England Twenty20 captain Stuart Broad praised Jos Buttler for a "game-changing innings" in the 28-run victory over South Africa.

The Somerset batsman smashed 32 off just 10 balls to help the hosts amass 118-5 in a game reduced to 11 over-per-side due to rain at Edgbaston.

Wayne Parnell came in for some particularly harsh punishment at Buttler's hands, going for two sixes and two fours, both coming courtesy of the right-hander's trademark scoop shot, during a penultimate over that went for 32.

The Proteas never really came close in their reply, Hashim Amla top-scoring with 36 as they finished up on 90-5.

"Jos's was a game-changing innings," Broad told Sky Sports.

"We know how good he is, he's shown on the county circuit that he does that, this is the first time he's done it in international cricket and going into the World Cup he can be very special."

Twenty20 defence

The result, which means the three-match series ends all-square, was the perfect boost for England before they fly out to Sri Lanka to defend their ICC World Twenty20 crown.

"The batting showed a bit of adaptability tonight," Broad added. "Jos jumped up the order because there were only four overs to go and those 10 balls changed the game.

"You have to be able to chop and change a bit, and that's what we did.

"I've learnt we've got a very good squad and I'm excited by the talent we've got. In Twenty20 you need guys who can change the moment and Jos did that.

"We've got a squad that can do very well in Sri Lanka, but it's important we don't get too far ahead."

Buttler was delighted to replicate his domestic form at the highest level having endured a frustrating start to his international career before his brutal knock.

"International cricket has not gone quite as well as I hoped for so far, so it's nice to contribute to a winning side," he said.

"It was an innings I was desperate to play in an England shirt. I could take confidence from what I've done for Somerset but to do it on the international stage is a really proud moment.

"It's nice to repay the faith that people have shown in you but tomorrow is another day and I've got to get back to working hard so I keep asking questions of the captain and coach."
