Vazquez was making the fifth defence of the belt he won in 2010 and the Mexican controlled the fight with his superior skills to earn the verdict with wide scores of 117-111, 119-109, 118-110.
Gesta, who slipped to his first professional defeat, struggled to pin down the champion in the opening rounds and Vazquez started to dictate the fight with his accurate jab.
The Filipino fighter became increasingly desperate as the bout slipped away, but his crude attempts to land combinations were easily evaded by the wily Vazquez.
Gesta needed a late knockout to preserve his perfect record and it never looked likely as Vazquez skipped out of trouble and replied with right hands.
Vazquez's victory keeps him in contention for unification fights in a division that includes Scottish world champion Ricky Burns and American star Adrien Broner.
