or is it because he is not a British trainer. Ricky needs the best to be at his best and i think Mayweather is one of the best. Thank you.

I believe that Ricky will have a better defense and that will help him tremendously in his fight - he will still pressure but hopefully it is more controlled and timed - he can only gain more from Mayweather Senior

i have to agree that there is no way a seasoned preffesional like hatton can change all that much, at this stage in his career. mayweather snr can probably make him work better at defence in training, but that'll all go out of the window the minute the bell rings, hatton knows what he does, and does it well. i think he will beat mallignagi, and after that i dont see the point in fighting dela hoya, fighting paqiaou would be better, whether paqiaou loses to dela hoya or not. hatton has nothing left to prove at super lightwieght, and he faught the best at welter and the best in the world and lost. i dont see what he needs to do , he's done everything. natural size, would be the difference between him and dela hoya, and hatton would probably get knocked out. a superfight with paqaiou at wembley would be a great way to end a great boxing career.

I think Hatton will seriously benifit from Mayweathers coaching. You could see in his last few fights (even against Floyd jr) that he wasn't listening to Billy Graham between rounds. He just seemed to have lost confidence in Graham and seemed more content to just go out and do his own thing. With Mayweather senior in his coner maybe he'll take some advice onboard and be a better fighter for it

We have seen the best of ricky hatton against Tszyu, and that was definatly him at his best, but to be honest, he hasnt fought the same since. He clinchs too much, just going for that left hook every time. but when your fighting the elite, it doesnt work so good. He used to be moving his head and getting that power punch in and getting out, but he just dont do that anymore. i hope floyd snr works wonders and gets hatton back to what he was because at his best, hes definaty the most exciting fighter to watch!

i think this could be a very good move for hatton. admittedly i dont know tons about boxing, but i did see the mayweather fight and hatton looked a really unskilled fighter. he was beaten very easily by mayweather after his initial, emotional, crowd-driven surge of energy. i know he has done very well in the uk and europe, but the US is another class, and this change might help him get to that level.

Completely disagree. Tiger Woods changed coaches at the height of his success. He is always striving to get better. He felt he had nothing more to learn from Butch Harmon so sought to absorb more knowledge from a new coach. He didn't forget what he had already learned, just added more to his arsenal. The same will happen to Hatton. Working with Graham for so long has made him the boxer he is, but he obviously felt he needed a change to improve further which is incredibly hard when you're already world class. I think Ricky will win in style in November and become even better with the help of Floyd Snr.

I've always been a fan of Ricky Hattons and to be honest I am more concerned that Kerry Kayes is no longer in his camp. It was his nutritionist Kayes who got Hatton down to his weight limit every time without fail. I was surprised Hatton sacked Billy Graham. Losing to Floyd mayweather jr is no disgrace and Billy has always been brilliant for him. Hattons commitment will mean he'll train hard but I'm not sure how anything can be changed too much without taking away his greatest asset, which is his pressure fighting. Its no secret that Floyd jr hates his dad and I think Hatton has picked Mayweather sr just to try and rile his son into a rematch. As to whether Mayweather can do much for Ricky I'm not sure. We'll just have to wait and see.
