Ricky Burns claimed the interim WBO lightweight title after securing a unanimous points decision over Michael Katsidis at Wembley Arena.
The 28-year-old Scot expertly dealt with a trademark display of aggression from his opponent, landing the slicker and sharper shots throughout the fight.
He was given the fight 117-112, 117-111 and 117-111 on the three judges' scorecards.
Katsidis, who has now lost three of his last four bouts, showed a lot of heart by constantly fighting on the front foot but had no answer to the technical ability of his opponent.
After such a successful debut at lightweight he will now hope to add an outright world crown to the WBO title he won at super-featherweight.
Burns made a bright start and edged the first round with some crisp shots, with the Scot continuing to control the ring against his onrushing opponent in the second.
Katsidis could not find a way through in round three either, but the Australian did start to have more success in the fourth stanza, although he was falling quite a way behind on the scorecards.
In the fifth, Katsidis clearly won a round for the first time as he came forward and pinned Burns on the ropes, with his opponent unable to evade the pressure as he had done in the opening stages.
Burns stayed sharp despite the aggressiveness, though, and the sixth round was closer before Katsidis stepped up a gear again with some powerful combinations in the seventh.
Katsidis continued to cut the gap on the scorecards thanks to his relentless workrate but Burns hit back with a good ninth round.
But any hopes of a complete blowout points win were scuppered by his opponent's never-say-die attitude as Katsidis still came forward as the fight entered the final stages.
Katsidis did not give up until the bell rang in the last round, but the slicker boxing of Burns proved decisive in the end.
