India v Australia Test Series 2013
M.A. Chidambaram Stadium
India win by 8 wickets India have won the first test of this 4 test series by 8 wickets. India's first innings performance was remarkable and set up the test in their favour. Ashwin and Jadeja bowled very well in both innings, Ashwin getting 12 wickets in the match. Positives for Australia were the attacking bowling of Pattinson, good knocks from Clarke and Warner in the first innings and Henriques in both innings.
Over 12 Lyon 0-0-1 Lyon beats the outside edge of Pujara's bat, a good straighter one from Lyon. The last run comes from an edge that bounces over first slip. India win the test in Chennai by 8 wickets and take a 1-0 lead in the series.
Over 11 Siddle 0-0-0-0-0-0 Siddle to bowl, Sachin on strike and one run to win at Chepauk. All the fielders are in the circle to stop the single, Tendulkar taking his time after hitting two sixes. A maiden from Siddle, brings Pujara on strike.
Over 10 Lyon 0-W-6-6-0-1 Lyon to Sehwag and gone! WICKET! a low catch for first slip and Clarke takes it very well. Sehwag just pushed at it creating the edge. Lyon gets his first of the innings. Sachin walks out and is greeted with a huge roar which keeps on going. First ball, six, just picks it up early and hits it over the ropes. Second ball, six, similar shot, similar area and the crowd erupts for the third time. He takes a single off the last ball to keep strike and level the scores.
Over 9 Siddle 0-0-0-0-0-0 A good maiden from over, straight at the batsmen and Pujara does well to block it.
Over 8 Lyon 0-2-0-0-1-0 Solid defense from Pujara, then charges down the ground and squeezes it through the off side for a couple of runs. A predetermined walk down the pitch from Pujara, Lyon pitches it on the leg stump and Pujara has to dance awkwardly to block it.
Over 7 Siddle 0-0-4-0-0-0 Siddle is brought into the attack. Good straight drive from Sehwag, it was over pitched and Sehwag puts it away in style for four. Just the four from the over, India need 17 runs.
Over 6 Lyon 0-0-0-0-2-0 Lyon bowling much better in this innings, good flight and direction from him. Pujara comes down the wicket, gets to the pitch of the ball and drives it beautifully through the covers for a couple.
Over 5 Pattinson 2-0-0-4-0-2 Sehwag gets on top of this nicely, straight bat shot from Sehwag for a couple. Sehwag slashes hard at that one, and it flies over the slips for a four, no footwork just excellent hand-eye co-ordination. Sehwag drives through the cover, does not time it too well, gets a couple for it.
Over 4 Lyon 0-1-2-0-0-0 Pujara gets off the mark with a couple of runs in the third man region. A good over from Lyon.
Over 3 Pattinson 0-0-0-4-1-W Pattinson continues. That was a thick edge and it flies between slips and gully for four, Sehwag living dangerously as he does. WICKET! A good catch by Henriques at mid on Pattinson takes another wicket. Vijay goes for 6.
Over 2 Lyon 1-0-0-0-6-0 Lyon comes into the attack, Sehwag works him away for a single. Vijay comes down the ground and hits Lyon straight down the ground for a six. Seven from the over.
Over 1 Pattinson 4-0-0-0-0-0 Pattinson makes his intentions clear with a fast bouncer to start, Vijay ducks and the keeper misses it as is goes for four. After the first over, India are 4 for no loss.
Over 93 Jadeja 0-0-0-0-0-W Finally a wicket for India. WICKET! Jadeja bowls a straighter one and a simple bat-and-pad catch. Moises stranded at the other end for 81 as Lyon is the man out. The Aussies are 241 all out with a lead of 49 runs. India need exactly 50 runs to win.
Over 92 Ashwin 0-0-0-2-1-1 Ashwin continues, Moises playing a calm and composed innings here. Four off the over, the lead moves on to 48.
Over 91 Jadeja 0-1-0-0-0-0 Jadeja bowls another probing over, but Lyon survives. Just a single from it, the lead now 45 runs.
Over 90 Ashwin 0-0-0-0-0-0 Two maidens in a row, Ashwin bowling well and Indians searching for their final wicket.
Over 89 Jadeja 0-0-0-0-0-0 A maiden from Jadeja, his second of the morning.
Over 88 Ashwin 0-0-1-0-0-0 Ashwin continues, as the Aussies survive another over, Lyon showing some fight.
Over 87 Jadeja 0-1-0-0-2-0 Moises cuts to the vacant point region for a single. Lyon angles the ball from his pad into the leg side for a couple, as Ishant Sharma trotts to gather it
Over 86 Ashwin 0-0-0-0-0-0 Ashwin from the other end. Lyon survives another maiden from the Indians.
Over 85 Jadeja 0-0-0-0-0-0 Jadeja will start the day for India with Henriques on strike, as the Aussies look to extend the 40 run lead. Moises inside edges on that is very close to the stumps as Dhoni collects it. The single is denied off the last ball, so it is a maiden, Lyon will take strike.
Day Five Hello and welcome to the fifth and final day of the first test between India and Australia from Chennai. India on the verge of a victory, but will Australia have some surprises in the bag. Australia lead by 40 runs, India will be looking to get the last wicket cheaply and chase down the target quickly.
Over 84 - Sharma 0-0-1-0-0-0 232-9 - Sharma returns. Henriques takes the single on the third ball and leaves his partner to face a bouncer. The last ball is short and wide and ignored by Lyon, and Australia have survived the day. The lead is no more than 40, and India are still favourites for an easy victory, but a brave innings from Moises Henriques, unbeaten on 75, coupled with some resistance from Lyon, has ensured that the match will go into its final day. Apart from four overs from Sharma, the spinners have bowled from the start with Ashwin taking a second five wicket haul to end the day with 12 wickets to his name.
Over 83 - Jadeja 0-0-0-0-0-2 231-9 - Jadeja has the chance of a full over at Lyon, but the batsman sees it off, even scoring a couple as he flicks off his toes on the final ball.
Over 82 - Ashwin 0-2-0-0-0-6 229-9 - Ashwin continues. Henriques ends the over with a slog sweep over the mid wicket boundary that brings up the 50 partnership with Lyon as a silent partner.
Over 81 - Jadeja 0-0-4-1-0-0 221-9 - Jadeja will continue despite the new ball being taken. When he drops one short, he sees it going to the boundary quicker than the old one.
Over 80 - Ashwin 0-4-1-0-0-0 216-9 - Ashwin back on, and finds Henriques defending with the deadest of bats. He doesn't miss out to a short ball, scoring four thanks to a midfield on the boundary by Harbhajan who nevertheless made a good effort. Two good appeals to end the over, perhaps outside the line in the first case and missing leg in the second.
Over 79 - Jadeja 0-0-0-2-1-0 211-9 - Jadeja is back, attacking off stump. Henriques is still able to find the gaps. Lyon is beaten by the last ball, but the tail is still wagging.
Over 78 - Sharma 0-0-0-0-0-1 208-9 - Sharma bowls a tidy over at no great pace. Henriques pushes the last ball to gully and they steal a single so that he keeps the strike.
Over 77 - Harbhajan 6-0-1-0-0-0 207-9 - Harbhajan is smashed back over his head, and the six gives Henriques his second fifty. Not bad on debut!
Over 76 - Sharma 0-0-0-0-0-0 200-9 - Sharma comes into the attack, the first over of seam in this innings. It is a very tired over, as if he has been bowling all afternoon, and Lyon is untroubled.
Over 75 - Harbhajan 0-0-0-0-0-0 200-9 - Harbhajan is slapped to deep cover but Henriques wants to keep the strike. He cannot get the last ball away and Lyon will be tested by seam as Ishant Sharma will get an over at last.
Over 74 - Jadeja 4-0-0-0-1-0 200-9 - Jadeja pitches short and Henriques cuts it away for four, that would have been a more satisfying way of avoiding an innings defeat. A leading edge to 3rd man brings up the 200.
Over 73 - Harbhajan 0-0-0-1-0-4b 195-9 - Harbhajan almost does the trick as Henriques tries the sweep. It hit the forearm and not go to hand anyway. The next ball hits the pads, but was going down leg and there is no real appeal. Henriques works one to mid wicket, and the lead is halved to a single run. Australia move into the lead as one pitches in the footmarks and the keeper has no price on stopping it.
Over 72 - Jadeja 0-0-0-1-0-0 190-9 - Jadeja trundles away, with a single to Henriques reducing the deficit to 2.
Over 71 - Harbhajan 0-0-2-0-0-0 189-9 - Harbhajan bowls the doosra, but it was to wide to tempt th batsman. A mistimed drive drops short of the man at mid off, and a bit of a misfield. The next ball hits the pads, but was going down leg clearly.
Over 70 - Jadeja 0-0-0-0-0-4 187-9 - Jadeja returns. Henriques is now looking to farm the strike, but the last ball almost ends at as his lofted on drive just clears the fielder.
Over 69 - Harbhajan 0-0-0-0-0-4 183-9 - Harbhajan returns to hunt the last wicket. Lyon is certainly a competent batsman, and is less prone to rushes of blood than Starc. He plays a nice off drive, well timed past the bowler, as Australia edge closer towards avoiding an innings defeat.
Over 68 - Ashwin 0-0-4-0-0-0 179-9 - Ashwin has already bagged 12 wickets in this match, but Hendriques is still there and plays a neat shot to 3rd man for his second boundary. He has been there for some time but still looks vulnerable every time he goes onto the back foot.
Over 67 - Jadeja 0-0-0-0-0-0 175-9 - Jadeja will have to wait a bit longer to celebrate a famous victory as Lyon keeps him out.
Over 66 - Ashwin 0-4-0-1-W-0 175-9 - Ashwin drops one short, and Henriques smacks it through mid wicket for his first boundary. He then has to contend with one that keeps low. NINE WICKETS DOWN as Starc looks to go over mid-wicket again, but it loops up and Tendulkar comes in from a deep mid on position, sliding in underneath it. Lyon is the last man in after the drinks break. Ashwin can't believe he hasn't ended it as the last ball of the over stays low and hits him in front of middle, but umpire Erasmus decides - and the replay suggests correctly so - that it was missing leg.
Over 65 - Jadeja 0-0-0-0-1-0 170-8 - Jadeja might be bowling for run outs, as there seem to be some communication problems out there. They survive another over though.
Over 64 - Ashwin W-0-0-4-0-4 169-8 - Ashwin claims another as Pattinson tries to force off the back foot, but it is a good low CATCH by Sehwag at slip, his third catch of the innings. Mitchell Starc is the new batsman but is not tempted by a juicy tossed up delivery outside off. The third ball he faces, however, will be swung away to deep mid wicket. He ends the over with a straight bat, but again it goes through mid wicket for a much needed boundary.
Over 63 -Jadeja 0-3-1-0-0-2 161-7 - Jadeja returns. He is punched off the back foot by Henriques, who is impressing with his ability to play late.
Over 62 - Ashwin 0-0-1-0-0-0 155-7 - Ashwin has a big shout for lbw, but there was a big inside edge. He is troubling Pattinson, beating the outside edge with the last ball of the over.
Over 61 - Harbhajan 0-0-1-0-0-0 154-7 - Harbhajan is finding the right areas and Henriques can only score by defending into a gap in the covers. Harbhajan has an lbw appeal, but perhaps it pitched outside leg. Pattinson has to scamper back after being sent back by his partner but no damage is done.
Over 60 - Ashwin 0-2-1-0-0-0 153-7 - Ashwin continues to probe away. Henriques continues to play with some nice touches but Pattinson is battling.
Over 59 - Harbhajan 1-0-0-0-0-0 150-7 - Harbhajan pushed away for the single that brings up the 150. He has a stifled lbw appeal against Pattinson but it was easily missing leg. Pattinson turns the last one off the pads but it just does not carry to leg slip.
Over 58 - Ashwin 0-0-1-4-0-2 149-7 - Ashwin returns as Dhoni continues to deny the batsmen the chance to settle against any particular bowler. Pattinson smacks a low full toss past mid on, and later pushes a carrom ball through the covers.
Over 57 - Harbhajan 0-3-1-0-0-0 142-7 - Harbhajan finds the outside edge as Pattinson drives, and again the crowd cheers wildly as Tendulkar stretches those old legs to save the boundary.
Over 56 - Jadeja 0-1-0-W-0-1 138-7 - Jadeja didn't have to wait too long for that as Siddle eventually tires of the blocking and goes for the swipe through mid wicket, but is BOWLED MIDDLE STUMP. Seven down now, and the end is surely nigh. James Pattinson is the new batsman.
Over 55 - Harbhajan 0-0-0-1-0-0 136-6 - Harbhajan continues to be the danger man, finding the inside edge as Siddle gropes forward.
Over 54 - Jadeja 0-0-0-0-0-2 135-6 - Jadeja is back with plenty of men crouched around the bat. Siddle looks competent enough before getting off the mark with a thick edge.
Over 53 - Harbhajan 1-1lb-0-0-0-0 133-6 - Harbhajan has a shout as Kohli takes a nice catch down the leg side, but it was only the pad of henriques involved there.
Over 52 - Ashwin 0-0-0-0-0-0 131-6 - Ashwin hits Siddle in the ribs with one that rears up on the batsman, and even feels happy enough to experiment with a leg break.
Over 51 - Harbhajan 0-0-0-0-0-0 131-6 - Harbhajan picks up the attack from the other end after tea. He finds the pads of Henriques with the first ball, but it was going down leg, and the Australia sees out the over without further difficulty.
Over 50 - Ashwin 2-1-W-0-0-0 131-6 - Ashwin continues after tea as Australia's trial by spin shows no sign of ending, but Henriques picks the carrom ball first up and gets it away to square leg. Clarke is OUT to his first ball after tea, LBW. He went to pull a short ball, but it spun and more importantly did not bounce, and hit him right back on his stumps. Siddle is the NEW BATSMAN.
So Australia reach the sanctuary of the tea table still in a desperate position. The Indian spinners have really taken charge, taking four more wickets in the session to leave themselves still with a lead of 64 and just five wickets remaining. Clarke is still there for Australia, but will need plenty of support if India are even to be forced to bat again.
Over 49 - Jadeja 1-0-0-0-3-0 128-5 - Jadeja is pushed away for a single by Clarke from the first ball, and of course the skipper needs to chat to his partner mid-pitch - perhaps debating the merits of a good vindaloo or maybe a butter chicken for supper tonight. Could be the last over before tea, and a gentle bit of time-wasting will not go amiss as the Indians have really rattled through the overs today. Henriques plays through mid wicket for three, and Clarke blocks out the last ball. That will be tea.
Over 48 - Ashwin 0-0-0-0-0-0 124-5 - Ashwin varies his pace nicely. Henriques, on Test debut, does not face quality spin bowling like this every day of his life, and is glad to see out another over.
Over 47 - Jadeja 1-0-0-0-0-0 124-5 - Jadeja returns and almost scores a direct hit as the batsmen take a risky single off his first ball. He mixes up his pace for the rest of the over and Clarke is happy to keep him out.
Over 46 - Ashwin 0-1-0-0-1-0 123-5 - Ashwin lures Clarke out of his crease, not that too much encouragement is needed for that, and the skipper plays it down to deep midwicket. Henriques pushes down the ground to get off the mark. Clarke picks the carrom ball to play out the over.
Over 45 - Harbhajan 0-0-3b-0-W-0 121-5 - Harbhajan is finding uneven bounce. Clarke leaves one which keeps low and Dhoni cannot stop it. He joked with short leg Pujara earlier about using the helmet to block off the byes, might do something about that soon. Wade runs out of patience and aims a massive sweep at Harbhajan, and is BOWLED. That leaves Australia still 51 behind, and now just 5 WICKETS IN HAND. Moises Henriques is the NEW BATSMAN.
Over 44 - Ashwin 0-0-0-0-0-0 118-4 - Ashwin returns after a brief rest. Still no sign of a seam bowler in this innings. Wade plays attacking shots to the first and last ball, but the middle four are all defended.
Over 43 - Harbhajan 1-1-1-4-1-0 118-4 - Harbhajan takes some tap in this over. Some clever placing allows the batsmen to run four singles, while Wade got hold of a sweep to reach the boundary.
Over 42 - Jadeja 4b-0-0-0-0-0 110-4 - Jadeja beats the keeper with his first ball, the skipper will not enjoy that. Wade gets hold of the second with the slog sweep and hits Pujara on the helmet. Jadeja continues to get some steep bounce. He has a muted lbw shout as Wade pads one away but it was well outside off stump.
Over 41 - Harbhajan 1-0-0-0-0-0 106-4 - Harbhajan hits Clarke on the glove, but the skipper is using his feet well to counter the spin.
Over 40 - Jadeja 0-0-3-0-0-1 105-4 - Jadeja is cut late by Clarke, who now has a lot of responsibility on his shoulders. Wade is beaten trying to sweep the first ball he faces from Jadeja. Dust flies as he digs out a yorker on the last ball.
Over 39 - Harbhajan 0-0-0-0-W-0 101-4 - Harbhajan returns with a half volley, but Warner can't find the gap. He survives an lbw appeal to one that is not turning enough, but the veteran will not be denied forever. The fifth ball gets past the inside edge, and this time umpire Dharmasena says THAT IS OUT, Warner gone and Australia are now four down while still trailing by 71. Wade is the new batsman.
Over 38 - Jadeja 4-0-0-0-4-0 101-3 - Jadeja starts the over with a half volley, and Clarke is only too happy to take full toll on that. Jadeja has another huge appeal for lbw but again it was just not doing enough. Clarke puts one away through mid wicket to celebrate and brings up the 100.
Over 37 - Ashwin 0-0-4-0-0-4 93-3 - Ashwin has an over of mixed fortune. Warner put two away through mid wicket with slog sweeps, but almost gave the bowler a return catch.
Over 36 - Jadeja 0-0-0-0-4-0 85-3 - Jadeja has a big shout for lbw against Clarke turned down. It did not seem to be straightening enough according to umpire Erasmus, and the replay. Clarke celebrates by coming down the track and hitting a glorious drive over mid wicket.
Over 35 - Ashwin 0-0-2-0-0-0 81-3 - Ashwin keeps Warner bottled up in that over, just letting one slip slightly which Warner works to deep mid wicket.
Over 34 - Jadeja 1-0-0-0-0-0 79-3 - Jadeja tempts Warner into the lofted sweep, and it almost carries to the fielder at long leg. He keeps flighting it up to Clarke and beats him once.
Over 33 - Ashwin 0-2-6-4-0-0 78-3 - Ashwin is worked through square leg as Clarke gets off the mark. Clarke has decided that staying in the crease is not the way to go, coming down the track to smash Ashwin over long on and then waits in the crease to punish the next ball as Ashwin drops it shorter.
Over 32 - Jadeja 0-0-0-0-0-0 66-3 - Jadeja induces an edge onto Warner's pad, but it lands safely. He has the luxury of leaving the last as drinks are called onto the field.
Over 31 - Ashwin 0-0-0-1-0-0 66-3 - Ashwin misfields off his own bowling to gift Warner a single. He tests Clarke with a carrom ball.
Over 30 - Jadeja 0-1-0-0-wkt-0 65-3 - Jadeja has the new batsman Hughes in lots of trouble. There is an appeal for a catch at leg slip, but it hit him on the shoulder although it might have brushed the glove on the way. No matter for India, Hughes is OUT FOR A DUCK next ball as he attempts the avoid the ball after considering the cut but gloves an easy catch to Sehwag at slip. Clarke is the NEW BATSMAN.
Over 29 - Ashwin 2-0-0-1-1-Wkt 64-2 - Ashwin induces a mis-timed shot, but the cheers are for Tendulkar as he chases it to the boundary. The next ball beats the bat. Both batsmen also know how to place the ball into a gap. Cowan is OUT to the last ball as Dharmasena raises the finger. It turned into the left-hander and hit him in front of the off stump, he stalks off the field in an obvious fit of pique - perhaps he felt that it given for the catch.
Over 28 - Jadeja 0-1-1-1-1-0 60-1 - Jadeja is taken for a few singles as the Australians look to keep the board moving along.
Over 27- Ashwin 0-0-0-0-0-1 56-1 - Ashwin back on to replace Harbhajan as Dhoni continues to shuffle his spinners. Warner is hit on the glove by one that bounces, and is beaten by the next one as it spins away from his outside edge. The last ball is overpitched and worked away for a single.
Over 26 - Jadeja 1-0-0-0-0-0 55-1 - Jadeja prompts some ungainly movements from Cowan as he pads up outside off, but still getting the bat in the way when he needs to defend.
Over 25 - Harbhajan 0-0-0-0-1-1 54-1 - Harbhajan continues. Cowan has to get back in his ground smartly as the throw comes in from square leg and Dhoni backhands it onto the stumps. Cowan is now taking to move in front of off stump to counter the spin from over the wicket. There is another second close call as Warner plays to mid wicket and sets off for the run. Dhoni gets after it, but his throw is wide with Cowan desperately reaching for the crease.
Over 24 - Jadeja 2-0-1-2-2-0 52-1 - Jadeja back into the attack and is nudged past backward point. Warner eventually gets off the mark with an unconvincing push which also raises the 50. The next ball gets vicious turn and bounce, but Warner somehow works it to fine leg.
Over 23 - Harbhajan 0-0-4-0-0-1 45-1 - Harbhajan has a huge shout for a bat/pad catch off the first ball as it goes near the glove but hits his shoulder. That bounced a lot, and umpire Dharmasena made the correct call. Cowan has the chance to sweep, and times it beautifully.
Over 22 - Ashwin 0-0-0-0-1lb-0 40-1 - Ashwin had one optimistic shout for lbw, but has to settle for a maiden over, his first of the innings.
Over 21 - Harbhajan 0-0-0-0-1-0 39-1 - Harbhajan has Vijay in position right under the batsman's nose at sill point, and he almost pulled off a reflex catch. in fact, he got the shin to the ball (suitably protected, no doubt) but could not keep it in the air.
Over 20 - Ashwin 0-0-0-1-0-0 38-1 - Ashwin also keeping at around off stump. Warner seems to be growing in confidence now, pushing the last ball firmly back to the bowler as both batsmen now seem to be preferring to play off the front foot.
Over 19 - Harbhajan 1-0-0-0-0-0 37-1 - Harbhajan bowling a tight line. Cowan has taken a leaf out of Watson's book, taking an early single and watching his partner struggle against the turning ball for the rest of the over.
Over 18 - Ashwin 1-0-0-0-0-0 36-1 - Ashwin had a shout for lbw, but Warner got some bat on it.
Over 17 - Harbhajan 0-0-0-0-1-0 35-1 - Harbhajan returns to the attack after lunch, with David Warner in after recovering from a bout of gastro. A quick single to the covers gets the board ticking over.
India are well on top at lunch. They stretched their lead to 172 this morning, Dhoni eventually going for 224 and Kumar contributing 38. Pattinson took five wickets. With Warner ill, Cowan and Watson got them off to a good start despite some turn from Ashwin and Harbhajan. India relied solely on spin for the remainder of the session, and their persistence paid off when Watson edged the last ball of the session to slip.
Over 16 - Ashwin 0-0-0-0-4-Wkt 34-1 - Ashwin returns with a change of ends. Watson comes down the track and gets to the pitch of the ball, driving it over mid off despite lunch being around the corner. He defends the last ball positively, but is OUT as it comes off the shoulder of the bat and is CAUGHT by Sehwag at slip.
Over 15 - Jadeja 0-0-0-0-2-0 30-0 - Jadeja hits the pads as Cowan attempts a sweep, but it was well outside off stump. Another attempted sweep hits the gloves but lands in open space.
Over 14 - Harbhajan 0-0-4b-6-0-0 28-0 - Harbhajan spins one from middle stump and beats the keeper - not exactly what he had in mind. He follows it up with a short ball, and Watson is merciless with such a gift.
Over 13 - Jadeja 0-0-0-0-0-0 18-0 - Jadeja goes over the wicket to Cowan. He bats his man with a quicker ball.
Over 12 - Harbhajan 1-0-0-0-0-0 18-0 - Harbhajan is now finding turn and bounce from over the wicket as well.
Over 11 - Jadeja 0-0-0-0-0-0 17-0 - Jadeja comes into the attack with a maiden. He got one or two to turn past the right-hander's outside edge.
Over 10 - Harbhajan 0-0-1-0-0-0 17-0 - Harbhajan strengthens the close-catching posse for Watson, but is worked to deep mid wicket quite easily.
Over 9 - Ashwin 0-0-0-0-0-4 16-0 - Ashwin has Cowan in two minds. He is not looking comfortable defending off the back foot as the bounce is variable. Ashwin ruins his over with a full toss on the last ball, which Cowan gratefully tugs through mid wicket.
Over 8 - Harbhajan 0-0-0-0-0-0 12-0 - Harbhajan bowls a maiden over to Watson, not the most testing of overs. Watson is looking to score and rotate the strike, but there was nothing on offer there.
Over 7 - Ashwin 1-0-0-0-0-0 12-0 - Ashwin almost had his man there as Cowan jabs it wide of short leg. Ashwin has the most half-hearted of appeals as Cowan pads up to the last ball of the over.
Over 6 - Harbhajan 0-0-0-1-0-4 11-0 - Harbhajan looks less threatening from over the wicket. Cowan ends the over with a sweep, not out of the middle of the bat though, which brings up the first boundary of the innings.
Over 5 - Ashwin 1-1-1-0-0-0 6-0 - Ashwin produces another good one to end the over, looking more dangerous bowling round the wicket into the rough.
Over 4 - Harbhajan 1-0-0-0-0-0 3-0 - Harbhajan bowls outside off and Cowan can leave a few. The one arm ball does force him to play, and Cowan looks less than convincing in his defence.
Over 3 - Ashwin 0-1-0-0-0-0 2-0 - Ashwin has a huge appeal for lbw but umpire Dharmasena says no. Delivered from around the wicket to the left-hander, it straightened but looked to be just outside the line, and might have spun away past off stump. Not out this time, but the Indian spinners are both looking likely to take a wicket with any ball.
Over 2 - Harbhajan 0-0-0-0-0-0 1-0 - Harbhajan Singh is on at the other end to complete an all-spin new ball attack. The Turbanator is turning it square, looking to bowl into the rough outside the left-hander's off stump. The last ball spins so much that it beats the outside edge and goes to slip.
Over 1 - Ashwin 1-0-0-0-0-0 1-0 - Ashwin bowls with the new ball. Ed Cowan has come out to open the innings with Shane Watson, as David Warner is ill. Cowan is almost undone by some sharp turn from the first ball, while Watson gets an inside edge onto the pad but it falls clear of a clutch of close fielders. Things could get tough for the Australians if this first over is anything to go by, and they trail by 171.
Over 155 - Siddle 0-1-Wkt 572 all out - Siddle sees Sharma run on a misfield, contrary to the old adage, but Maxwell is off target. Perhaps Sharma should have kept the strike rather, as Kumar is undone by a slower ball and is CAUGHT at mid off by Clarke. Australia can get off the field at last, but face a massive deficit of 172 in a situation where even the ever-positive Australians know that only India can win.
Over 154 - Lyon 1-0-0-1-1-1 571-9 - Lyon is worked through mid wicket off the first ball, and Kumar is happy to give Sharma the strike. His partner gets a thick inside edge to the next ball. Another inside edge gives Sharma a rare single. Yet another inside edge will allow Sharma to keep the strike.
Over 153 - Siddle 0-2-0-0-1-0 567-9 - Siddle is struck solidly wide of 3rd man as Kumar continues to impress, but then almost plays on, the ball coming to rest between his feet. Wade scores a direct hit as they scamper a single to gully, but Sharma was well in.
Over 152 - Lyon 4-1-0-0-0-0 564-9 - Lyon might be forgiven for thinking Dhoni is still at the crease as Kumar plays a magnificent cover drive.
Over 151 - Siddle 0-0-0-1-0-0 559-9 - Siddle is on for the first bowling change of the day. Kumar has the luxury of leaving some deliveries outside off stump. He has Sharma fending off some shorter balls.
Over 150 - Lyon 0-0-1-1-0-1 558-9 - Lyon finds some variable bounce, and very nearly gets through the back foot defence of Sharma. There was a puff of dust as that ball went through the surface.
Over 149 - Pattinson wd-0-0-0-0-1-4b 555-9 - Pattinson bowls a half-tracker which is called wide, and that brings up the 550. Dhoni's score of 224 is the third highest by a Test wicket-keeper. Kumar is now turning down the easy singles in order to farm the strike, but almost chops one onto his stumps. More woes for the keeper as a yorker length delivery beats him for byes.
Over 148 - Lyon 0-0-0-0-2-1 549-9 - Lyon soldiers on. Kumar now takes on the mantle of the senior partner and is starting to unpack his shots.
Over 147 - Pattinson 4-0-Wkt-0-0-0 546-9 - Pattinson bowls a tired delivery outside off and Dhoni smashes it past mid off. Dhoni has in fact hit the ball out of shape, and it will be replaced. A well-directed bouncer earns the WICKET of Dhoni, as he snaps the head back and plays the hook only to glove a catch to the keeper. No let-up for the Australians, though, as Sharma strides to the wicket. Pattinson now has five wickets.
Over 146 - Lyon 0-0-0-1-0-4b 542-8 - Lyon is looking to keep Dhoni quiet. The captain is still looking to protect his partner, but is not shy to come down the track and give it a full go. The last ball slips right through Kumar's guard, but the bounce beats both the stumps and the keeper.
Over 145 - Pattinson 1-0-0-0-0-0 537-8 - Pattinson has five balls at the tail-ender, but Kumar has a very sound technique and hardly looks troubled. Dhoni is the first wicket-keeper/captain to score a Test double century.
Over 144 - Lyon 4-0-1-0-6-1 536-8 - Lyon fires in a quicker delivery only to see the tail-ender play it neatly to the third man boundary. Dhoni continues to use the feet well, and launches one way over the long on boundary.
Over 143 - Pattinson 0-0-0-4b-0-0 524-8 - Pattinson has a good shout for lbw as Dhoni advances to him, but the replay shows it hitting outside the line. Pattinson follows up with a wretched delivery way down leg. Meantime, Dhoni has set a new, if somewhat obscure, record by achieving the highest score by a wicket-keeper against Australia.
Over 142 - Lyon 0-4-0-0-1-0 520-8 - Lyon seems to be up against it again this morning as Dhoni reverse sweeps the second ball to the boundary. The plan is clear - Dhoni will play his shots and farm the strike while Kumar protects his wicket.
