After lunch, Rahane and Zaheer will come out and bat again, South Africa will be looking to keep this lead to a minimum and win this test today, India will want the exact opposite. Steyn will fire in after lunch, Rahane will face him, he pushes it to square leg but does not take the single. Good fielding by AB down the leg side, the keeper does well to stop this one. Rahane hits it back over Steyn's head for four, good shot after lunch, takes him to his highest test score. His previous highest was 51 not out from the first innings of this test. Last over before lunch, Peterson bowls to Rahane, who nudges the first ball to midwicket for no run, he is on 49. Swept away to deep square leg, Rahane reaches his 50 with a single. Just a single from the over. India lead by 7 runs at lunch on day five.
Steyn to Rahane, who drives through the cover for a couple of runs, Faf makes half a stop. India lead by 1 run. South Africa will have to bat again, Rahane extends the lead with a boundary. Peterson starts around the wicket to Zaheer now, who blocks the first ball back to the bowler. Zaheer takes a single on the leg side, bringing Rahane on strike, Peterson changes his angle to Rahane, back to over the wicket. Rahane sweeps it to deep square leg for a single, Khan back on strike. Steyn to Rahane, lots of movement for Steyn but Rahane manages to defend it. Rahane hits a boundary, outside off and Rahane punches it through point for four, good shot from him against Steyn. Outside off and Rahane lets it go to the keeper. Just the boundary from the over, India trail by 3 runs.
India trail by 7 runs and they need a partnership, they have needed a big one today but have not got it. South Africa have bowled well and reaped the rewards. Peterson continues his outside leg stump line, not sure if that is the right plan to the tail-ender. Smith having a chat with Zaheer, Peterson going around the wicket now. Dhoni and Jadeja both playing unnecessary shots, Rahane stranded at the other end, he has batted well and deserves better company out in the middle. After drinks, Morkel continues, Dhoni blocks the first one and then lets the next one go. A bit of hesitation between the two, Amla does well to rush in from point to stop the single, both batsmen safe in the end. A maiden in the end.

Morkel replaces Philander, this will be another test for the Indians. Morkel bowling from the Umgeni end, starts off with a couple of dots. Three slips, short leg and a short square leg in place, India 45 runs behind. A short ball from Morkel and Rahane pulls it away through mid wicket for a couple, they decide against the third run. Rahane punches it through the covers for four, good shot from him, risk free and he controlled it well. Another punch through the cover region, Peterson chases it down, three runs in the end. Down leg, Dhoni lets it go and AB can't collect it, it goes down as four byes. Useful runs for India, they trail by 32 runs.
India trail by 49 runs, Smith will be looking to keep the lead as long as possible and get some reverse swing later on. India will be looking to cover the lead without losing a wicket. Dhoni not sure if he should come down the wicket or stay back against Peterson. Dhoni finally comes down the wicket and hits it through long on for a four, good counter attack. India trail by 45 runs.
Philander continues to Rahane, who blocks the first one confidently. a few more blocks from him, good concentration against a quality fast bowler. Good maiden from Philander, Rahane plays it equally well.
Peterson to Rahane, blocks a few and then drives it for a single to deep cover. Good lengths and speed from Peterson today, he has bowled faster. Dhoni cuts it late and to the third man boundary, not a bad ball, but a bit of width and Dhoni gets four.
Philander starts his 4th over of this spell, Smith brings in a third slip after the first ball. Rahane edges the first ball for a couple of runs to third man. Just a single to third man, Rahane pushes it away from the slips. Three from the over.
Peterson to Dhoni now, a couple of unsure blocks from Dhoni and then he takes a quick single to mid on, well run in the end. Rahane gets a single, edges it away from Kallis at slip.
Philander continues, after Amla works on the ball, looking for reverse swing. Rohit strikes it square of the wicket for a couple of runs, hits it nicely to deep point, the third man has to run around and cut it off. WICKET! Rahane tucks it deep into the leg side for a single, square leg collects it. Peterson to Rohit, he is bowling a bit quicker than he is used to. Rohit does not offer a shot, a big shout for lbw but given not out, poor decision from Rohit. Next ball, he drives it to deep cover for a single.
Rohit guides the first ball to point for a single, Philander continues. Rahane blocks a few and then takes a single through point, India bring up their 100.
Peterson to Rahane, slaps it to midwicket for a couple of runs. Rahane plays out the rest of the over, India 98 for 4.
India trail by 75 runs, and the fight is on. Rohit and Rahane have to prove themselves and secure a place in this Indian middle order, and South Africa are looking to maintain their dominance on test cricket. After drinks, Smith brings Philander into the attack. Rahane threads the ball through the off side for a single. Rohit pushes the ball away from the slips and to the third man boundary, good shot to end the over.
Smith brings Peterson on to bowl, this pitch will help the spinner. Rohit blocks a couple of balls, Rohit comes down the wicket and hits it straight for a six, he is a good player against spin and dispatches Peterson out of the ground. Smith changes his field.
Lots of chat between Rohit and Steyn, Rohit happy to engage the fast bowler. He needs to back it up with a big knock here. Rahane ends the over with a boundary, good punch through the off side for four.
Morkel continues, Rahane drives it through cover for a single. Morkel pitches one outside off and it swings back into him, the pitch playing tricks. Rohit tucks the ball away to midwicket for a couple of runs to end the over.
Rohit and Rahane need to forget about the wickets this morning and need to build a strong partnership. There is still a lot of time to go in this test and South Africa will come at them hard. Rahane pushes it to deep fine leg for a single. Short ball and Rohit pulls it away for four to the deep square leg boundary, a well controlled boundary.
