NEW ZEALAND LEAD THE SERIES 1-0 The hosts fully deserve their 189-run victory, they have outplayed England in all departments during a Test that appeared to be going nowhere until it exploded into life on the fourth evening. Ryan Sidebottom is the only Englishman to emerge with much credit from the defeat, finishing with match figures of 10-139, including a second innings hat-trick. England have an immediate opportunity to respond as the second Test starts in Wellington on Thursday. Thanks for your company throughout the five days and you're welcome to log-on again on Thursday at 2130h (GMT) for over-by-over commentary on the next instalment of the series. Apparently the pitch at the Basin Reserve is the fastest in New Zealand so there's something to look forward to. Cheers.
Over 62 - Oram 0-0-0-0-1-W 110ao - Wicket! Panesar edges behind to McCullum, who takes the catch diving forward. NEW ZEALAND WIN THE FIRST TEST BY 189 RUNS.
Over 61 - Mills 0-0-0nb-0-0-0-0 108-9 - Panesar looks to have a decent enough technique on this slow pitch. The problems with his batting seem to emerge when the fast bowlers pitch it short on the quicker pitches. Brett Lee terrorised him with bouncers during the latter stages of last winter's Ashes.
Over 60 - Oram 0-0-0-0-0-0 108-9 - Oram returns for a second spell with 15 minutes until tea. He starts with a maiden.
Over 59 - Mills 0-4-0-0-0-0-0 108-9 - Panesar is only dealing in boundaries, his second four races away off the edge down to third-man. That means the last-wicket partnership is now worth 31, the highest of the innings.
Over 58 - Patel 0-0-0-0-0-6 104-9 - Bell completes his 18th Test half-century (140b, 5x4 2x6) by dancing down and lofting Patel back over his head for six. Here is one for the stattos - there was a run of 25 dots in between Bell's two sixes.
Over 57 - Mills 0-0-0-0-0-0 98-9 - Panesar wafts at a delivery angled across and is fortunate not to get an edge.
Over 56 - Patel 0-0-0-0-0-0 98-9 - Bell is three away from his half-century. The pitch has had nothing to do with a 'disgraceful' (David Gower's choice of word) batting effort from England today. Mills is returning to the bowling attack and needs a wicket to complete his five-fer.
Over 55 - Vettori 0-0-0-0-0-0 98-9 - As New Zealand only require one wicket for victory, the tea interval will not start until 0240h (GMT). There are a minimum of 33 overs left in the Test.
Over 54 - Patel 0-0-4-6-0-0 98-9 - Bell picks the length early and slog sweeps over midwickets for four. He then puts on his disco shoes and produces an even better stroke, driven all the way over long-off for six. England are within two runs of a collective three figure score.
Over 53 - Vettori 4-0nb-0-0-0-0-0 88-9 - Pleasing stroke from Panesar, driven along the ground through mid-off for four.
Over 52 - Patel 0-4-0-0-0-0 83-9 - Bell hits a high note, stepping down and lofting for four to the midwicket fence. Panesar will now be on strike to Vettori.
Over 51 - Vettori 0-0nb-0-0-1-0-0 79-9 - Bell works a single behind square on the off-side and Panesar safely negotiates the final two deliveries of the over.
Over 50 - Patel 2-0-1-0-W-0 77-9 - Patel is brought back into the attack. Wicket! Harmison pushes forward and edges to slip, where Fleming doesn't take it cleanly but manages to juggle and cling on with the ball wedged between his arms and mid-riff. The end is near as Panesar strolls out to join Bell.
Over 49 - Vettori 0-1-0-1-0-0 74-8 - Harmison drives into the covers for a single for his first run (and possibly last?) of the series. I don't think it was fair of England to reshuffle their batting order for this Test in order to make room for Strauss. Bell should have stayed at three and Collingwood at five for this Test with Owais Shah slotting in at six. But they have set their stall out and are unlikely to change course mid-series. Time to crack open Red Bull No.3 - don't try this at home youngsters.
Over 48 - Martin 0-0-4-0-0-0 72-8 - Bell steers down to third-man for four from the third delivery. But he can't farm the strike this time, meaning Vettori gets a crack at Harmison.
Over 47 - Vettori 0-0-0-0-0-1 68-8 - Bell retains the strike by skipping down the pitch and having a wild heave that dribbles into the leg-side for a single.
Over 46 - Martin 4-0-0-W-0-0 67-8 - Wicket! Martin gets his man. After giving Hoggard a working over with some short stuff, it is the pitched up delivery outside off-stump that finishes things off. Hoggard can't resist throwing his hands into a drive and the resulting edge ends up in the hands of McCullum, tumbling to his right. Harmison has already done better than first time around by surviving his first two deliveries.
Over 45 - Vettori 0-0-0-0-0-0 63-7 - Bell resists for another six deliveries, he will have his eyes on a red inker. Vettori, as usual, is mixing up his pace and flight intelligently.
Over 44 - Martin 0-0-0-0-0-0 63-7 - All New Zealand's fielders are either in the slip cordon or catching round the bat as Martin attempts to bounce out Hoggard. The plan should have worked but Mills grasses an absolute sitter at leg-gully as Hoggard fends off his chest.
Over 43 - Vettori 0-0-0-2-0-0 63-7 - England are at least 46 overs away from safety, not impossible but highly unlikely with only Harmison and Panesar to come. What changes should be made for next week's second Test? It starts at the Basin Reserve in Wellington on Thursday and Stuart Broad for Harmison is a no-brainer. Other than that it is hard to see what else to change.
Over 42 - Martin 0-0-0-0-0-0 61-7 - Hoggard's feet look as if they are stuck in clay. He's lucky not to get an edge after following an away swinger with his hands.
Over 41 - Vettori 0-0-0-0-0-0 61-7 - Vettori wheels his way through another maiden to take us to drinks.
Over 40 - Martin 0-0-0-0-0-0 61-7 - Hoggard has a decent defensive technique and is England's last hope of salvaging a draw. However, they don't deserve to (and won't) leave Hamilton with anything from this match.
Over 39 - Vettori 0-0nb-0-0-0-0-0 61-7 - Four men round the bat for Bell as New Zealand sniff an early finish. England fans are packing up and getting starting to leave, they've seen enough.
Over 38 - Martin 1-0-W-0-0-W 60-7 - Wicket! The return of Martin to the attack accounts for Ambrose, who is squared up and the delivery passes his outside edge on its way to hitting the top of off-stump. Sidebottom makes his way to the middle, willow in hand, knowing all his good work with the ball is going to count for nothing. Wicket! Sidebottom walks after edging his third delivery behind. This is sorry stuff.
Over 37 - Vettori 0-0-0-W-0-0 59-5 - Wicket! 'Brigadier Block is gone,' says Bob Willis in the Sky Sports commentary box after Collingwood chops onto his stumps to end a 50-ball vigil for two runs. It was too close to his body for the shot.
Over 36 - Patel 0-0-2-0-0-0 59-4 - Luckily I've got a stash of two cans of Red Bull remaining to see me through to the conclusion of this game. I'm worried it may not be enough if this partnership develops into an epic.
Over 35 - Vettori 0-0-0-0-0-4b 57-4 - Vettori shoves the final delivery down the leg-side for four byes to wake everyone up.
Over 34 - Patel 0-0-0-0-0-0 53-4 - Collingwood is just presenting a straight bat with no backlift. Block. Block. Block. Block. Block. Block. Love it.
Over 33 - Vettori 0-1-0-0-0-0 53-4 - The skipper is back into the attack. I imagine New Zealand's two spinners could be in for a lengthy spell in tandem now the shine has come off the new ball.
Over 32 - Patel 0-0-0-2-0-0 52-4 - Collingwood doesn't even come close to the record, flicking his 34th delivery faced through midwicket for a couple. What a relief for all concerned.
Over 31 - Mills 0-0-0-0-0-0 50-4 - McCullum comes up to the stumps to prevent Bell moving outside his crease. Maiden from Millhouse.
Over 30 - Patel 0-0-0-0-1-0 50-4 - England's tail starts at number eight with Sidebottom, who at least has a decent defensive technique. In other words, England's hopes of a draw rest on a big partnership between these two. Collingwood still has some way to go before breaking the record for the longest number of balls faced to get off the mark in a Test. The record is 80, Collingwood has faced 30 without scoring thus far.
Over 29 - Mills 0-0-0-0-1-0 49-4 - Collingwood has yet to get off the mark, it's been 29 balls now. A sign of things to come.
Over 28 - Patel 2-4-0-1-0 48-4 - Bell has timed it sweetly since lunch, two off the back foot are followed by four eased through extra cover.
Over 27 - Mills 0-0nb-0-0-0-0-0 41-4 - Mills is given an immediate opportunity after lunch to build on his four-wicket burst with the new ball. He's back on the spot straight away with just a no-ball from the over.
Over 26 - Patel 4-0-0-0-0-0 40-4 - Off-spinner Patel is brought on for the first over after lunch. He starts with a wide half-volley that Bell strokes through extra cover, but then makes a good comeback, passing the outside edge as Bell stays on the back foot.
LUNCH England reach lunch on the fifth day in big trouble at 36-4 in pursuit of 300 for victory. A win appears to be out of the equation for the tourists and they now face a two-session fight for survival. Play resumes at 0010h (GMT), join us then.
Over 25 - Vettori 0-0nb-1-0-0-0-1 36-4 - Eagle-eyed umpire Davis correctly turns down an lbw appeal against Bell - replays show there was an inside edge. That takes us to lunch at Seddon Park.
Over 24 - Oram 0-0-0-0-0-0 33-4 - The commentators (Atherton and Simon Doull) make a good observation - New Zealand's wicketkeeper and slip cordon are standing noticeably closer during this innings. Plenty of edges during England's first innings dropped well short of Fleming at slip, they have learnt their lesson.
Over 23 - Vettori 0-0-0-0-0-0 33-4 - There is a slip, silly point and short-leg in place for Vettori's first over, which is bowled from round the wicket. Maiden.
Over 22 - Oram 0-0-0-0-0-0 33-4 - Oram starts with a maiden. Just in case you were wondering, there is no prospect of the weather coming to England's rescue - blue skies and fluffy white clouds all around in Hamilton. The skipper is coming on...
Over 21 - Mills 0-0-1-0nb-0-0-0 33-4 - England have 67 overs left to reach safety, survival is the order of the day now. Jacob Oram is coming into the attack to deliver some medium pace.
Over 20 - Martin 0-0-0-0-0-1 31-4 - Bell gets off the mark with a pull to square-leg for a single. The pitch has had nothing to do with England's top order collapse, it remains as flat as ever.
Over 19 - Mills 0-0-W-0-0-0 30-4 - Wicket! Kyle Mills - take a bow son. Pietersen joins the English procession, given out lbw by umpire Davis after offering no stroke at an inswinger. Hawkeye shows it was just going to clip off-stump, a fair enough decision, even though batsmen usually get away with those.
Over 18 - Martin 4-0-1-0-0-0 30-3 - Pietersen, who has been unusually tentative with his footwork, gets a thick outside edge down to the third-man boundary. I think England will see how it goes with this partnership but, should another wicket fall quickly, it will be time to batten down the hatches and forget about winning the match.
Over 17 - Mills 0-0-W-0-0-0 25-3 - Wicket! Strauss hangs the bat at a delivery angled across him and edges behind where McCullum moves to his left and takes the catch in the fingertips of his gloves. He was a bit lucky it stayed in. Time to shut up shop for England?
Over 16 - Martin 0-0-0-0-0-0 25-2 - Good hostility from Martin, extracting some bounce out of a docile surface to hit Pietersen on the gloves. It falls safely on the off-side and Pietersen is clearly rattled, swishing at fresh air outside off-stump later in the over.
Over 15 - Mills 0-W-0-1-0-0 25-2 - Wicket! Vaughan tries to work an inswinger into the leg-side, he misses and is trapped bang in front. Umpire Steve Davis raises the finger and in the process provides a lesson to all youngsters out there - gambling is for mugs (see over 13 for explanation). Pietersen walks out and - in the words of M People - it's time for someone in the England batting line-up to search for the hero inside themselves.
Over 14 - Martin 0-1-0-0-0-1 24-1 - Vaughan plays and misses outside off-stump, it was too close to his body for the attempted cut.
Over 13 - Mills 0-0-0-0-0-1 22-1 - Strauss turns a single into the leg-side to get off the mark and retain the strike. I've had a small wager on Vaughan to be England's top second-innings run scorer at odds of 9/5. Hopefully haven't jinxed the great man.
Over 12 - Martin 0-2-0-0-0-0 21-1 - Vaughan clips to midwicket for a couple. England's required rate is currently 4.34, I think that is a bit of a stretch on this pitch. Once the shine wears off the new ball scoring quickly will be difficult.
Over 11 - Mills 1-0-W-0-0-0 19-1 - Wicket! Cook flirts with the ball outside off-stump and gets a thin outside edge through to Brendon McCullum, it had been on the cards. Andrew Strauss leaves his first three deliveries - all full and outside off-stump - well alone.
Over 10 - Martin 0-4-0-0-0-1 18-0 - There is plenty happening with the new ball. Vaughan edges his second delivery faced over the slips after attempting to pull a delivery that was not short enough for the shot. England's openers have come out with good intent, they definitely fancy this run chase.
Over 9 - Mills 0-0-0-4-0-0 13-0 - Mills gets the new ball swinging, but his line is wrong and Cook takes advantage with a tickle down to fine-leg for his third boundary.
Over 8 - Martin 0-4-4-0-0-1 9-0 - Cook gets England off to a flyer, although it's not convincing as he twice runs the ball through the packed slip cordon to the third-man boundary. The Essex left-hander almost plays on off an inside edge from the final delivery, pacy start from Martin.
INNINGS BREAK It all comes down to this - England will chase a victory target of 300 to win the Test. New Zealand have 81 overs to get the 10 wickets they require for victory. Where's your money? Mine is still on the draw, but I think England are the more likely winners if there is a positive outcome. Michael Vaughan and Alastair Cook are walking out the middle, here we go...
Over 7 - Panesar 0-0-1-0-0-0 177-9 dec - Martin blocks out the final three balls to avoid a king pair. Vettori has seen enough and declares at the end of the over.
Over 6 - Sidebottom 0-0-4-W-0-3 176-9 - Wicket! With the field up, Vettori attempts to go aerial over the off-side but doesn't get much on it and a simple catch loops up to Alastair Cook in the covers. The Essex batsman now has six catches in this match. Martin, 'the world's worst batsman' (Michael Atherton's words), strolls out with willow in hand on a king pair after his first-ball duck in the first innings. 'Start the roller,' chirps Ian Botham. Patel retains the strike for the moment by driving into the covers for three.
Over 5 - Panesar 2-0-1-0-1-1 169-8 - Out friends at Skybet currently make the draw heavy favourite at 2/7. An England victory is priced at 13/2, with New Zealand at 4/1.
Over 4 - Sidebottom 0-0-0-4-0-1lb 164-8 - Vettori cuts late to the third-man boundary, he likes it there. Unbelievable, England once again fail to appeal for lbw against Vettori when it looked decidedly close. Hawkeye suggests it was out - England should remember that 'shy boys get nowt' in Test cricket. Where's Matt Prior when you need him?
Over 3 - Panesar 0-4-4-1-0-0 159-8 - Vettori shows his intent with successive slog sweeps to the midwicket boundary. Time is a precious commodity for New Zealand, who will need as much of it as possible to get the 10 wickets they require for victory.
Over 2 - Sidebottom 0-0-0-1-0-0 150-8 - No surprise as Sidebottom, the hat-trick hero of yesterday, starts from the other end. Kevin Pietersen was interviewed prior to the start of play and was in very subdued mood, he seemed to suggest that the England camp are not altogether thrilled at the prospect of a fifth day run chase and that a draw remains the priority. Perhaps he was just giving it a straight bat for the cameras, like he did when he described his knock in the first innings as one of his best - good one KP.
Over 1 - Panesar 0-0-0-2-0-0 149-8 - Panesar takes the first over of the day with slip, silly point and short-leg in place. Jeetan Patel clips out to midwicket for a couple for New Zealand's first runs of the morning. The tourists only have Chris Martin still to come and he really can't bat at all - he makes Danny (the duck) Morrison look like Bradman.
PITCH REPORT It's groundhog day for Ian Botham looking at the pitch. The deck at Seddon Park remains slow and flat as it has throughout the Test. Botham does not expect much to change on day five, certainly there are no signs of it becoming a minefield. More good news for England.
WEATHER WATCH For the fifth consecutive day there are no problems with the weather in Hamilton, the sun is out and we are set fair for a full day of cricket. And what a day it could be, if England pull off a win then Ryan Sidebottom should be knighted, with perhaps an OBE for Monty Panesar. England will fancy chasing anything under 300, more than that and we are getting into the realms of fantasy on a fifth day pitch. Sky Sports commentator David Lloyd has put his cards on the table early by saying he fancies an England victory. Your e-mails are always welcome throughout the day, use the FEEDBACK icon to send in any thoughts you may have on the game or life in general.
WELCOME to over-by-over commentary on the fifth day of the first Test between New Zealand and England at Seddon Park, Hamilton. The hosts will resume at 147-8, leading by 269, when play gets under way at 2130h (GMT). Join us then.
