Sunderland’s Little Dribblers programme has been challenging and developing young children who show signs of becoming talented footballers.
The Premier League club has been holding invite-only training sessions for three-to-five-year-olds at its Academy of Light – and a pathway is in place for the youngsters to progress into the club’s academy.
The scheme is the latest initiative from the Foundation of Light, which aims to engage young people in the North East in learning and sports activity that can consequently improve skills, motivation, attainment and independence.
The Foundation aims to inspire participants through motivational and engaging experiences to enhance lives and ensure that the club’s communities benefit from improved health, improved skills and improved education.
In 2013 alone, the foundation worked with 42,000 people across Sunderland, South Tyneside and Durham in more than 298,513 visits - that's more than 5,700 visits each week!
