The former super-middleweight champion has not fought since losing a rematch to Carl Froch last May.
Boxingnewsonline report that the 35-year-old will call time on his glittering career which has been hampered in recent years due to injuries.
However, Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet claims the 'Viking Warrior' will instead continue his career with a rematch with Andre Ward already lined-up.
Undefeated Ward claimed a technical decision over Kessler in 2009 when their WBA clash was stopped in the 11th round due to cuts.
The American boxer has not fought since November due to a contractual wrangle with his promoter.
A third fight with Froch in the autumn has also been suggested providing the Briton beats domestic rival George Groves on May 31st.
Watch Froch-Groves II on Sky Sports Box Office on May 31.
