India v New Zealand Twenty20 Series 2012
M.A. Chidambaram Stadium
Result Well, that was a cracking ending... if you're a Kiwi. New Zealand win by one whole run, and Kohli's innings is for nought, despite having delivered his side on the brink of victory. Superb cricket though, a very entertaining match in Chennai, and the Black Caps will take the confidence to Sri Lanka.
Over 20 Franklin 1lb-4-1wd-1-W-2-2 166-4 - Dhoni hits a gorgeous pull, one bounce over the ropes, to make it 8 from 4. Franklin then gifts them a wide, and it's 7 from 4. Nerves! A single for Dhoni and it's 6 from 3. One big hit from Yuvi? No! WICKET! He swings and he's bowled! Six from two... Rohit gets two and they need four off the last ball. Nope, only two. Crowd is silent.
Over 19 Oram 2-1-1-1-6-1 155-3 - These are two big hitters, so the Black Caps are doing a superb job to restrict the boundaries. Yuvi looks exhausted, frankly. He pulls a shot out the hat though, swinging and lofting it for six over mid wicket. 13 required off the last over.
Over 18 Franklin 0-4-1-0-2-0 143-3 - Finally, a boundary! Dhoni swipes the ball to leg side from outside off stump and beats Guptill on the boundary. Superb bowling from Franklin, changing his pace and Yuvi can't hit it. India need some big hits now, 25 needed off 12 balls.
Over 17 Oram 1-0-1-0-0-1 136-3 - Oram's doing well too, restricting things to singles and with Kohli gone the run rate has dropped. There's an appeal for caught behind but it came off the pad only. It's getting tight! Only 12 runs from the past 3 overs.
Over 16 Franklin 1-0-1-1-1-0 133-3 - Five overs left and Dhoni seems happy to take the singles and put Yuvraj on strike. Superb over from Franklin, and there's a bit more pressure on India now.
Over 15 Vettori 0-1-1wd-0-0-1-1 129-3 - Vettori's change of pace is doing the trick here, and Dhoni can't get it away for big runs. Only five from it.
Over 14 Franklin 1-W-1-0-2-1 124-3 - James Franklin comes in to see if he can break the partnership. Yes he can! WICKET! Kohli's innings comes to an end for 70, hitting straight in the air to long off, where Tim Southee takes the catch diving forward. Meanwhile, news filters down that Mills is ok. Dhoni gets off the mark with two on the leg side, and then gets a single with a square cut.
Over 13 Vettori 1-6-1-6-1-1 119-2 - HUGE! Yuvraj picks it up off his pads from inside the crease and hits it into the second tier of the stands at long on! Massive! They take a single before Kohli does the same thing. They want to get this over and done with ASAP. Sixteen off it.
Injuries Mills has gone off the field with some help, but McCullum is still sitting on the ground. It will not do for the Kiwis to have two of their best players out of action for the World T20. Mills will certainly have a concussion after that.
Over 12 Milne 4-1-2-4-2-2 103-2 - Kohli waltzes down the track and drives Milne down the ground through cover, moving into the 60s as a result. Yuvraj steers a wider one to the point boundary for two, and then edges one past the slips for four. The crowd cheers as if he's scored a ton! He then brings up the 100 for India with a great cut on the up for two. OH MY WORD! Yuvraj skies the ball and McCullum and Mills collide heavily! The players all race to the scene, as do the physios, and it takes a while form Mills to get up. His head was hit hard by McCullum's elbow. Meanwhile, the catch goes down and Mills' eye is swelling already. Ouch.
Over 11 Mills 0-W-0-1-1-0 88-2 - The pace is back and WICKET! Raina hits Mills straight to mid off and Taylor takes the easiest of catches. In comes YUVRAJ! He gets off the mark with a single off his pads, before Kohli puts him back on strike with one to third man.
Over 10 Hira 2-1-1-1-6-1 86-1 - The batsmen are going at a steady rate, not slogging but still keeping up with the asking rate. They're ahead of New Zealand's score at the same point, and keeping wickets in hand should ensure a win. Raina undoes Hira's good work and steps down the pitch to bash the ball for six over long on.
Over 9 Vettori 1-1-1-1-4-1 74-1 - Vettori's still the economical bowler of yore, but a misfield sees a boundary for Kohli and he brings up his half century, yet another this summer.
Over 8 Hira 1-1-2-1-1-2 65-1 - Ronnie Hira comes on tow bowl and starts well, the batsmen giving him some respect initially and milking the singles and the odd two.
Over 7 Milne 4-0-4-0-1-1 57-1 - Milne comes on to bowl to salvage some pride, but is quickly cut by Raina for four, which brings up the 50. He adds another boundary with a risky top edge, and he'd have been out if McCullum had been a few inches taller. Ten from the over.
Over 6 Oram 0-0-0-0-4-0 47-1 - Oram cramps Raina for room and he can't get the ball away. The fourth ball is shorter and Raina tries to smash it, but misses and it goes through to the keeper. The pressure is released when Raina gets hold of a long hop and crunches it square past point. OMG! Milne nearly takes a stunner of a catch at long off, but he hits the ground hard and the ball pops out of his hands. Raina is saved!
Over 5 Vettori 1-4-0-2-0-0 43-1 - Kohli cuts a short, wide one from Vettori to the square boundary off the back foot, before the veteran spinner rips one past the youngster's bat. Yest another misfield from the Kiwis and Kohli adds two more to the total.
Over 4 Oram 0-1-0-4-1-4 36-1 - Oram into the attack, with Suresh Raina the new batter. But Kohli is on strike, and he gets a single off his pads second ball, Dan Vettori the fielder at square leg. Raina gets off the mark with a square cut, but can thank a misfield by Hira. Kolhi drives the final ball beautifully down the ground, perfect timing.
Over 3 Mills 1-0-1-4-1-W 26-1 - Kohli gets a single off his pads first ball. Mills shows his experience to the left-handed Gambhir, off-cutting it past the bat, before the Indian gets a single to extra cover. Kohli adds another four to his tally, driving it in the air over Mills' head. Nothing ugly about that shot. WICKET! Gambhir gets a leading edge off a slower ball and Mills dives to take it.
Over 2 Milne 4-1-0-1-4-1 19-0 - Bang! Virat SMASHES the 20-year-old through square, hitting it on the up and doesn't even bother to run. Another boundary comes off terrible fielding, Oram diving over the ball as it runs to long on.
Over 1 Mills 1-0-4-2-0-1 8-0 - Kohli opens the batting with Gambhir, in place of the injured Sehwag, and gets off the mark with a four off Mills. He adds two more and it's eight off the over. Good start for India as they need to go at 8.35 per over.
Innings break So India need 168 to win, and it was a superb effort from Brendon McCullum after losing two early wickets. India will need to get off to a good start and hope their deep batting line up can do the job.
Over 20 Balaji 1-2-4-1-2-1 167-5 - Balaji gets the final over, and they start off with a single to fine leg. The slower second ball is scooped into the air by Oram, and it should have been out, but the fielder does not read it in the air and it falls short. Oram then adds four more by flashing at a wide one and it races to third man, taking the score over 160. Fifth ball goes for two and it was a hideous full toss and a single ends the innings.
Over 19 Zaheer 4-0-4-1-0-1 156-5 - Oram brings up the 150 with a bottom edge that races to the boundary off a full-length ball. Zaheer responds with a yorker, and then Oram gets another lucky four with an inside edge to fine leg.
Over 18 Balaji 1-W-1-1-1-1 146-5 - Franklin can only add one run to the score before departing, scooping a leading edge off a slower ball high into the air and Yuvraj taking the catch. Jacob Oram comes in and gets off the mark with a single into the covers. They steal a single off the last ball as a yorker is trapped at the batsman's feet.
Over 17 Pathan 6-1-4-W-1-1 141-4 - Bosh! Taylor starts off with a six over long on, using his wrists to lift it over the fielder stationed there. McCullum then advances down the pitch and sends a cross-bat bludgeon in the air past Ashwin in the covers for four to move into the 90s. And then WICKET! McCullum is bowled, Pathan spinning a slower ball past the pads into leg stump. Superb bowling from the veteran.
Over 16 Kohli 1-1-2-1-4-4 128-3 - Kohli's doing a good job of keeping the runs down off his overs, unlike Ashwin, as Harbhajan looks on, probably wishing he was on the field. And then McCullum ruins the over with two boundaries off terrible deliveries. McCullum's taking strain though and looks exhausted.
Over 15 Ashwin 1-1-4-1-1wd-1-6 115-3 - Virat does a great job to save a boundary first ball, diving at long on and making it look like a catch as the crowd cheers. McCullum adds another boundary with an inside-out shot, piercing the gap between the boundary riders in the long on area. This final ball goes for six over long on as McCullum treats the full toss with disdain. Fifteen off the over.
Over 14 Kohli 0-1-1-1-1-1 100-3 - The scoring has slowed, obviously, as the batsmen get their rhythm back with some singles off Kholi. Just five singles from it and the 100 is up, the second 50 coming in just 34 balls.
Over 13 Pathan 4-1-W-1-1-1 95-3 - Irfan's back and is swept for four, using the pace of the ball as McCullum moves to 60. Then WICKET! Williamson tries to hoick Pathan off his legs, but scoops it in the air and is caught by a running Ashwin, making good ground from short fine leg. Ross Taylor gets off the mark with a single to third man.
Over 12 Kohli 1-0-4-1-1-2 87-2 - Kohli's given the ball and is swept for four, but the batsmen can't really get him away otherwise, despite heavy swipes. still, nine off it for the Kiwis.
Over 11 Balaji 4-0-2-1-1-1 78-2 - McCullum is nearing his fifty and Balaji is back. He reaches the milestone with a double-stepped four over extra cover. Super shot and knock by the veteran. Great cricket all round off the third ball. Good delivery, superb drive straight down the ground, wonderful fielding to keep it to two. Kane's not trying to copy his partner and just rotates the strike.
Over 10 Ashwin 1-1-1-1-6-1 69-2 - Yuvraj is off the field and Harbhajan comes on as a sub. The first ball is swept for a single, and then driven down to long on for one more. There's an appeal for LBW as McCullum reverse sweeps, but there was an inside edge and they get one more. B-Mac is not holding back here and dances down the wicket to Ashwin, heaving him over long on for six. Excellent over and partnership for the Kiwis.
Over 9 Yuvraj 1-6-1-1-0-1 58-2 - Bang! McCullum's no longer respecting Yuvraj and bashes a low full toss back over his head for six. Superb fielding off the fifth ball by the bowler prevents another boundary, and it was hit very hard! Excellent reflexes from Yuvi, but the physio is called to treat his left hand. Ouch, he's grimacing and shaking his arm. Ten off the over.
Over 8 Ashwin 0-1-0-2-1-4 48-2 - Ravi Ashwin, the tormentor in the Tests, replaces Balaji and goes for a single second ball. Williamson tried to use his feet but can only squeeze it for two, but McCullum hits the final ball for a boundary through cover. Eight from it.
Over 7 Yuvraj 1-0-0-1-1-1 40-2 - Yuvraj is handed the ball, the crowd roars in delight. Kane lofts it over to long off for a single. McCullum is all respect next ball, a forward defensive the shot, and then drives it down the ground for a single. Kane adds a back-foot drive for one, and then another to long off. Four off it, not bad Yuvi!
Over 6 Balaji 0-0-0-4-0-4 36-2 - Balaji is cheered as he starts his spell on his home ground, a dot ball first up his reward. The slower deliveries cause the batsmen to think a bit and they pop the ball back to him. The fourth ball goes for four, but it is very lucky. McCullum steps down the pitch and gets an inside edge, a Chinese cut if you like, and it runs to the ropes. The last ball is wide and McCullum swings and send the outside edge high over the slips and safely for four.
Over 5 Zaheer 4-1-1-2-4-1 28-2 - McCullum whips the first ball off his pads, past mid wicket for four in the air, and then takes a risky single but Raina misses with his diving throw. Two runs come from another leg side flick, but the fielder makes quick work of it and prevents the third run. McCullum is looking good here, and smacks another boundary past point as Khan strays short and wide. Good over for the Kiwis, 13 from it.
Over 4 Pathan 4-1-1-0-0-0 15-2 - Williamson crunches the first ball to the ropes through the covers, and then knocks a single to mid-on. Balaji scores a direct hit but Kane is safely home. Superb bowling from Irfan here, keeping it very tight and this is not the run rate the Kiwis were after.
Over 3 Zaheer 0-1wd-0-1-0-1-0 9-2 - McCullum faces his first delivery and can only block it. It's odd that he didn't open... Anyway, the next ball is a leg-side wide and he then squeezes one past point for a single. Zaheer then catches Williamson's outside edge, but it hits the ground before Dhoni can reach it. Tons of swing for the quicks here. The crowd cheers madly as Yuvraj fields the next ball.
Over 2 Pathan 0-0-W-4-0-0 6-2 - Brendon McCullum is the next man in. Guptill faces Pathan though, and can do nothing with the first two balls, which are full and straight. Then WICKET! Pathan sends the bails flying as Guptill tries to swing and misses. Kane Williamson comes in and gets off the mark with a cracking four, driving though the covers. He blocks out the next two.
Over 1 Zaheer 0-0-1lb-0-1-W 2-1 - First ball is blocked by Nicol, sporting a very pimp-style moustache, and is fielded at point. He swings wildly at the next one, which is wider and Dhoni has to dive to take it. The third whacks the pads and Zaheer appeals, but it's pitching and hitting outside the line. Lots of swing for the bowler. Guptill gets an outside edge that runs to third man for a single and then WICKET! Zaheer bowls Nicol around his legs. Superb over.
The players are on the field, India's lads are having a huddle and a chat, the crowd roars for Yuvraj. Here we go!
Suresh Raina reckons India will be able to chase 'any target'... as long as it's around 160/170. MS Dhoni and Raina play here for the Super Kings and know the ground well, so we'll trust them on that.
