John O'Donnell is targeting the British welterweight title

Former commonwealth welterweight champion John O'Donnell has set his sights on securing a British title fight against Bradley Skeete.

The 31-year-old Irishman (32-2 KO11) spent nearly two years out of the ring between 2013 and 2015, but has since claimed four successive victories, two of those coming at Southern Area and English title level.

Despite being happy with his current run of performances, O'Donnell is keen to make the step up and even issued a challenge to European welterweight champion Sam Eggington.

"I took a bit of time out, I've had a lot of ups and downs, but I am back now," he told Sky Sports News HQ. "Hopefully it will not be too long before I get my shot at the British title.

"I've done everything that's been asked of me. My last two fights, I've had to go back down to Southern Area, English title level.

"I've done that, I've won and now I am knocking on the door for a British title fight.

"But in the meantime, if Sam Eggington wants to have a fight in September, he's looking for an opponent, I am here and ready to go."
