New Zealand v Pakistan commentary

Pakistan win by 13 runs Pakistan win by 13 runs in their first game of the tournament. New Zealand did not have a good day in the field, dropping two important catches. Their batting line up was unpredictable and did not deliver the goods. Pakistan posted 177, the Kiwis in reply scored 164. A good performance from Pakistan, New Zealand have many things to work out. The man of the match is Nasir Jamshed for his fantastic innings.

Over 20 NZ 164/9 (Mills 0, Milne 0) 19 needed from 6 balls. Ajmal the bowler. Southee swings and misses. WICKET! Southee top edges one to the third man who is inside the circle. Ajmal picks up another one. Mills comes in with 18 required from 3 balls. McCullum cover drives this for a four, the Kiwis now need 14 for 2 balls. This would have been a wide but McCullum tries to get a six and gives an easy catch to the match in the deep. WICKET! Ajmal picks up another one, McCullum not happy. Pakistan win by 13 runs.

Over 19 NZ 159/7 (Southee 1, N. McCullum 1) NZ need 34 from 12. Taylor finds the fence, four from the first ball. Another four this time at the point boundary. Gul under pressure. Third ball also gets the same treatment. A full toss from Gul goes to the boundary. WICKET! Umar Akmal with the flat throw and the keeper does the rest. A sharp throw and Taylor is short of his crease. There was no second run there, a bad call from the captain. The Akmal brothers put their side in front. Southee comes in and takes a single.

Over 18 NZ 144/6 (Taylor 12, N. McCullum 0) A short conference between Afridi, Hafeez, Gul and Tanvir. Gul gets the ball, the Tanvir gets it. This could be costly if it goes wrong for Pakistan. Six! Franklin starts the over with a flat six off the slower ball. Franklin goes again, this time on the off side for a four. Is this the chance that the Kiwis needed to sneak back into this game? The required rate comes down from 17 or 18 to under 15. WICKET! Franklin pulls it straight to Jamshed who takes an easy catch. Franklin goes and Nathan McCullum comes in.

Over 17 NZ 131/5 (Taylor 11, Franklin 2) So Ajmal continues and everyone tries to figure out the logic behind the batting order. WICKET! Oram plays a big sweep, misses it and Ajmal hits the leg stump. Oram is bowled and who know who will come in next. Franklin comes in. Ajmal drops Franklin! a difficult caught and bowled chance. Missed it and misses the run out chance too. Taylor picks it up and sends it out of the ground for a six!

Over 16 NZ 121/4 (Taylor 3, Oram 11) Gul comes in. A good performance from Pakistan overall. WICKET! McCullum edges this on to his pad then it bounces and hits the stumps, and is bowled! It was a good ball, but McCullum is disappointed to get out in that fashion. Taylor comes in, Franklin has not batted yet. The run rate now 14, surely Pakistan should win from here. Oram pulls one to long on and they get two. Oram walks outside the off stump and plays it to fine leg for four. We are in for some creative batting here from Oram, and it is needed too. Hafeez checks his field again. Oram slices it for four at third man.

Over 15 NZ 108/3 (McCullum 32, Oram 1) Ajmal provides the break through WICKET! The Vettori experiment has officially failed. The required rate now is 13 per over and Vettori goes after scoring 18 from 15. Oram coming before Taylor, is the captain injured? Oram tries to sweep Ajmal, missing it completely. A slip in place, Oram comes down the pitch and gets a single. McCullum reverse sweeps and top edges one to the boundary, a risky shot against Ajmal.

Over 14 NZ 102/2 (McCullum 28, Vettori 18) NZ need 86 more from 7 overs, out of which Ajmal will bowl 3. But here comes Hafeez for his last one. McCullum is the key to this chase, Vettori should try to take the pressure off by scoring some runs too. Another reverse sweep, just a single. Akmal completes a stumping, but Vettori's foot is grounded behind the crease. The keeper shakes his head, umpire refers it, not out says the third umpire. Vettori manages to get some bat on that after going outside the leg stump, just gets a couple for his efforts. McCullum hits a six from the last ball of the over. A much needed boost.

Over 13 NZ 92/2 (McCullum 21, Vettori 15) Vettori reverse sweeps to Tanvir who fires the ball in to the keepers gloves. It looked close, but McCullum is in by a mile. Vettori comes down the wicket and hits it straight down the ground for four. A good shot from him. Afridi bowls a wide, this will help the Kiwis. 9 from the over, the required rate now 12.28

Over 12 NZ 83/2 (McCullum 19, Vettori 9) Saeed Ajmal comes in to bowl for the first time today. McCullum dancing in and around the crease trying to attack Ajmal, but unable to do so. Vettori will face Ajmal after a single. McCullum reverse sweeps Ajmal for a four, the bowler won't mind this as there is a chance of a wicket. Jamshed misfields at the boundary, McCullum get a four from his cover drive.

Over 11 NZ 73/2 (McCullum 10, Vettori 8) The Vettori experiment has not worked so far, Afridi continues with his sliders and faster ones. Vettori tries the reverse sweep and misses. Seven from the over, the run rate required is now 11.66.

Over 10 NZ 66/2 (McCullum 8, Vettori 3) Vettori plays his elaborate sweep, NZ need more than 10 per over now. Ajmal has not bowled yet, Hafeez continues. The singles and twos wont hurt Pakistan here, the boundaries have dried up. Hafeez tries the pause before bowling, like Ashwin. Just four from the over, after 10 NZ are 66 for 2.

Over 9 NZ 62/2 (McCullum 7, Vettori 1) Afridi starts with a wide. Taylor has promoted Vettori for some reason. A big shout by Afridi, started appealing late, the umpire amused. McCullum under edges one, it goes through the keeper for four. Six from the over it is 62 for 2.

Over 8 NZ 55/2 (McCullum 2, Vettori 0) Hafeez brings himself on, Ajmal kept for later. A chance of a run out at the non striker's end. Pakistanis look confident, Jamshed fires it to Hafeez who does the rest. Williamson is out WICKET! The Kiwis have lost both their openers.Vettori comes in, before Taylor! Are they trying to confuse Pakistan in thinking they have taken more wickets than they have? Not sure about the logic here. Hafeez bowls another good over.

Over 7 NZ 54/1 (McCullum 1, Williamson 15) Spin introduced in the form of Afridi, Williamson cuts him past Gul for four. The fifty partnership comes up for NZ. WICKET! Afridi goes through Nicol's defenses, a really good ball. Nicol bowled, Brendon McCullum comes in at three. He should have opened the innings. Afridi breaks the partnership, a good over from him.

Over 6 NZ 47/0 (Nicol 31, Williamson 10) Gul changes ends, bowling with the wind now. Nicol top edges this one, and it flies over the keeper for four. Nicol dances down the pitch, misses the ball, the ball misses the stumps, keeper collects it safely. It is run down the fine leg, Tanvir cuts it off and keeps it down to two. After the powerplay the Kiwis going nicely, 47 for no loss.

Over 5 NZ 38/0 (Nicol 24, Williamson 9) The asking rate now 9.5 as Arafat comes in to bowl. Williamson walks across his stumps and Arafat bowls it on the leg stump, good fielding by Tanvir at fine leg. Nicol looks to cut loose with a boundary at long off, powerful stroke but slightly mishit. Arafat responds with a wide. The movement in the crease from both these batsmen, forcing the change of line. Nicol replicates the previous four with another one, this one was a bit better. A good over for NZ, 12 from it.

Over 4 NZ 26/0 (Nicol 14, Williamson 8) Pakistan have lots of bowling options. NZ will look to take risks and run hard between wickets to keep up with the scoring rate. Tanvir is bowling a better over than his previous one. A clean shot from Williamson to finish the over, one bounce four.

Over 3 NZ 18/0 (Nicol 11, Williamson 3) Gul replaces Hafeez, Afridi talking to him about something. A good ball to start with, Nicol comes down the wicket and misses it completely. Gul is disappointed that the ball missed the stumps. A wide down leg to follow. After starting with a good ball, Gul has strayed in line and length. But he finishes with a good over, just 5 from it. NZ need to score faster than this rate.

Over 2 NZ 13/0 (Nicol 11, Williamson 1) Tanvir runs in to bowl, the wrong footed bowlers and Nicol picks it up over the fence for a six, he can be dangerous if he gets going here. It is a surprise that Tanvir is picked instead of Razzaq and his given the new ball instead of Gul. He has not bowled that well and is giving run away. A wide, this is turning out to be a big over for the Kiwis. 12 from that over, 13 for no loss after 2.

Over 1 NZ 1/0 (Nicol 1, Williamson 0) NZ need 178 to win, and are missing Guptill. Taylor said that they can't count on McCullum to score runs every time, but they will hope for a good knock here. Hafeez gets the ball, Nicol opens with Williamson. All the records favour Pakistan here, can the Kiwis change that? A good over to start from Hafeez, just one from it.

Over 20 PAK 177/6 (Malik 9) Malik joins the party, hitting it over the covers for four. Southee, this time, giving some runs away. The 170 comes up, and Afridi is on strike. Southee bowls it just inside that white wide ball line, a good dot ball. This time Southee bowls it just on the line and it is called a wide, a good call by the umpire. Afridi hits it cleanly for a one bounce four, Pakistan in the driving seat again. WICKET! Williamson takes a good catch, Afridi gets out as he tries to score a six from the last ball. Pakistan end up with 177 for 7, a good batting performance.

Over 19 PAK 165/5 (Afridi 6, Malik 4) Oram to bowl the second last over. Last five overs the Kiwis have taken 3 wickets and given away on 30 runs. Akmal picks this one from outside off and hits it between mid wicket and mid on for four. This time he comes down the wicket and provides the elevation for a six over long off. Oram giving away important runs. WICKET! This time Akmal hits it high in the air but it does not clear the fence, finding Nathan McCullum who takes a simple catch. Boom Boom Afridi comes in, can he take them over 180? Starts off with a strong cut shot that flies to the boundary. A big over for Pakistan, 17 runs from it.

Over 18 PAK 148/4 (U. Akmal 13, Malik 3) Southee will bowl the 18th and 20th overs. Pakistan will be looking to score around 160 to 170 runs. Akmal looks at the umpire, pleading for that one to be called a wide, but it was a good ball. Similar ball from Southee, just inside that white line that is a wide indicator, very good bowling. Just three runs from this over, a good one for NZ who have pulled things back.

Over 17 PAK 145/4 (U. Akmal 12, Malik 1) Mills bowling his last over now. Akmal plays the Dil-scoop to end the boundary drought. Another boundary, a good shot from Akmal this time down to third man. Just waited for it and played a good late cut in the end. A good over for Pakistan, Mills bad day continues.

Over 16 PAK 135/4 (U. Akmal 3, Malik 0) New Zealand have slightly slowed down the Pakistani progress, but Jamshed is still out there. Vettori comes in to bowl his last over. WICKET! Nathan McCullum takes the catch and the danger man, Jamshed, has to walk. He goes out for 56, McCullum looks like he has been hurt after the catch, but seems fine now. Shoaib Malik comes in to bat. A good over from Vettori, the crucial wicket of Jamshed and four runs from it.

Over 15 PAK 131/3 (U. Akmal 0, Jamshed 55) Lots of batting to come for Pakistan, the crowd enjoying the cricket. Oram stops a bullet from Jamshed who drills this one straight back at the bowler. Akmal pulls and pulls hard, Williamson does well to stop it at the boundary and keeps it down to two runs. WICKET! Akmal slashes hard and finds the fielder, Nicol takes a easy catch. The junior Akmal, Umar comes in. Five overs to go, its 131 for 3.

Over 14 PAK 125/2 (K. Akmal 1, Jamshed 52) Good support for Pakistan here at Pallekele, Taylor not sure which bowler to turn to. Franklin gets the ball, and is worked away on the leg side towards fine leg, Oram does well to keep it down to two. A lot of 'yes' and 'no' for that run, eventually the misfield allowed them the single. A big wide from Franklin down the leg side. Hafeez swings and misses, bowled!, and Franklin has broken a good partnership. WICKET! Hafeez goes for 43, Pakistan in a good position. The senior Akmal, Kamran, comes in to bat. A good over from Franklin, 7 runs and the wicket.

Over 13 PAK 118/1 (Hafeez 40, Jamshed 50) Oram into the attack, the Kiwis are giving away a lot of runs and they have dropped 2 catches. What a shot! the fielder had no chance of stopping that flick through the leg side. Another boundary for the in form Jamshed who gets his 50 from a single just after that four. A well controlled and composed innings putting his side in a good position.

Over 12 PAK 110/1 (Hafeez 38, Jamshed 44) Guptill is not playing today, and the Kiwis will surely miss him. Vettori comes in to bowl. Pakistanis playing safely against the experienced spinner. Jamshed is out-scoring Hafeez already. Just 5 from the over it is 110 for 1.

Over 11 PAK 105/1 (Hafeez 36, Jamshed 41) Mills brought back into the attack. This pair has put on more than 50 runs in no time, Jamshed brings up the 50 partnership with that cut shot boundary. He is a very strong batsman and uses his wrists to good effect too. Clumsy fielding here, Franklin has a go at the stumps and overthrows cost the Kiwis two runs. There was no need for that throw, Jamshed was home safely. Nicol spills this over the boundary gifting Jamshed with another six, some more bad fielding. Mills is unhappy, he should have had 2 wickets by now. Instead it is 13 from the over.

Over 10 PAK 92/1 (Hafeez 36, Jamshed 28) Vettori comes back to calm things down. Jamshed is looking to score quickly here, he does not want to block. Vettori keeping him in check with his experience and variations. After 10 overs Pakistan are going nicely at 9.2 runs per over.

Over 9 PAK 86/1 (Hafeez 32, Jamshed 26) Hafeez dispatches a full toss out of the park for a 87 meter six, just when we thought he was going to play the anchor role. McCullum disappointed with himself. Jamshed goes in the same area as Hafeez, lifted it over the covers for a six, a very good shot. McCullum will be replaced soon, 13 from this over.

Over 8 PAK 73/1 (Hafeez 25, Jamshed 20) The right hand and left hand combination for Pakistan working well here as Milne, the new man, comes in to bowl. His form has not been the best, but he will hope to change that today. Milne spoils a good over by giving a six from the last ball, Jamshed making no mistake, pulling it strongly over the fine leg boundary.

Over 7 PAK 61/1 (Hafeez 21, Jamshed 12) Pakistan have started well with a run rate of 8.5 in the powerplay and just losing one wicket. Nathan McCullum runs in to ball. Jamshed simply lifts this one over the field for six, placed it well and made it look easy. He takes a single off the next ball. Another good over for Pakistan, 10 from it

Over 6 PAK 51/1 (Hafeez 19, Jamshed 4) A shout again for lbw, but this time again the bounce saving the batsman. Driven straight for a four by Nazir, he was looking to hit it through the covers but the strong inside edge helped him there. WICKET! Southee takes a good catch in his follow through, Nazir just hits it back to the bowler and can't believe what he has done. Nazir goes for 25, another start that was not converted into a big score. Another hitter, Jamshed comes in to bat with his captain. He gets off the mark with a confident two, the new man Milne doing the fielding.

Over 5 PAK 42/0 (Hafeez 18, Nazir 21) Oram comes in to the attack, the Kiwis changing the bowling again. Nazir comes down and edges it past the keeper for four. Then he plays something like a flick and a pull for another four, this time down the leg side. Pakistan have started well, things would have been different if Taylor had not dropped Hafeez. The captain joins the action driving it over the covers for four, another good shot from him. This pair has also picked up singles to keep the strike rotating. After 5 it is 42 for no loss.

Over 4 PAK 28/0 (Hafeez 14, Nazir 12) Southee comes into the attack. Pakistan making hay while the sun shines. Southee starts with a wide. Sri Lankan wickets have changed, Murali seems to have taken the turning pitches away with him. A nice shot from Hafeez, just a punch on to the leg side for four. The batsman is not happy with something behind the bowlers arm, may be someone walking in front of the sight screen. Nicol puts in a good effort to keep it down to a single, a good shot and some good work in the field. A shout for lbw but the umpire not interested, a bit too high for a lbw.

Over 3 PAK 21/0 (Hafeez 9, Nazir 11) Mills continues, drifting slightly down the leg side, but getting away with it. Nazir will look to score quickly, just playing his natural game. Four! Nazir squeezes that with some excellent timing through the covers for four. Then lobs one in the air, but it lands safely, very few players outside the circle because it is the powerplay and Nazir gets two more. Boundary from the last ball of the over so its 21 for no loss.

Over 2 PAK 9/0 (Hafeez 9, Nazir 0) Vettori gets the new ball, a surprise for the batsmen. Six! Hafeez comes down the wicket and played it straight down the ground for a six. Pakistani batsmen will feel comfortable against spin, or the lack thereof. Vettori now bowling flatter and quicker. After 2 overs, its 9 for no loss.

Over 1 PAK 1/0 (Hafeez 1, Nazir 0) Mills to start off for the Kiwis. Nazir and Hafeez for Pakistan, Hafeez on strike. Dropped! The edge from Hafeez flies to first slip and Taylor drops it, a straight and easy catch and spilled by Taylor. How costly will this prove in the end? Just one from the over, should have been a wicket too.

Team changes Martin Guptill is injured and replaced with Adam Milne, a fast bowler. This will affect the Kiwi batting line up. Pakistan making a few changes, leaving out Mohammad Sami, Raza Hasan, Abdul Razzaq and Asad Shafiq. Yasir Arafat will play instead of Razzaq, so they are expecting the wicket to turn.

Toss Pakistan have won the toss and will bat first. It is bright and sunny with some showers forecast later on. It is their first game of the tournament and they will look for a good start to their campaign. New Zealand will be planning to bowl well and then chase down the total with McCullum in good form. Pakistan spinners may have different ideas, overall it will be an enthralling contest.
