The 28-year-old Londoner was given a good test by his gutsy Dutch opponent but floored him twice in the penultimate round as he successful defended his WBC silver super-middleweight belt.

DeGale was bleeding from a cut above his left eye from the second round onwards but looked the superior fighter nonetheless, troubling his opponent with his combination punches.

The 2008 Olympic gold medal-winner found himself on the ropes in round six but quickly recovered and had the previously undefeated Khatchikian in trouble in the eighth and ninth.

And Khatchikian, who was born in Armenia, slumped to the canvas in the 11th when a he took a fierce body shot from DeGale.

Khatchikian was soon on his feet but was then felled by a similar blow and, although he again got up quickly, the referee had seen enough.

DeGale told Channel Five: "I knew I was wearing him down.

"I knew the first couple of rounds would be difficult. He wanted to fight, but I broke him down. The better the opponent, the better I box.

"I could see at the press conference that he really wanted it. I've done 11 rounds and ended up stopping him, I'm pleased.

"It's about moving on now and just getting that world title. That's what it's all about."
