One Day International Series
Buffalo Park, East London
South Africa won by five wickets South Africa go two-up in this five-match series with another straight forward victory. It was set up by the bowlers, restricting Sri Lanka to 236, a total that was always going to be fairly easy if a solid platform was provided. Smith, Amla, Kallis and the not out man Duminy all did their bit to provide that and despite a few unnecessary dismissals late in the piece the hosts were always in control. Join us again on Tuesday for the third ODI from Bloemfontein. Cheers
Over 49 Dilshan 0-0-2-3 237-5 - Dilshan's back and Morkel looks to end the game with one big slog sweep but he makes no contact. He slaps two down the ground and South Africa get home as Duminy sprints through for three after a Morkel cut but he should have been run out but Sangakkara doesn't field the throw! Oh well, it's all over, South Africa march on but some of the middle order batting was far from convincing in truth.
Over 48 Prasad 1-2-0-1-0-0 232-5 - Morkel flicks the ball wide of midwicket in effortless fashion but the sweeper gets around to restrict them to two. Five needed from twelve.
Over 47 Malinga 0-W-0-0-0-4 228-5 - Wicket! Disappointment for du Plessis as he chips a Malinga slower ball straight back to the bowler. One imagines the dismissal is nether her nor there in terms of the final result but Morkel (Albie that is) nearly does the exactly the same thing but Malinga can't hold on! Morkel ends the over with a boundary, clipped through midwicket, and South Africa now need 9 from 18.
Over 46 Prasad 2-0-1-1-0-0 224-4 - Prasad is back. Duminy miscues a heave over mid on but as is the case when things are going your way, it falls safely and he picks up two.
Over 45 Malinga 1-0-1-0-4-0 220-4 - In a reverse of the last over it's singles first up before du Plessis latches onto a leg side delivery from Malinga and helps it on its way to the fine leg fence.
Over 44 Kulasekara 4-1-1-1-1-1 214-4 - Du Plessis gets a little lucky as he comes down the track and skewers the ball over point. A boundary so early in the over is so important, it takes any pressure off and as a result the batsmen continue to dab the ball around. Du Plessis tries a hook late on and will be thanking his lucky stars that the top edge drops short of fine leg.
Over 43 Malinga 0-1-1-0-1-1 205-4 - Malinga comes back into the attack in one last throw of the dice for the Sri Lankans. It's all a bit too sedate though really, with singles sufficient for the home side and that's all they produce.
Over 42 Kulasekara 0-1-1-1-1-1 201-4 - Having played his part in the run out, Kulasekara comes into the attack. It's as if de Villiers never left though, as du Plessis and Duminy collect a handful of singles to bring up the 200.
Over 40 Herath 2-6-1-1-0-1 189-3 - Six runs! That's the stuff! Heaved over long on from Dunimy and it's out the ground so they have to find a replacement ball. De Villiers and Duminy exchange singles, the last of one brings up Duminy's fifty off 63 balls. A good effort.
Over 39 Dilshan 0-1-1-4-1-1 178-3 - Spin from both ends as Dilshan brings himself on. De Villiers attempts a reverse sweep and it goes all wrong, it really does look pretty awful when that shot goes wrong! But he sticks at it and tries again, this time making good contact and picking up four. The rate has really picked up since de Villiers came to the crease, there is finally some urgency.
Over 38 Herath 0-2-0-0-1-1lb 170-3 - A change of pace as Herath returns to the attack. Duminy whips a low full toss off his pads and picks up two for his troubles.
Over 37 Malinga 1-1-1-0-1-1 166-3 - No real surprise that Duminy and de Villiers are nudging the ball around and scampering through for singles, it's one of their biggest strengths, two real jack in the boxes.
Over 35 Malinga 0-0-1-1-0-2 152-2 - Duminy whips the ball into the midwicket region and a diving stop prevents the boundary but they're able to trot through for single. The middle order man picks up two to end the over, squeezing out a yorker into the point area.
Over 34 Prasad 0-1-1-1-1-1 148-2 - Dhammika Prasad comes back into the attack. The half-century stand comes up from 75 balls as Duminy takes one to short third man.
Over 33 Malinga 1-0-1-0-1-4 143-2 - South Africa decide to take their batting Powerplay. Back on comes Malinga. Hopefully we will get a bit of excitement as the last hour or so has been dire in terms of entertainment. Duminy takes one through square leg. Shot! And fielding! Lovely drive from Kallis, but Tharanga is equal to the task at cover. After Kallis takes one to cover, Malinga has big appeal for a nick off Duminy, but the umpire says not out. The noise he heard was from bat hitting ground. Kallis ends the boundary drought with four down the ground.
Over 32 Herath 1lb-1-1-0-0-1 136-2 - Kallis looks to use his feet but he ends up padding it away and his partner calls him through for an extra. Duminy takes one to long-off. Time for drinks.
Over 31 Dilshan 0-0-0-0-1-1 132-2 - Dilshan continues and he now as a man at short cover in for Duminy. The left-hander has picked up some easy runs through that area. He backs away and gets it through cover for a single. Kallis takes one to the leg-side.
Over 30 Herath 1-0-0-1-1-1 130-2 - The last boundary was 56 balls ago, but the South Africans won't mind as long as they can pick up the singles.
Over 29 Dilshan 0-1-0-0-1-0 126-2 - Sri Lanka have managed to dry up the boundaries, but the singles are coming too freely. The run rate is 4.42 to the over at the moment. Duminy works it into the covers for one. The Sri Lankans get excited again as Kallis is hit on the pad, but he was outside off-stump. Pushed down the ground for one.
Over 28 Herath 0-1-0-2-2-0 124-2 - Duminy has started well here. He's picking up singles easily and this is a good opportunity for him to find some form again. He strokes it down the ground for a single. Dilshan keeps the slip in for Kallis, but the veteran paddles it around the corner for a couple. Two more to fine leg.
Over 27 Dilshan 1-1-1-1-1-0 119-2 - The game is once again meandering along as the South Africans are happy to work the ball around the park and pick up the singles.
Over 26 Herath 1-1-1-1-0-0 114-2 - Nelson comes and goes quickly as they take four consecutive singles down the ground. Dilshan decides to put a bit of pressure on by bringing in a slip. After a few balls he adds a short mid-off.
Over 25 Dilshan 0-1-0-1-1-1 110-2 - Dilshan comes back into the attack. He really doesn't believe in giving the bowlers long spells. Pushed to long-off by Duminy. Bit of turn. Kallis works it through midwicket as does his left-handed partner.
Over 24 Herath 0-0-0-1-2-1 106-2 - Big shout for lbw as Kallis plays around one from Herath, but the umpire says not out. The Sri Lankans are confident and after deliberation they decide to refer it. Replays show it was going to miss leg stump. Worked down the ground for one by Kallis while Duminy gets two through point.
Over 23 N Kulasekara 1-0-0-1-1-2 102-2 - Change of ends for Kulasekara. Kallis rocks onto the back foot to punch it to the man on the cover boundary. Duminy also takes one through the covers. The over ends with two behind square.
Over 22 Herath 0-1-0-0-0-1 97-2 - Herath comes back into the attack. Duminy takes a single down the ground. Big shout for lbw as Kallis is hit on the pads with the arm ball, but it took a nick. Oooh! Some turn. Kallis keeps the strike with a paddle to the leg-side.
Over 21 Prasad 0-0-0-1-W-1 95-2 - Kallis picks up a single to third man with a late cut shot. WICKET! Prasad nabs another wicket for Sri Lanka and this time it is the important one of Amla. It's straight and there's no foot movement from the right-hander. He plays around it and the ball crashes into his stumps. JP Duminy gets a promotion up the order.
Over 20 N Kulasekara 0-0-0-4-0-0 93-1 - Dilshan continues to change is bowlers after every few overs. Nuwan Kulasekara is the man to come back into the attack. He tests Amla with a short one, but the right hander wants nothing to do with it. Shot! Amla goes over extra cover for four.
Over 19 Prasad 0-0-0-1-1-1 89-1 - The Sri Lankans fielders throw their bodies around to keep Amla on 49. He's too classy though as he picks up one to third man to bring up half-century No 16 from exactly 50 balls.
Over 18 Malinga 0-1-0-0-0-4 87-1 - Sri Lanka need another couple of wickets here to put the pressure on South Africa's middle order. Amla goes to 49 with a cut shot. Kallis finishes the over with four down to third man.
Over 17 Prasad 1-0-W-1-4-0 81-1 - Smith's partner Amla has no problems finding the gaps. This time he works it through midwicket. WICKET! The pressure gets to Smith as he goes for an attempted pull, but it's not short enough and he gets a top edge. Mid-off takes the catch to send the former South Africa skipper on his way for a patient 28. Amla turns over the strike to new man Jacques Kallis with a dab and run. Kallis is away with four down to deep backward square leg.
Over 16 Malinga 0-0-0-0-0-0 75-0 - Dilshan decides to take the bowling Powerplay. Mallinga is also back into the attack. Smith looks to steer it wide of the keeper, but there's not enough pace on the ball and Sangakkara takes it on the bounce. Smith is still not timing the ball well. He sees out the maiden.
Over 15 Dilshan 0-0-1-0-1-1 75-0 - Dilshan persists with his off-spinners and comes around the wicket to Amla and the left-handed Smith. No problems for the batsmen as drinks are called onto the field.
Over 14 Herath 1-1-1-1-0-0 72-0 - Herath does finally come into the attack now and he really needs to break this partnership or the games will surely slip away from their reach. He's got one slip in place, but he's not getting much turn off the pitch.
Over 13 Dilshan 0-4-4-1-0-0 68-0 - The skipper comes back and he beats Amla outside off. Nothing special about the delivery as Amla looked to drive. He follows it up with a superb late cut and lets it roll away for four. He really is showing of an array of shots as he turns it away down leg this time around. Same result. Its an interesting decision from Dilshan to bowl himself especially with Rangana Herath in the side.
Over 12 K Kulasekara 0-1-2-1-1-1 59-0 - Kosala Kulasekara comes into the attack now. Sri Lanka need a wicket desperately, but Smith and Amla are able to easily pick off the ones and twos as the field is a bit spread out now.
Over 11 Prasad 1-1-1-0-1-0 53-0 - The fifty partnership comes up and it's been decent going by Amla and Smith who came into the match desperate for runs. These two are doing well to keep the scoreboard ticking over with singles, while Amla's been cashing in with a few boundaries.
Over 10 Dilshan 4-0-1-1-0-0 49-0 - The skipper brings himself in to try and break this partnership, but Smith cuts hims square through the covers for four. Amla continues to manufacture shots and uses his wrists to work Dilshan away on the leg side.
Over 9 Prasad 0-0-1-4-1-1 43-0 - Prasad pins Smith in the chest. He probably just a bit early on the pull shot as it sat up a bit on the slow pitch. He manages to squeeze out a single to get Amla on strike who pulls with disdain backward of square for another boundary. He looks in great form, and he should after his hundred in Paarl.
Over 8 N Kulasekara 6-0-1-0-0-1 36-0 - Another six for Amla. He shuffles across his stumps and flicks it off his pads and it's a short boundary which he easily clears. APPEAL! There's an appeal for leg before, but that might have pitched outside leg and the umpire says not out.
Over 7 Prasad 0-1-0-1-0-0 28-0 - Dhammika Prasad comes into the attack for the first time in the series. Good enough start for Prasad who just concedes the single. At his pace, he could be very effective here at Buffalo Park.
Over 6 N Kulasekara 0-0-0-1-4-0 26-0 - There's another mix-up between Smith and Amla as both men set off for a run before loud shouts of "no". This may soon start to weigh on Amla's mind as he's becoming notorious for running team-mates out. Amla then walks outside off and whips the ball off his pads for through mid-wicket for a cracking four.
Over 5 Mathews 0-1-4-0-0-1 21-0 - Angelo Mathews comes into the attack now in place of Malinga who was just used for two overs. Mathews did well with the bat today, hopefully he takes that form into the field with him. Smith gets his first boundary of the day. It's slightly short from Mathews outside off and Smith drives it through the covers for four.
Over 4 N Kulasekara 1-0-6-1lb-0-2 15-0 - Smith stretches for a wide one and pushes it out to third-man for a single. Amla gets stuck in and launches Kulasekara over long-off for a classy six. Perfect shot from the right-hander as it wasn't a half-volley, he just got into a perfect position and pushed it over the ropes.
Over 3 Malinga 0-0-0-1-0-0 5-0 - It's looking a bit cloudy over Buffalo Park at the moment as Malinga looks for a bit of swing, but he's short of a length and Smith is able to work the ball away for a single.
Over 2 N Kulasekara 0-0-2-0-0-0 4-0 - APPEAL! Nuwan Kulasekara, playing in his 100th ODI, gets the ball to jag back and hits Amla on the pads, but it's comfortably missing leg and the umpire says not out. There's another belated call for a catch down leg, but not even the Sri Lankans were convinced and just asked the question to avoid it being called wide.
Over 1 Malinga 1-0-0-1-0 2-0 - Smith gets off the mark straight away with an easy single to mid-off. Amla is back to his old tricks of stuttering off for a run before returning. Smith has to hurry back at the non-striker's end after coming halfway down the pitch and a direct hit would have got him out. Missed opportunity for Sri Lanka.
All Set For The Chase Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla are back out in the middle and Lasith Malinga has ball in hand. Time to see how the Proteas handle the Buffalo Park wicket.
237 To Win Have Sri Lanka done enough here? It's not a very fast wicket as we've seen, but also a relatively small ground so a good start from South Africa could set them on their way towards chasing this down. As was the case with Hashim Amla in Paarl, they'll need someone to drop anchor and reach three figures, while Sri Lanka have the threat of Lasith Malinga up their sleeves.
Over 50 Steyn 4-2-1-0-1-W 236-6 - Mathews plays a cross-bat slog to cow corner and du Plessis comes running in to try and take the catch, but it goes under the fielder and over the ropes. Right decision to go for the catch, just got the execution wrong. Mathews goes again, this time much squarer and former skipper Smith goes charging around the boundary to make the stop. You don't often see him doing the sweeping duties. WICKET! Steyn ends the innings by claiming Mathews who hits it straight to Morne Morkel at mid-off.
Over 49 Tsotsobe 1-1-1-1-0-1 228-5 - Tsotsobe comes around the wicket to the right-handers now and he keeps them quiet. Just the five singles taken off the over and they really should be swinging a bit more especially with five wickets in hand.
Over 48 Steyn 0-1-1-1-4-1 223-5 - Steyn goes for the yorker, but he overpitches and it turns into a low full toss. Mathews fails to take advantage and flicks it straight to the man at mid-wicket. Double Nelson comes up in unorthodox fashion as Chandimal turns it around the corner fine for four. He nearly hits a return catch to Steyn, but it goes just wide of the bowler.
Over 47 Tsotsobe 4-4-0-2-1-1 216-5 - Chandimal goes for a big swing and he gets the edge, but it flies over backward point and to the boundary. Tsotsobe's not happy and decides to come around the wicket to cramp him up for room. Chandimal replies by scooping it over de Villiers for another boundary. Bit of a top edge as it clips the batsman's helmet on the way. Eighteen balls to go, this is turning out to be a very decent total.
Over 46 M Morkel 1-1-1-0-1-1 204-5 - The 200 comes up for Sri Lanka, which shows a great recovery after they were 21 for two. They will want to push for maybe another 30 or 40 in the last four overs as they've still got wickets in hand and two batsmen who are very familiar with boundary hitting.
Over 45 Steyn 0-0-1-0-2-1 199-5 - The speed of Dale Steyn comes back as he tries to get his first wicket of the day. It's very rare that he goes wicketless in an innings. Steyn strays down leg, but it nicks Chandimal's pads and fortunately he doesn't concede the wide. Decent over from Steyn has he only concedes four runs at this stage of the match.
Over 44 M Morkel 4-1-1wd-1-1-1-1 195-5 - Morne Morkel comes back into the attack now and cuts behind square for four more. The scoreboard is ticking over rather well for the visitors who seem a completely different side from the one we saw batting in Paarl on Wednesday. Mathews has injected a bit of pace into the game since coming in. This partnership is now 30 in the last four overs, going at seven-and-a-half.
Over 43 Peterson 0-1-6-0-1-1 186-5 - Mathews get his arms swinging an puts a blemish on Peterson's figures by launching him over the ropes. It's decent effort from the spinner who completes his ten overs with none for 44.
Over 42 Tsotsobe 0-1-1-1-1-1 177-5 - Tsotsobe is banging in the yorkers now from over the wicket and that's what's needed in these closing overs. Chandimal then steers him on the up to third-man and it's a comfortable single to get the new man Mathews on strike. He's not perturbed by being new to the crease and tries to go over the top, but but only gets the toe end as it falls wide of mid-on. Chandimal then looks to hit that out of the stadium, but gets a top edge and it lands safely near third man as three men were converging on it.
Over 41 Peterson 1-4-1-0-0-0 172-5 - The spinner comes back into the attack now and he's pushed down the ground before Chandimal sweeps him toward the boundary. There's a brave attempt to stop the boundary from Tsotsobe, but he's over the rope as he tries to make the save.
Over 40 Tsotsobe 1-6-1-1-W-2 166-5 - Lonwabo Tsotsobe comes back for another spell. Chandimal picks up with some excellent running between the wickets. Wow! Kulasekara stands and delivers once more. This time he hits a slower one straight down the ground for six. WICKET! Kulasekara looks to go down the ground again, but this time he doesn't get hold of it and it goes high in the air. Robin Peterson runs back from mid-on and takes an excellent catch over his left shoulder. Angelo Mathews joins Chandimal in the middle. Chandimal flicks it through square leg for two and that takes him to his second ODI 50 from 84 balls.
Over 39 Steyn 0-4-6-0-4-0 155-4 - Steyn has bowled well so far, but he hasn't been his usual self. He's been overshadowed by Morne Morkel and Tsotsobe so far in the series. Another swing and miss from Kulasekara. The right-hander backs away next ball and gets a thick edge that flies over the keeper. Steyn is furious. The bowler's mood will not be helped by the next shot as Kulasekara pulls over midwicket for six. That was stand and deliver and brings up the 150. After another swing and miss, he gets a thick edge wide of slip and picks up four more.
Over 38 M Morkel 4-W-0-0-0-1 141-4 - South Africa's bowlers have done well in the batting Powerplay so far. Shot! Jayawardene shows his class as he hits Morkel down the ground for four. WICKET! Soft, soft dismissal. Down the leg-side and Jayawardene looks to flick it, but he hits it to short fine-leg. Steyn dives to his left to take the catch. Nuwan Kulasekara is the batsman in. Wild swing from the new man. Next ball he chips into extra cover and nearly picks out the fielder.
Over 37 Steyn 2-0-1-1-0-1 136-3 - Dale Steyn returns to the bowling attack. Slightly short and pulled, but there is protection on the midwicket fence. Another pull shot, but the placement isn't quite there. Chandimal plays it hard to mid-on and takes off for one. Amla shies, but misses. The batsman was gone if it was a direct hit.
Over 36 M Morkel 0-2-wd-0-0-1-wd-0 131-3 - Chandimal is five runs away from a half-century. it is over 36 and time for the batting Powerplay. Back into the attack comes Morne Morkel. Chandimal cuts and beats the man at backward point. Couple of wides from Morkel.
Over 35 Duminy 1-1-1-1-0-1 126-3 - The spinners have really done well on this slow track, but Sri Lanka's spinners will like what they see here. Rangana Herath will have a big role to play later in the day if the visitors are to square the series. Chandimal and Jayawardene milk five singles from the over.
Over 34 Peterson 0-1-0-1-0-1 122-3 - Peterson scrambles to his right to cut off a single. Chandimal gets off strike with one through the on-side. He nearly runs himself out next ball. Jayawardene plays it to short third man and Chandimal wanders down the track. There's never a single there. The ball is returned and Peterson takes the bails off, but the batsman is safe. Worked through midwicket.
Over 33 Duminy 0-1-0-1-1-1 119-3 - JP Duminy comes back for his third spell and he has a slip in. His first two spells were two overs each. Shout for catch from bat/pad, but the bat and gloves were not close. Paddled around the corner by Jayawardene.
Over 32 Peterson 1-1-0-0-0-0 115-3 - The run rate has climbed to 3.6 to the over so they are doing their best to accelerate, but it's not good enough at the moment. They are not hitting enough boundaries. Time for drinks.
Over 31 M Morkel 1-3-1-0-1-1 113-3 - Worked to fine leg for one. Jayawardene cuts and it beats point. Albie Morkel, running around from fine leg, does well to keep it down to three.
Over 30 Peterson 0-0-0-1-0-0 106-3 - De Villiers keeps the slip in for Chandimal as he looks to build some pressure. Robbie P fires it in to the right-hander. Chandimal pulls, but it's only a single. And that's the only run off the over.
Over 29 M Morkel 1-1-W-0-0-0 105-3 - Morne Morkel is back into the attack. Couple of singles to the total. WICKET! Tharanga constructed his innings well, but he won't get to a century after being caught behind. He looks to cut down to third man but gets an edge to de Villiers. Mahela Jayawardene is the new man in. De Villiers brings in a slip.
Over 28 Peterson 0-4-1-wd-1lb-0-1 103-2 - The run rate is 3.50 to the over at the moment. Peterson comes back into the attack. Tharanga hammers it past the bowler for four and then picks up a single with a push to the same area. That brings up the visitors' century. Another wide. What's happening here. Two in the space of a few balls after bowling none for 26 overs. Shocking!! And now a leg-bye.
Over 27 Duminy 0-1-1-0-1-wd-1 95-2 - Cut away for a single by the right-hander. Plenty of shouting in Afrikaans from the South Africans. Tharanga pushes to square leg and de Villiers goes after it, but misses the stumps. Chandimal was gone if it was a direct hit. Duminy goes down the leg-side to concede the first extra of the innings.
Over 26 A Morkel 4-1-1-0-1-1 90-2 - The runs are coming freely now as Tharanga plays a wristy shot down to third man for a boundary and then takes a single to that area. Cut, but du Plessis dives to his left to cut off a boundary. He has been brilliant in the field.
Over 25 Duminy 2-1-0-0-0-1 82-2 - Duminy comes back into the attack. The two batsmen look like they have decided to step it up. Chandimal sweeps for a couple. De Villiers plugs that gap with a short fine leg. Short and pulled, but it is only a single.
Over 24 A Morkel 1-1-1-4-2-2 78-2 - This game is really meandering at the moment. Plenty of shouting from the South Africans in the field, but even the crowd has gone quiet. Tharanga looks to change things as he goes over mid-on. There are shouts of 'catch it', but it safe and rolls over the boundary. That brings up the half-century partnership. Wow! I thought it was back-to-back boundaries for a minute and got excited. The left-hander pulls, but Amla does well at fine leg and keeps it down to a couple. Again flicked to fine leg and this time the couple brings up Tharanga's 21st 50 from 69 balls.
Over 23 Peterson 0-0-1-1-1-1 68-2 - De Villiers brings a slip in for Chandimal as he has steered a lot of balls past the keeper. Worked around the park for a couple of singles.
Over 22 A Morkel 1-0-0-0-1-1 64-2 - De Villiers continues to mix things up and he brings Albie Morkel back into the attack. This game is going nowhere at the moment. Morkel draws a nick, but it falls well short of the wicketkeeper. Tharanga pulls for one and Chandimal steers it to third man.
Over 21 Peterson 0-1-0-0-1-1 61-2 - South Africa haven't given away any extras yet. Chandimal runs it to point for a single, Tharanga goes down the ground before the right-hander goes to fine leg.
Over 20 Tsotsobe 0-0-0-0-1-0 58-2 - Tsotsobe comes back into the attack. He was very effective early on and gave away just nine runs in five overs. He once again gives away no free runs as Chandimal's push to the leg-side is the only single off the over.
Over 19 Peterson 0-0-1-1-1-0 57-2 - Chandimal advances again and he is nearly beaten by the pace of the ball. Worked around the park by the two batsmen. The singles are coming a bit more freely now.
Over 18 Steyn 1-2-0-1-1-0 54-2 - Sri Lanka's half-century comes up with a single down to third man. Worked wide of short fine leg for a couple. Tharanga has played very well so far. He only had that one flash outside off which was referred upstairs. Another mistimed pull from Chandimal and he picks up one.
Over 17 Petersonl 0-0-4-1-0-1 49-2 - Time for more spin as Robin Peterson replaces Albie Morkel. Tharanga uses his feet and goes over mid-off for four. He looks to repeat the shot, but the bat turns in his hand and the man at long-on takes it on the bounce.
Over 16 Steyn 2-4-0-0-0-0 43-2 - South Africa decide to take the bowling Powerplay as Steyn comes back into the attack. Chandimal flicks the fast bowler away for two. Next one is cut wide of the keeper for a boundary. Chandimal is on the charge here.
Over 15 A Morkel 0-1-1-0-0-1 37-2 - Short one from Morkel and Chandimal mistimes his pull. The South Africans think it came off the bat and Duminy dives forward at square leg to catch the ball. The umpire says not out and replays confirm it came off the arm. Chandimal is in some discomfort and needs some treatment. The umpires decide it's a good time to call for drinks. When play resumes, Chandimal works it to square leg for one.
Over 14 Duminy 0-1-0-0-0-0 34-2 - The South Africans get excited as Duminy gets a bit of turn. Chandimal uses his feet, but he doesn't make proper contact and gets only a single to long-on.
Over 13 A Morkel 0-0-1-1-0-1 33-2 - De Villiers has a slip and short midwicket in for Chandimal at the start of the over, but he changes things almost every ball. Couple of easy singles.
Over 12 Duminy 0-1-0-0-0-6 30-2 - We will have some spin as JP Duminy comes into the attack. You have to say de Villiers is a proactive captain. Bit of turn and Chandimal steers it just wide of slip for a single. Shot! Tharanga uses his feet and dispatches Duminy down the ground for six.
Over 11 A Morkel 0-0-0-0-0-2 23-2 - One Morkel replaces another as Albie comes on for brother Morne. Dinish Chandimal is once again in ahead of Mahela Jayawardene, but he is not facing. Referral! Wide outside off and Tharanga goes after it. The South Africans are certain there was a nick and they go up unison. The umpire agrees, but Tharanga refers it. Replays show there is a noise, but HotSpot is showing no white mark. It's overturned. Tharanga picks up two wide of backward point.
Over 10 Tsotsobe 0-0-0-0-3-W 21-2 - Tharanga looks to pull but it's not short enough and he's through the shot too early. Lovely shot as the left-hander steers it through the covers and comes back for a third. WICKET! Tsotsobe picks up the big wicket of Sangakkara. Wide outside off and Sangakkara plays a tentative drive. He gets a thick edge and de Villiers takes a catch in front of him. Sangakarra was furious with himself as he was playing well away from his body.
Over 9 M Morkel 0-0-0-0-0-0 18-1 - The South African fielders are really throwing their bodies around this morning. It's making it very difficult for the two batsmen to get going as they can't keep the scoreboard ticking. First maiden of the day from Morne Morkel.
Over 8 Tsotsobe 0-0-0-0-1-4 18-1 - It is difficult to say what a good score is in East London. The average first innings is 243. Back to the over and Tsotsobe has given away no easy runs so far this series. Sangakkara takes a quick one to mid-on again. Tharanga finally makes solid contact as he cracks it through cover for four.
Over 7 M Morkel 0-4-1-1-0-0 13-1 - Tharanga cuts away for four. That will relief some of the pressure. Misfield at backward point gives him another single. Sangakkara takes a quick one to mid-on.
Over 6 Tsotsobe 0-0-0-0-0-0 7-1 - It has been a very good start by South Africa's bowlers and the fielders. Tsotsobe keeps a tidy line and length to Sangakkara.
Over 5 M Morkel 0-0-0-0-1-0 7-1 - Interesting. Early bowling change sees Morne Morkel replace Steyn. De Villiers is not afraid to make the changes. Slip and short mid-on in for Sangakkara. It's a case of 'yes, no, no' out in the middle and Tharanga is nearly run out. He comes down the track, but gets sent back and if it was a direct hit he would've been on his way. Sangakkara is finally off the mark with one to fine leg.
Over 4 Tsotsobe 0-0-0-0-0-0 6-1 - The band is in full swing now and the atmosphere is building at Buffalo Park. Still just one slip in, but AB de Villiers decides to bring fine leg into the circle. Tharanga slaps a couple hard, but he can't beat the fielders.
Over 3 Steyn 0-5-0-0-0-0 6-1 - Steyn has a staring contest with one of his team-mates as Sri Lanka get some overthrows. They take a quick single to mid-off and there's a shy at the non-striker's end, but no one is backing up.
Over 2 Tsotsobe 0-0-0-W-0-1 1-1 - Lonwabo Tsotsobe, who picked up three for 19 in the first game, will open from this end. Slip and a gully in for Dilshan. There is also a shortish square leg in. Tsotsobe goes past the edge with one that comes slightly back into him. WICKET! Slapped hard into the ground and the fielder at backward point does brilliantly to stop it. He gets up and hits the stumps. Dilshan decided to go for a quick single and first thought says he is just in, but the umpires go upstairs. It's a good move as he is just short of his ground. That was a brilliant piece of fielding so take a bow Faf du Plessis. Kumar Sangakkara replaces Dilshan in the middle. Sri Lanka are on the board with a single down the ground.
Over 1 Steyn 0-0-0-0-0-0 0-0 - It is Steyn to Upul Tharanga first up. Bang on target for the first couple of balls and Tharanga defends. De Villiers has a short mid-on in place. Slightly shorter and the left-hander backs away and does well to keep his hands down. Another short one and this time he has to duck.
And we are back The rain has stopped once again and the South African team and Sri Lanka's openers are back out in the middle.
Oh dear! South Africa make their way out to the middle and Dale Steyn starts to go through his warm-up routine and then it starts to drizzle again. Not what you want to see. It is going to be one of those days.
Teams: South Africa Graeme Smith, Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Faf du Plessis, Albie Morkel, Robin Peterson, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, Lonwabo Tsotsobe.
Sri Lanka Tillakaratne Dilshan (c), Upul Tharanga, Kumar Sangakkara (w), Mahela Jayawardene, Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal, Kosala Kulasekara, Nuwan Kulasekara, Lasith Malinga, Rangana Herath, Dhammika Prasad
Pitch report The ball will swing around this morning and there should be a bit of moisture in it, but it is a very good batting wicket.
Team news No surprises as South Africa name an unchanged side after their impressive display in the first game. Sri Lanka make two changes to Dhammika Prasad and Rangana Herath coming in for Ajantha Mendis and Dilhara Fernando.
Toss The rain has stopped and the toss can take place. AB de Villiers has won the toss and elected to bowl first with the nice cloud cover around. Tillakaratne Dilshan is happy to bat first.

Can Sri Lanka improve That was a terrible, terrible performance from the visitors at Boland Park on Wednesday. Surely they will improve today?
Bad news... They were just about to do the toss when it started drizzling. That of course means the toss has been delayed. Apparently they are expecting it to drizzle throughout the day.
Greetings Welcome to our live commentary for the second ODI between South Africa and Sri Lanka in East London. The home side currently lead the series after the record 258-run victory in Paarl in midweek and Sri Lanka will be looking to hopefully improve on their 43 all out.
