Owens: Laughing all the way to the bank
Money no object. Super Bowl here we come. Those are the noises coming out of Dallas this week as Jerry Jones digs ever deeper into his treasure chest to ensure the Cowboys are fully equipped for the new season - and then some.
It is time to Win Now, never mind tomorrow. And Terrell Owens is one of the main beneficiaries of the big Dallas cash windfall which is now at $97.8million, and counting.
Owens has just banked a new deal worth roughly $34million over the next four years; not huge amounts in today's NFL, but, at $8.5m a year, quite a chunk of change for a wide receiver who is already 34.
That's on top of the new contracts which Jones has also handed out in the last few months to running back Marion Barber (7 years, $45m) and linebacker Zach Thomas (4 years, $18.8m).
And the fact Texas Stadium is now home to Adam 'Pacman' Jones and his own little media circus, fresh from his one-year suspension and latest scrape with the law in Las Vegas.
This latter includes a situation where one person is still in hospital after being gunned down outside a nightclub where Jones and his entourage had already caused a ruckus, amid allegations he showered strippers in the nightclub with thousands of dollars (which he then demanded back - cue mass pandemonium).
So, nothing controversial there, then.
The fact the Cowboys were prepared to lock up Owens with that shiny new contract suggests they didn't feel there was much on offer in this year's Draft, and even less to be found on the free agent market.
And, with Terry Glenn nothing more than an asterisk on the sidelines (still struggling with the knee injury and two operations which kept him out for all but two games last season), refusing to accept a $½million pay-off, there is a lot riding in the gloved hands of 'T.O.'
For those who detect a hint of desperation in the Dallas air, you may not be far wrong. Last term, when push came to shove, it was the Cowboys' receivers who were most culpable for their end-of-season meltdown and early play-off exit to arch-rivals New York Giants.
So, when owner Jones looked around to see how he could best buy his way over that play-off hurdle, he found the landscape remarkably barren. Except for a 34-year-old wide receiver with a wild history in the final year of his Dallas contract.
To put it more simply, to avoid another 'where will he go next' drama all season, Jones decided his best option was to throw as much money in Owens' direction as possible to convince him to stay beyond next season - and prevent the campaign from deteriorating into yet another episode of the T.O. Show
With the way Jones, Owens and his agent Drew Rosenhaus staged a popcorn-induced mutual appreciation session, you'd think that all was sweetness and light in Cowboy country. Well, from the wide receiver's perspective, it certainly is.
Rosenhaus got him the kind of contract - with $13million guaranteed, no matter what he does - that most wideouts can only dream about.
But it could quickly become a nightmare for the team if Owens doesn't have the kind of season which propelled the Eagles to the Super Bowl during his only full year with them.
With doubts remaining over Tony Romo's ability to be the leader the offence needs, the onus will be firmly on 'the player' (as Bill Parcells used to refer to him) to find the way to the end zone early and often.
Which brings us to Pacman, and another Jones-inspired move which has all the stability of the San Andreas Fault.
There is little doubt the ex-Tennessee cornerback is one of the best shut-down defensive backs in the league when he has his mind on the game. But that hasn't been terribly often in his 3-year NFL career (one of them suspended) which includes a litany of off-field troubles (many of the nightclub variety).
And, with him currently "on probation" (able to practice with his new team-mates but not yet confirmed to play when the pre-season gets under way), it will take only one slight misdemeanour of the non-football kind to land him back in commissioner Roger Goodell's bad books. Which, for anyone of a literary persuasion, is not a healthy place to be.
Talk about walking a self-imposed tightrope. Jerry Jones has employed a few trapeze acts in his time (Deion 'Prime Time' Sanders being one of the most notable), but to have two such highly flammable characters in the club going into a pivotal season when it is pretty much win-at-all-costs does not bode hugely well for Dallas fans.
Unless the huge weight of expectation on the shoulders of T.O. and Pacman counter-balance each other like some kind of massive see-saw; the huge ego on offence offset by the heavy burden of responsibility on defence.
It all points towards there being quite a soap opera in Dallas this year. Perhaps that's an idea for a TV series.........
The New York Giants and Tennessee Titans both maintained their perfect starts to the season in week five.
The Cincinnati Bengals returned troubled wide receiver Chris Henry to their roster after sitting out four games through suspension.
The Buffalo Bills have handed wide receiver Lee Evans a contract extension that will keep him with the team until 2012.
It's week five of the NFL season and for the New York Giants and Buffalo Bills Sunday night is all about trying to stay perfect.
Aaron Rodgers is hopeful of overcoming a shoulder injury to play in Green Bay's week five fixture against Atlanta.

Dallas have the weapons to do a lot of damage provided they can keep their heads out of the sky. They need to have a one game at a time mentalitiy. Romo has done an outstanding job given that this was his first full season as the starting QB. How many years did it take before Peyton Manning won his first playoff game? In any event Dallas will succeed or fail based on the coaching and that will make the HBO pre season docu-drama Hard Knocks all the more interesting. Does anyone know if Hard Knocks will be shown on Sky?

There is no doubting the talent of the Dallas Cowboys. They have to be early favourites for the NFC, even if they have one of the most competitive divisions in the NFL. But sometimes you can't help but feel that all this glitz and glamour, all the high profile and risky signings, the huge weight of expectation, is gonna come together and leave Cowboys fans ultimately disappointed. No play-off win in 12 years? Quite frankly it's unacceptable for a team with this ability. As for TO, I think he is the perfect example of what the Dallas Cowboys are. Very talented, but a distinct lack of humility, and a fragile temperament to say the least. If Dallas still feel they need more depth at wide-out, don't be surprised if they make an audacious attempt to steal Chad Johnson away from the Bengals. Other players with a checkered career who could wind up as Cowboys are Cedric Benson (as backup to Felix Jone)and even Michael Vick (as the Romo whispers are never far away). THE DALLAS COWBOY SHOW CONTINUES - COMING TO A STADIUM NEAR YOU!

Does this writer, know what he is talking about?? Tony Romo struggles to lead the offence ? how about best quaterback in the NFC period, The number one offence in the NFC. NO struggle there then!!! T.O a risk?? i dont think so single season touchdown record last season, a healthy TO in the playoffs last year equals cowboys superbowl champions.

All the peices in place...talented players at every position...expectations high......media just waiting for a sniff to blow the whole Cowboy jamboree to pieces....who'd be Wade Phillips right now?? Well, me for one. He has at his disposal the pound for pound best set of players in the NFL and as long as he can keep the team playing as a team, they have every chance of going to the party and eating all the cake!!!!

Firstly, is 'Hard Knocks' going to be shown on Sky, because it would be great to get an insight into the day to day goings on of an NFL team? With regards to the regards to the Cowboys this year, I think they will struggle. I think the Eagles (especially) and the Redskins will improve enough to make a very competitive NFC East even more competitve and hopefully the Giants can carry their post season form into this year. I still have my doubts over Romo but its it more in the running and receiving game that I see issues with. Without Glenn (presumably) I don't feel Patrick Crayton offers enough of a threat to stop teams doubling up on TO (see Carolina and Steve Smith last year) and Marion Barber has never had a 1000 yards rushing and I see him as a support back rather than the featured back. Felix Jones may add enough to stop this being a major flaw however but its hard to predict and place that much burden on a rookie. As a Seahawks fan my hope (and expectation) is that the NFC East teams beat up on each other so much that the NFC #1 seed race is blown wide up and hopefully we can pounce from there (even though we have to play all 4 East Teams and the Pats). So I can't see the Cowboys reaching the promised land and where do they go from there? NB - Watch out for the vikings and Panthers this year.

Despite the fact that Jerry Jones and his seemingly unlimited confidence in players who are, lets say, controversial; it is absolutely undeniable that the cowboys are a better team with the sticky hands of TO. No one (except perhaps Randy Moss) has demonstrated the type of concistency as both a deep threat and a go-to guy on third and long as Terrel has. This, in my eyes at least is an essential part of the Dallas offense as it gives the young and unproven (in the big game) Tony Romo his hope of making the third and long with the game on the line. There is no doubt that without TO's TD's last year, Dallas would not have been 14-2 last season and one can only speculate as to what their divisional standing in the NFC EAST would have been without their franchise player.
