Matchroom promotions and counterparts Sauerland are in protracted talks for Froch and WBA champion Kessler to have a unification fight, thought to be heading for the UK in March.
The IBF seem certain to waive Froch's mandatory defence against Stevenson in favour of a lucrative unification clash, but the Canadian wants to know if he will fight the winner.
"I need confirmation," he told boxingscene.com.
The 36-year-old worked his way into the number one spot with the IBF with three wins in Montreal last year, however Froch is keen to step up after dispatching the similarly unheralded Yusaf Mack in November.
Froch won the title in thrilling fashion from Lucian Bute last May and the Canadian left-hander could still trigger a re-match clause later this year.
Kessler inflicted a first career defeat on Froch over two years ago and a second fight between the pair would be one of the biggest match-ups worldwide in 2013.
