A court has overturned the life ban imposed on former India captain Mohammed Azharuddin.

Azharuddin was barred by India cricket chiefs from the sport 12 years ago for match-fixing, but the Andhra Pradesh High Court says the ban was imposed without enough evidence.

Azharuddin had previously challenged the ban in a civil court, but failed, but he has now succeeded in having it overturned.

The 49-year-old, now a politician in Uttar Pradesh, was banned for life in 2000 alongside Ajay Sharma, whilst Ajay Jedeja and Majoj Prabhakar were banned for five years each.

They were all accused of having links with bookmakers, and deliberately under-performing in return for money.

The match-fixing scandal came to light after the then South Africa captain, Hansie Cronje, confessed to match-fixing, claiming Azharuddin had introduced him to the bookies.

Azharuddin played 99 Tests for India and 334 ODIs, in a 15-year international career.
