John Carew celebrates West Brom v Aston Villa

It is always so difficult to know how good you really are when you are a Villa fan.

Disappointing results away at Newcastle and at home to Middlesbrough, followed by excellent results against Arsenal and Manchester United and then a very frustrating draw at home to Fulham. If you can sort that lot out into any logical run of form I will buy you a beer!

However, every Villa fan I know is thoroughly enjoying the season so far. The only time we have been really hammered was away at Chelsea and we won't be the only team to say that this season.

Other than that, we have put up a very good fight against everyone.

Focus

Our early exit from the League Cup against QPR has helped us to focus on the UEFA Cup - and it's so great to be back in Europe!

We have also managed to avoid a third-round tie with Manchester United in the FA Cup this season as well - it will be a real change to go to somewhere like Gillingham/Stockport and hopefully see the fourth-round draw for the first season in a long time.

Realistically, I think we can aim for fifth in the Premier League, a decent FA Cup run and the last eight of the UEFA Cup. If we can achieve that I am sure everyone will be very happy.

If we manage to buy a quality striker (which we desperately need) in the January transfer window, we may be able to nick fourth spot off Arsenal and get to the last four of the UEFA Cup, who knows?

Overall, I am extremely pleased with the way things are going and with a big-name striker on-board we should be able to break the top four. 'Optimistic!' I hear you cry, but I am a football fan and that is my job!

Everton

Over the last few years this has been a very good away fixture for us. Everton are coming off the back of a good away win at Spurs but they, like us, are struggling for some consistency in their results.

This is a really tough game but we need a result if we are to stay ahead of the pack and keep knocking on Arsenal's door.

It will be hard without John Carew up front but we just have to get on with the job and with Agbonlahor and Young, our pace up front should just shade it.

My prediction is 1-2 to the Villa.
