Carl Frampton has paid tribute to former opponent Alejandro Gonzalez Jr after reports of the boxer’s sudden death in Mexico.

Early reports indicate that the 23-year-old was found dead along with two others near to his home in the Mexican city of Guadalajara on Friday morning.

Frampton took to Twitter to mourn the loss of Gonzalez Jr, who was the Jackal's first opponent on American soil when the pair met in El Paso, Texas, in July last year.

He wrote: "Just hearing the tragic news about Alejandro Gonzalez jr. One of the nicest guys I've shared a ring with. RIP Champ."

Frampton's wife Christine also paid tribute to the Mexican fighter, who went by the nickname Cobrita.

"Absolutely heartbreaking news about the passing of Alejandro Gonzalez jr. Spoke at length with him in El Paso about our families. So sad," she posted.
