Alvarez is rebuilding after his defeat to Floyd Mayweather last year, dominating Alfredo Angulo on his return to action in March.
The popular Mexican has some huge potential fights on the horizon at 154lbs and up at middleweight, but has sought out tricky Cuban exile Lara as his next foe.
Lara, who also owns a late stoppage victory over Angulo, was - like Alvarez - taken the distance by Austin Trout with the WBA's 'regular' light-middleweight title on the line on both occasions.
However, Alvarez - widely known as 'Canelo' - recognizes Mayweather as the legitimate WBA title holder and has reportedly refused to pay a sanctioning fee for fighting Lara.
The Cuban, now 31, was highly rated throughout his career and largely avoided by the big names as a result, so Alvarez - regarded by some as having a 'padded' 43-1 record - should be praised for taking what appears a difficult option.
Lara had been due to defend the belt against Ishe Smith on May 2, but that fight has been called off.
