Eng v NZ - 5th ODI commentary

Over 48 Gillespie 1-1-1-0-W 215ao - Distressing news: with England needing 55 off three overs, Jim finally concedes that the fat lady has sung. Quitter. Taylor drops a catch at backward point that should have ended the match. Sitter by his standards. Anderson plays the same shot, and this time it's Oram in at backward point. He makes no mistake, and New Zealand have crushed England here and deservedly take out the series. They have outplayed England since taking a hammering in the first game of the series. At least Murray won.

Over 47 Southee W-0-1-1-0-0wd-0 212-9 WICKET! And that really is it. Shah tries to clear long-off, but can only pick Marshall out. He ends with 199 runs for the series - more than any other batsman on either side. With a bit of assistance today, he might have been able to get England close, but it just never came. Southee, meanwhile, has now got 13 wickets for the series. Superb effort. Jim hasn't given up, though: he's now predicting England to win off the final ball. Got to admire him. Anderson is England's last man, and he gets off the mark with a single. Sidebottom gets an inside edge into the pads for another single. Southee bowls a wide down the legside to take England up to the heights of 212 for nine.

Over 46 Gillespie 1-2-1-0-1-1 209-8 - Gillespie is back into the attack, and Sidebottom gets the ball down the ground for a single. Shah drives through cover for two, and gets a single to midwicket. He really has looked a class above the other England batsmen today, and looks like being the only player in this series to pass 200 runs. Sidebottom gets another run down the ground, and Shah digs out a yorker for a single to keep the strike. Just 58 needed from the last four overs. Walk in the park.

Over 45 Southee 1-4-0-0wd-0-1-0wd-4 203-8 - Shah bunts to deep cover for a single, and Sidebottom somehow gets the ball between two gully fielders and away to the boundary. There are a couple of wides from Southee before Shah plays an astonishing, wristy shot. He gets a very full ball from Southee over cover and away to the boundary. Brilliant batting, but all too late I fear.

Over 44 Mills 1-W-2-1-1-1 191-8 WICKET! Surely even Jim must be resigned to it now, as Broad slogs a low full toss from Mills to deep square-leg where Flynn takes a good catch above his head. Sidebottom is the new batsman, with just 81 needed from the last 40 balls. Shah, on strike because the batsmen crossed, drives to extra cover for a couple and then goes down the ground for another single. Sidebottom defends to cover for a quick single, and Shah gets one more to deep cover to end the over and keep the strike. He will at least come out of this series with reputation intact.

Over 43 Southee 0-2-1-1b-4-1 185-7 - Shah hits down the ground for a couple and then a single to bring up a defiant half-century. England's most badly-treated batsman continues to knock on the door, but his knocks will no doubt be ignored in favour of 'consistent selection'. That'll keep Ambrose in a job as well. McCullum can't gather a ball that spits out of the footmarks and the batsmen scramble a bye to get Shah back on strike. He plays a superb paddle sweep over short fine-leg for four, to Southee's astonishment. He drives the last ball of the over to deep point for a single to keep the strike. Shah might think he's the only person who still thinks England can win, but there's at least one more optimistic fellow out there. Jim Tab says: "We have not lost yet. Are you from New Zealand?" No.

Over 42 Mills 0-4-1-0-0-4 176-7 - Shah is at least providing some entertainment for the crowd, slogging Mills over midwicket and getting four. Rather picked his fielder there as well, as Gillespie lumbered round the boundary in vaguely shambolic fashion before letting the ball through. Shah hits the next ball down the ground for a single, and Broad gets a boundary as well thanks to another poor bit of fielding. It's Southee letting the ball through this time at third-man, and Mills is deeply unimpressed. An over that could have cost three ends up costing nine. It only matters for Mills' figures, though. The game was over long ago.

Over 41 Vettori 0-1-1-0-1-0 167-7 - Vettori ends his superb spell with an over that costs just three singles He finishes with magnificent figures of 10-1-32-3 and will shortly be celebrating a 3-1 series win. And if the umpires had any common sense it would have been 4-1.

Over 40 Mills W-0-0-0-0-0 164-7 WICKET! Swann's entertaining little innings comes to an end. Trying to help the ball to the fine-leg boundary, he succeeds only in gloving the ball through to McCullum who dives goalie style to take the catch. Broad is the new batsman, and he can't get bat on ball with a few lusty drives. I suppose he ought to be trying to get Shah on strike, but it hardly matters now.

Over 39 Vettori 1-4-2wd-0-0-0-1lb 164-6 - New Zealand are unsettled by the sudden injection of purpose from England. Clearly they had no reason to expect it. Shah gets a single from the first ball before Swann rocks back to hit a genuine bad ball from Vettori to the cover boundary. The next one is a wide down the legside which McCullum fails to gather. They scramble an extra, and a wild throw allows them to complete a second run. A leg-bye from the final ball ends another decent over for the home side as they strive desperately for respectability.

Over 38 Mills 1-1-0-1-4-2 155-6 - England scramble the nine required from that over. A few singles are followed by a swat over cover from Swann. The fielder on the fence comes in looking for a catch and lets the ball through for a boundary. Swann fiddles the last ball into the legside and runs hard for two. Unorthodox, but at least Swann is showing some initiative and intent alongside Shah.

Over 37 Vettori 2-2-0-1-1-1 146-6 - Shah - as he should - is just chancing his arm now. He gets a couple of two with sweep shots, and singles from the last three balls make that a pretty expensive over for Vettori.

Over 36 Gillespie 0-1-0-0-0-0 139-6 - Another over slides by. Shah gets a single, but Swann can't get anything more from the over. Nine an over required now, for what it's worth.

Over 35 Vettori 0-0-0-W-0-0 138-6 - WICKET! It's safe to say it's not been Ambrose's day. A wide ball from Vettori is slapped tamely to sub fielder Marshall at backward point. England subsiding to a shocking 3-1 series defeat here against game but limited opposition. Swann is the new batsman for England, and Vettori has him stone dead lbw sweeping at the final ball of the over in the eyes of everyone except Llong. Doesn't like giving them out, does Nigel. Hitting middle halfway up. Still a wicket-maiden for Vettori though.

Over 34 Gillespie 0-1-0-4-2-0 138-5 - Vettori, sensing the chance to put this to bed, brings back his best bowler on the day, Gillespie. But his return prompts a flurry of activity from Shah, who swats a short ball over midwicket for four and then runs hard get back for a second run after guiding the ball to third-man. Seven from the over, but that's still not enough for England.

Over 33 Vettori W-0-0-0-0-1 131-5 WICKET! It was coming. Poor shot from Wright, trying to cut a straight ball from Vettori. Not for the first time, England look utterly clueless when presented with a mid-range run-chase. Rabbits in headlights, and it's hard to see anything but a Kiwi victory here now. Ambrose is the new batsman, and he must be feeling the pressure: no runs in the series, embarrassing dropped catch in the New Zealand innings. Ambrose tries to run himself out before finally getting off the mark with a single from the final ball of the over. England at sixes and sevens.

Over 32 Styris 0-2-1-0wd-1-1-1 130-4 - Shah starting to find the odd gap that allows a scampered two, but these two don't entirely convince between the sticks. A run out looks a fair bet. A wide from Styris is well gathered by McCullum, who whips the bails off but Wright has his back foot back down in time.

Over 31 Vettori 0-1-1-4-1-0 123-4 - England finally enjoy some success against Vettori. Shah rocks back and clips the ball through square-leg. Initially it looks like one, maybe two, but Shah has timed it beautifully and the ball scurries across the square and reaches the fence. At the same stage of their innings, New Zealand were 123-3.

Over 30 Styris 3-0-1-0-1-2lb 116-4 - Both batsmen have nervy moments. Shah drives to Vettori's left at mid-off, and the diving Kiwi skipper can't hold on to a catch he'd have expected to take more often than not. Shah scampers three as the ball runs off towards the boundary. Wright then survives a very close lbw shout. Hit in front of off stump, he's a lucky boy to still be there. A couple of singles and two leg-byes from the final ball mean it's a slightly better over for England, but still the required rate climbs.

Over 29 Vettori 0-0-0-1-0-1 109-4 - Wright's nerves are palpable here. He's desperate to get going but just can't quite do it. Styris and Vettori are rattling through their overs here, and England are stuck at two or three an over.

Over 28 Styris 1-1-0-0-0-2 107-4 - The run graphs cross paths as England slip below the New Zealand curve for the first time in the innings. Shah manages to get two to long-leg from the final ball of the over, but there are still just four runs from the over. Up goes the required rate again.

Over 27 Vettori 0-1-0-0-0-0 103-4 - Shah chips over mid-off for a single, but Wright can't get the ball away. Another over ticks by, and the required rate touches seven.

Over 26 Styris 0-0-1-0-0-0 102-4 - Styris, New Zealand's hero with the bat, is into the attack now with McCullum up to the stumps and under the helmet. Good start as well, just a single from the over. England have to be careful here: while they need to consolidate and have no real weapons left in the shed, the required rate will head skywards very quickly if England block.

Over 25 Vettori 1-0-1-W-0-0 101-4 WICKET! England in deep trouble now as Vettori spins one past Bopara's defences as the Essex man looks to open the face and push a single. Bopara done in the flight, and another England batsman gets in and gets out, and New Zealand are red-hot favourites now. A different challenge now for Wright, who has to play himself in against spin having opened the innings for the first four matches of the series.

Over 24 Southee 4-0-0-1-0-0 99-3 - It's been a little bit all or nothing for Southee today. There have been a fair few boundary balls among the good ones, and here he drops shot to Bopara who rocks back to crunch the ball through the covers. Southee gets back on the spot for the rest of the over, which costs just a single to deep point.

Over 23 Vettori 1-0-0-0-0-0 94-3 - Key period in the game now as Vettori comes into the attack. Swann bowled superbly for England, and Vettori will be looking to do something similar here. He starts well enough, just a single from his first over. There's a big appeal for a catch when Shah tries to sweep, but that seemed to go straight through to McCullum without touching anything. Certainly, umpire Llong wasn't interested.

Over 22 Southee 1-1-1-0-0-2 93-3 - Both Bopara and Shah are looking to work the ball into the legside, but they can't quite find a big enough gap to allow a second run. Shah eventually finds a two from the final ball, but in unconvincing style. It's a thick edge that bounces next to the leg stump and runs down to fine-leg. Lucky.

Over 21 Oram 0wd-0-0-0-0-1-0 88-3 - Oram starts the over with a wide outside Bopara's off stump but soon relocates the radar. Just a single off the rest of that over with England forced into a period of rebuilding by those three wickets.

Over 20 Southee 0-4-1-0-W-0 86-3 - Bopara hits another classy boundary, pulling a short ball from Southee to the square-leg fence. Southee just gets too straight again and is picked off to deep backward-square for a single by Bopara. WICKET! And there's the answer to the Pietersen question. He cuts uppishly at a short ball from Southee and picks out Oram at backward point. Massive wicket for New Zealand, and England are in trouble now. Shah is one place up the order at number five now, with England needing exactly a run a ball for the next 30.1 overs to win. Shah blocks the final ball of the over, so the rate climbs above six an over - albeit fractionally - for the first time.

Over 19 Oram 0-0-0-1-0-0 81-2 - Oram finding that nagging back-of-a-length spot that makes him so hard to get away, and Pietersen has just six runs from 22 balls here. Like McCullum earlier, he just seems to have played himself out of form in this series. Can he regain it in this last innings?

Over 18 Southee 1-0-0-4-1-0 80-2 - Pietersen gets a single and Bopara gets another eye-catching boundary with a beautiful straight drive as Southee looks in vain for some swing. Bopara hasn't always looked entirely convincing in this innings, but he has played some very pleasing strokes.

Over 17 Oram 0-0-1-0-4-0 74-2 - Oram doesn't bowl many bad balls, but Bopara cashes in on one, cutting a short ball hard behind point. Couple of sweet boundaries now for Bopara after a nervy start. The players are having a drink at the end of that over with the game still delicately poised.

Over 16 Southee 0-0-0-0-0-0wd-4 69-2 - No sign from the umpire to indicate the final Powerplay has been taken, but 're assured that it has. Southee pays the price when what should have been the last ball of the over is called wide outside the off stump. The extra ball is a leg-stump half-volley, and Bopara puts it away to the midwicket boundary. Cracking shot, and frustration for the bowler.

Over 15 Oram 1-1-0-0-2-0 64-2 - A couple of singles before Pietersen eases the ball through midwicket for two. England's run rate not a grave concern at this stage, but those two wickets are a problem.

Over 14 Southee 2-W-0-0-0-0 60-2 - Gillespie struck in his last over, but he's out of the attack now. Southee, leading wicket-taker for the series, comes on in his place and is immediately clipped through square-leg for two by Cook. WICKET! But Southee soon has his 11th wicket of the series as Cook gets a thin edge through to McCullum, who takes the catch at ankle height. New Zealand right in the game now after two quick wickets. Bopara is the new batsman, and he plays out his first four deliveries. Good start for Southee, who has been the star man for New Zealand in this series.

Over 13 Oram 2-1-0-2-0-0 58-1 - Cook works the first ball of Oram's second over into the legside for a couple. Good placement from Cook there. He hits the next one back past the bowler for a single that just threatens to get tight because Pietersen initially has to turn back towards his crease because of the straightness of Cook's shot. Safe in the end. Pietersen works to midwicket for what should have been a single, but some slack work from Mills - who seemed to run alongside the ball for a long time - allows a second run.

Over 12 Gillespie W-0-0-0-0-0 53-1 WICKET! New Zealand break through with the first ball of the second Powerplay. Bell wanders across his stumps one time too many, and Gillespie has a deserved wicket. Bell will say he was forward, but was hit in front of off and the ball would certainly have gone on to hit middle. Bell ends the series in trademark style: getting a nice start, looking fluent, and then getting out. Captain Pietersen is the new batsman, and he's greeted with a fiery short ball that flies past the grille as Pietersen drops his hands. Gillespie beats Pietersen with another ball that jags away off the deck. Again, it flies through to McCullum. Brilliant over from Gillespie, and his spell here has kept New Zealand in the hunt here because runs have flowed at the other end.

Over 11 Oram 0-0-1lb-1-4-0 53-0 - No surprise to see Mills removed from the attack, but perhaps a bit of an eyebrow-raiser to see Oram rather than Southee given the ball. ook survives a close lbw shout - would definitely have hit middle but pitched outside leg - and scurries through for a leg-bye. Bell gets a single to point before Cook clips the ball effortlessly behind square-leg for four. Excellent placement from Cook, and England's highest opening partnership of the series.

Over 10 Gillespie 0-0-0-1-0-2 47-0 - While Mills has leaked runs at an alarming rate for New Zealand, Gillespie has started well. After three dot balls, Cook gets a leading edge into the covers for a single. Bell does clip the final ball of the over to deep square-leg for a couple of runs, but Gillespie is still going at only three an over. Excellent effort on this track.

Over 9 Mills 1-4-0-0-0-4 44-0 - Cook pulls Mills away to deep midwicket for a single before the bowler again errs in line to Bell. Far too straight and, with fine-leg up in the circle, Bell has the simple task of helping the ball on its way to the fine-leg boundary. Mills does manage to get the ball outside off stump for the rest of the over but the last one is too short and too wide, allowing Bell to rock back and punch the ball to the extra-cover boundary. Classy shot, and that might be the end of Mills' opening spell.

Over 8 Gillespie 0-0-1-0-0-0 35-0 - Gillespie ends another excellent over with a cracking delivery that bounces and leaves Bell. It whistles past the outside edge and carries through to McCullum way above head height.

Over 7 Mills 0-1-1-0-1-1 34-0 - No real signs of the swing the England bowlers found early in the Kiwi innings. Bell and Cook each pick up well-judged singles, and both get one more with more forceful sots to the legside boundary riders.

Over 6 Gillespie 1-0nb-4-1-0-0-0 30-0 - Cook mistimes a drive into the legside and takes a very risky single. Had Flynn picked up cleanly at midwicket there could have been trouble. Gillespie is then called - wrongly, according to replays - for a front-foot no-ball. That means a free hit, which Bell has a massive swing at and gets an inside edge down to the fine-leg boundary. Double frustration for the Kiwis.

Over 5 Mills 0-0-4-0-1-0 23-0 - Cook pulls a short ball from Mills and the ball runs away to the boundary despite not being properly timed. Quick outfield here at Lord's. Cook guides a wide one from Mills to gully, where a fumble from Oram allows a single. Solid enough start for England.

Over 4 Gillespie 0-0-0-0-0-4lb 18-0 - This is good stuff from Gillespie. He may look innocuous, but he's a tricky customer. Bell shuffles forward and gets rapped on the knee roll. Probably just going over the top. The next ball jags past the outside edge and the final ball of an impressive over brushes the pad and runs away for four leg-byes. Bell was a long way across his stumps again there, and must have been perilously close to lbw. The ball might just have gone on to miss leg stump, but it was a close thing.

Over 3 Mills 0-1-0-4-0-0 14-0 - Bell on the walk again, this time turning the ball into the legside for a single. Cook has one failed attempt at a square-cut but gets it right when Mills sportingly offers another chance. This time he crashes the ball well in front of square for his first boundary of the series.

Over 2 Gillespie 0-0wd-0-0-0-0-0 9-0 - Good start from Gillespie, just a wide down the legside from his first over. The last ball of the over finds Cook's outside edge but lands short of Styris at second slip.

Over 1 Mills 0-4-0-0-4-0 8-0 - Bell is, as usual, down the track to the first ball of the innings, and Mills is ready for him. He fires in a full, straight ball that almost gets round the England opener's pads. Bell stays at home second ball, and gets an almost identical delivery. This time he's perfectly positioned to clip it wide of mid-on for a boundary to get England's chase up and running. Bell is across his stumps again to get his second boundary of the over. It's another high-class shot, clipped slightly squarer through the legside this time. Mills comes back well with a good ball to finish the over. It jags away from the bat and beats the outside edge.

Over 50 Broad 4-1-0-1-1-4 266-5 - This innings just getting away from England in the closing overs. Very ordinary cricket from Broad this time, a half-tracker that Elliott pulls through midwicket. Broad gets away with width from the next ball as Elliott just bunts it away for a single. Broad gets away with another woeful delivery as Styris swings and misses at a wide, length ball. Finally Broad locates a yorker and concedes just a single. Styris gets the last ball of the over down to the third-man boundary. Bit of bad luck for the bowler, but again the line was very poor. Sixty-one runs from the last five overs have got New Zealand up to a very useful total, but they've been helped by woeful death bowling from England. Probably just about honours even at the halfway stage: with a flat pitch and a quick outfield, there's no reason why England shouldn't chase this down to salvage a draw in the series.

Over 49 Sidebottom 1-1-1-2-4-6 255-5 - Sidebottom starts the over well with three yorkers, but then reverts to length to his cost. Styris swings one over the legside for a couple and gets the next one squarer for four. Beautifully-paced innings this from the experienced Styris. The last ball of the over is a fraction shorter which is right in the slot for Styris, and he spanks it over midwicket for another maximum. The last three overs have been excellent for New Zealand, and they'll certainly carry plenty of momentum into their bowling effort: 40 runs have come from the last three overs.

Over 48 Anderson 0-4-1-0-1-6 240-5 - Anderson's final over gets off to a good start with a dot ball, but a low full-toss is then slapped over midwicket for a one-bounce four by Styris. Almost carried for six. Styris backs away and hits the next ball to deep point but can only get a single. Third-man is up in the circle for Elliott which seems a risk, but the next two balls cost only one run. Anderson looks like he's going to get away with a poor over, until the final. ball. Width is offered, and Styris slaps it over cover for six. The last two overs have been a fine example of how not to bowl at the end of a one-day innings. Very ordinary from England's two senior bowlers.

Over 47 Sidebottom 1-6-2-3-0-1 228-5 - Sidebottom back for his penultimate over. He'll presumably bowl overs 47 and 49, while Broad and Anderson will share the other two. Styris gets a single from the first ball of the over before Sidebottom gives Elliott a length ball which he clubs down the ground and just over the man at long-on for an unlikely maximum. That's his first six in ODIs. He gets two to deep point next ball - that's more his usual style - and gets three for a similar shot next ball. Poor from Sidebottom here: a length ball followed by two offering width to the batsman. Better end to the over as Sidebottom belatedly locates his yorker, but it's an excellent one for New Zealand who are now on course for 250. That's certainly no better than par on this pitch, though.

Over 46 Anderson 0-1-0-6-2-1 215-5 - Anderson comes back into the attack, and both players have a big old swing at him early in the over. Both miss. Anderson whacks in a bouncer, which is not the cleverest tactic at this stage and Styris gets a streaky top edge that carries the boundary to take him to 50 (73 balls, 2x4s, 1x6). The next ball is fuller and Styris hits over mid-on for a couple. With Elliott nothing more than a nurdger and a nurdler, the onus is on Styris to find the big shots here. He hits the last ball of the over to Bopara at point and takes a single to keep the strike. That's what New Zealand need here.

Over 45 Broad 1-0-0-0-2-1lb 205-5 - England's big guns can bowl these last six overs - although someone's going to have to bowl two one-over spells. Broad is first up, and does a good job. Styris gets a single first ball, but new batsman Elliott struggles to get the ball away. He likes running the ball to third-man, so England have got the gully areaa well stocked. Just three runs and a leg-bye from the over, which is excellent for England at this stage of the innings.

Over 44 Swann 0-0-0-0-1-W 201-5 WICKET! Styris can't get the ball away, and that piles pressure on Oram who doesn't get the strike until the final ball of the over. He tries to whack it out of the park, but picks out Broad at long-off. That's a big wicket for England and ends an excellent spell from Swann. He's got two wickets - should have been three - and gone at barely three an over.

Over 43 Shah 1-6-2-6-0-2 200-4 - This is the last over from one of the non-bowlers, and Oram decides it's got to go. He launches one way back over deep midwicket without even middling it. He scampers two from the next one and then does find the middle, sending the ball high over long-on for a second six in the over. That brings up Oram's 50 (37 balls, 2x4s, 3x6s) and it's an innings that has given New Zealand a chance of reaching a competitive total here. A scampered two from the final ball of the over sees New Zealand up to 200. Pietersen hasn't got much wrong today, but he probably tried to get one over too many out of Shah. The 10 'fiddled' overs between Wright, Bopara and Shah have cost England 72 runs, and that's the problem they face with Collingwood and Flintoff out of the side.

Over 42 Swann 1-0-0-1-1-1 183-4 - Another excellent over from Swann at this stage of the innings. Just four singles from it, as Styris tries a reverse sweep and makes a mess of it. He, of course, was on the receiving end of Pietersen's switch-hits in the first game.

Over 41 Shah 4-1-1-1-1-1 179-4 - Shah got away with it for one over, but he offers Oram some width first up in his second. The big left-hander needs no encouragement to crunch that through cover for a much-needed boundary. Shah does hold his nerve though, conceding just singles from the remaining deliveries.

Over 40 Swann 0-0-0-0-1-1170-4 - Big let-off for Styris. He misses an attempted drive and Ambrose whips off the bails. Styris' foot is on the line and probably in the air as well, but the third umpire decides there's some doubt there. It was close, but for me there was no doubt. On the line is out, and the third umpire lacked conviction there. Weak decision. Ambrose, who had the best view of anyone, was absolutely convinced that was out. He was right. Excellent over, though - just two singles from it. It's been another good spell from Swann.

Over 39 Shah 1-1-0-0-1-1 168-4 - Here's one of the three other overs. Pietersen turns to the part-time offspin of Shah. Big risk, but the first over passes without alarm. Just four singles from it, but Shah was keen to get through it in a hurry: England have about 40 minutes to bowl their last 11 overs here or they might find another captain incurring the wrath of the match referee.

Over 38 Swann 1-1-0-1-0-1 164-4 - Swann is back into the attack for England and does a good job. Just three singles from it. Pietersen's got some juggling to do here: with 12 overs to go, only six can be bowled by the three frontline quicks. Swann's got three in reserve, but that still leaves three more to find from somewhere.

Over 37 Wright 1-4-1-0-6-1 161-4 - Wright is back into the attack now and, after a single down the ground from Oram, Styris puts away a half-volley with a crisp square-drive. These are dangerous times for England with two key players at the crease. Sure enough, Oram goes after a length ball from Wright and deposits it over long-on for the full count. Wright ends an expensive over with a slower ball that Oram helps down the ground for a single to keep the strike.

Over 36 Broad 0-1-1-1-1-0wd-1 148-4 - Oram defends into the covers and takes a while to chug up to top speed as Styris calls him through for what might just be the slowest quick single of all time. Styris and Oram collect a few more singles before Broad gets one of his bouncers a bit wrong and this time is wided. Oram takes another 'quick' single from the final ball of the over. Pietersen's gamble on a few overs from Sidebottom and Broad was a fair one, but it hasn't paid off.

Over 35 Sidebottom 1-0-1-1-2-1 142-4 - New Zealand safely negotiate another Sidebottom over, and collect six runs as well. Sidebottom chuntering away in frustration, as he tends to do after any delivery that doesn't flatten at least two of the stumps.

Over 34 Broad 1-0-4-1-1-0 136-4 - I like this from Pietersen. Realising the importance of this partnership, Pietersen has turned to the big guns to try and get a crucial wicket. Broad now partnering Sidebottom. The gamble almost pays off, as Oram cuts a short ball and doesn't go over the top or keep it down. But he gets it just wide of Bopara at gully and picks up four. Three singles make seven runs from the over, a good one for New Zealand, and that'll be a drinks break. Happily, no-one's smashed any of their equipment before this one.

Over 33 Sidebottom 1-1-0-0-0-1 129-4 - Sensible captaincy from Pietersen, turning to Sidebottom with Oram new at the crease. Pietersen knows Oram is the man who can shift the momentum in this game, so is gambling on using up some of his top bowler's overs. Three singles from the over, with Oram only facing one delivery.

Over 32 Swann 1-W-0-0-1-1 126-4 WICKET! Swann breaks the partnership as Flynn skips down the track to Swann and just misses the ball. It was a decent-enough flighted ball from the offspinner, but Flynn will still wonder how he's managed to miss it completely. He probably aimed too square. That brings the dangerous Oram to the crease, and a crucial period in this New Zealand innings. Oram gets off the mark with a biff down the ground for one, and Styris collects another run from the final ball of the over.

Over 31 Bopara 0-0-0-4-1-1 123-3 - Pietersen's been quietly impressive as captain here, setting some inventive, thoughtful fields. Had some of the chances been taken, Pietersen'd look like a genius with New Zealand 100-6. But he's doing pretty well. He turns to Bopara here, and Flynn brings up the 50 partnership with a wristy flick in the air but safely through midwicket. He's been the aggressor in this partnership - although he has had the bulk of the strike - and gets another single clipped into the legside. Styris keeps the strike with a single from the final ball of the over.

Over 30 Swann 1-0-1-0-0-1 117-3 - Tidy enough stuff from Swann, just three singles from the over.

Over 29 Wright 1-0-1-0-2-1 114-3 - England could do with a wicket here. Without looking particularly in control, these two are starting to pick up runs at a decent rate. It's mainly singles and the occasional two, but they are coming regularly enough now for New Zealand. Wright bowling a decent spell here, though.

Over 28 Swann 1-0-0-0-2-1 109-3 - Another half-chance goes begging as Bell drops Flynn at cover, diving away and getting a decent hand on the ball. England need to start taking these half-chances. Four runs from the over.

Over 27 Wright 0-1-3-0-0-2 105-3 - Flynn pulls Wright away to deep backward-square, but without much timing. The single does bring up the 100 for the Black Caps, though. Styris then gets a huge stroke of luck with a thick inside edge that flies wide of the leg stump and down to fine-leg. Shah does well to save a single, flicking the ball back before crashing into the boards in front of the Pavilion. Flynn cuts the last ball of the over behind point and gets back for a second run. This partnership is just starting to get going for New Zealand now.

Over 26 Swann 4-1-1-1-1-1 99-3 - Good cricket. Pietersen brings long-on up to mid-on, and Flynn accepts the invitation. He gets the ball over the man and away for four, but doesn't quite time it properly. Pietersen keeps the field as it is. Flynn works the next ball to midwicket for a single before Styris tries to go over the top but slices the ball towards gully, where Bopara dives backwards but can't quite cling on to a tricky chance. Quite an entertaining over actually, given my earlier childishness.

Over 25 Wright 0-0-1-0-1-0 90-3 - England have a plan here for Styris. There are two men at point looking for a catch, and they've got protection behind them as well. Styris does play the ball in that area, but bisects the two men who are inside the 30-yard circle and gets a single. Flynn defends into the offside and gets a single as well. Tidy over from Wright as we reach the halfway mark in the innings.

Over 24 Swann 1-0-0-0-1-1 88-3 - Ah, the middle overs of a one-day international with a limited spinner in action. Is there anything mroe enjoyable than watching batsman milking singles while a bowler just tries to get through his spell without going for more than a run a ball? Gripping stuff. The fans at Lord's are on the edge of their seats as Flynn and Styris nurdle three singles.

Over 23 Wright 1-0-1-2-4-0 85-3 - Flynn gets his first boundary in good style, cracking a square-cut over point and beating the man on the fence. Not such a good over from Wright on that occasion: perhaps he only works in one-over spells.

Over 22 Swann 0-1-0-0-0-1 77-3 - Spin for the first time today as Swann comes into the attack. Interesting field straight away from Pietersen, with midwicket stationed about two-thirds of the way to the boundary for Styris. The field changes to a more orthodox set-up when Flynn's on strike, but it's a tidy start from Swann. Just a single to each batsman, pushed into the covers on each occasion.

Over 21 Wright 1-1lb-0-1-0-0 75-3 - With England a bowler down, Wright is going to have to do more than bowl an excellent 50th over. He's in to bowl the 21st, and it's just as good as his 50th-over over efforts. Flynn survives a huge lbw shout with umpire Llong perhaps thinking the ball pitched outside leg. Replays suggest it pitched right on the leg stump and would definitely have gone on to hit off. But a fair decision - it was marginal about where the ball pitched. Wright ends the over with two that jag back at the left-handed Flynn and beat the inside edge. He's usually described as medium-pace is Wright, but his up in the mid-80s here.

Over 20 Broad 0-0-0-0-0-0 72-3 - Broad ends the Powerplay overs with an accurate maiden. England will be pretty pleased with their position, but the sloppiness that has bugged them in this series since Durham remains.

Over 19 Anderson 4lb-0wd-W-0-0-1-0 72-3 WICKET! After four leg-byes and a wide, Anderson gets his line right to McCullum, who fends tentatively outside the off stump and nicks to slip. Swann takes a comfortable catch, and an uncharacteristically scratchy McCullum knock comes to a tame end. Flynn is the new batsman, and Pietersen strengthens the cordon by adding a second slip and a gully. Flynn edges the ball perfectly between the two for a single to get off the mark.

Over 18 Broad 0-1-0-0-0-4 66-2 - Broad seems to have the uncanny ability to bowl bouncers that fly through at head height but not above. It's a priceless skill in one-day cricket, and few bowlers can do it as well as Broad. He follows up one such short ball to Styris with a fast and full delivery. Styris' feet are stuck in concrete, but he still manages to get the middle of the bat to the ball and send it racing to the cover boundary.

Over 17 Anderson 1-1-0-0-0-1 61-2 - Astonishing incident from the first ball of Anderson's seventh over. McCullum defends - defends, mind - to midwicket, and his bat snaps clean in two right across the middle of the blade. I've never seen a bat break across the grain like that before. Not a great advert for Puma. The umpires decide to take drinks while McCullum gets a new bat and chucks the old one on the bonfire. When play resumes, there are a couple of singles and no more breakages.

Over 16 Broad 1-0-0-0-1-1 58-2 - Broad bowling with real aggression here. In truth, at least one of his short deliveries should probably have been called wide. Just three singles from the over.

Over 15 Anderson 0-0-1-0-0-0 55-2 - Good over from Anderson, following up Broad's wicket-taking with consistent line and length. Just a single to McCullum before new batsman Styris plays himself in with a few sighters.

Over 14 Broad 1-1-0-0-1-W 54-2 - McCullum smacks a pull shot through the legside, but has to settle for one after finding the man in the deep. Taylor nurdles the next ball to short fine-leg and McCullum scurries through for a quick single. McCullum is shuffling across his stumps next ball, but Broad goes wide on the crease and beats him with a beauty that jags away and carries through to Ambrose at head height. WICKET! Broad ends an excellent over with another superb outswinger. This one finds Taylor's outside edge and gives Ambrose a routine catch. And he actually takes this one.

Over 13 Anderson 1lb-1-1-0-1-0 51-1 - Anderson is back into the attack and almost strikes instantly. McCullum gets himself in an almighty tangle trying to work the ball to leg. He gets a leading edge, falls on his backside, and is relieved to see the ball land safely. Four singles from the over, and still no luck for Anderson today.

Over 12 Broad 0-0wd-0-0-0-1-0 47-1 - Quieter over from Broad, just a single and a wide coming from it. Like Anderson, he's bowling with extreme pace if the speed gun's to be believed.

Over 11 Sidebottom 1-0-0-0-1-4 45-1 - Pietersen takes the second Powerplay, with two fielders allowed outside the circle. After a couple of singles, McCullum gets his first boundary - in the 11th over - with a flick past short fine-leg. Always risky having that man up in the circle.

Over 10 Broad 4-0-0-6-W-0 39-1 - The first boudary off the bat finally comes in the 10th over as How edges to the third-man fence. He then goes one better and top-edges a hook shot that just clears Anderson on the square-leg boundary. WICKET! But his fun comes to an end as England finally hold a catch - just. How drives loosely to backward-point, where Ravi Bopara clings on to a simple catch at the second attempt. If that had gone down as well, there'd have been an uprising. Broad greets the new batsman, Ross Taylor, with a sharp bouncer that is ducked easily enough. Action-packed first over from Broad.

Over 9 Sidebottom 1-1-0-0-0-0 29-0 - Another good over from Sidebottom, just two singles coming from it.

Over 8 Anderson 0-0-2-1-1-0 27-0 - Not good from England here. How drives to mid-off, where Pietersen dives over the ball to turn one into two. How and McCullum each work the ball into the legside for a single. Anderson's got good wheels here this morning, but no control thus far.

Over 7 Sidebottom 2-0-1-0-0-0 23-0 - England's body language is poor after that dropped catch. How must now cash in on that unbelievable reprieve, and he starts that process by clipping Sidebottom through square-leg for two and then adds a single for a firm punch to mid-off. McCullum still struggling to lay a bat on Sidebottom and survives another big shout for leg-before. Pitched outside. Very helpful conditions for England's bowlers, but they've given away too many extras and, of course, have not been helped by their keeper.

Over 6 - 0-0-0-1-0wd-0-1 20-0 - Drop! Astonishing miss from the England keeper. With no runs coming, How takes a big hoik across the line at Anderson and skies it straight up in the air. Ambrose covers the ground easily to get underneath it but then, inexplicably, drops the simplest catch a keeper could wish for. The only slightly difficult thing about that catch was getting there. Having done that, it was a 999 out of 1000 catch even without the gloves. Dreadful - almost as bad a piece of cricket as Graeme Swann's last-ball antics at The Oval.

Over 5 Sidebottom 0-0-0-0-1-0 17-0 - Excellent over from Sidebottom, giving McCullum all sorts of problems. A couple of inswingers prompt huge lbw shouts that Nigel Llong turns down, before Sidebottom holds one across the seam and pushes it across McCullum and past the outside edge. A slightly desperate single to mid-on gets McCullum away from the strike.

Over 4 Anderson 2-0wd-0-0-1-2-0wd-0 16-0 - A thick outside edge from McCullum gets a couple before Anderson goes for the inswinger but gets it slightly wrong and sends it down the legside. A better one is squeezed between bat and pad by McCullum and England's half-hearted appeal is turned down. All New Zealand's runs seem to be coming behind square at the moment as both batsmen get genuine edges that fly down to third-man for runs. Another inswinger from Anderson sneaks down the legside. Plenty of movement for Anderson at high pace - he's up over 90mph - but he's struggling to control it at this stage.

Over 3 Sidebottom 0-0-0-1lb-4lb-1 9-0 - New Zealand's openers in all sorts of trouble at the start of this game. Their pads are doing all the scoring as first a single and then a boundary come via the pads. McCullum offers some variation: a leading edge to midwicket getting a single.

Over 2 Anderson 0-1-0-0-0-0 3-0 - Excellent start from Anderson. He beats McCullum with an outswinger, and New Zealand are making no progress at the start of this innings.

Over 1 Sidebottom 1-0-0-0-0-0wd-0 2-0 - Good start from Ryan Sidebottom, who's getting genuine swing early here. Just a single to How off the first ball and a wide from that over.

TOSS Good start for KP; he's won the toss and put the Kiwis in to bat in what look like helpful bowling conditions but with a very flat pitch.

WELCOME to Lord's for the final game of this series. Fifty-over cricket may be on its knees, but this series has certainly done its bit to keep it in the headlines, from switch-hitting in Durham to collisions at The Oval via an abandonment in Birmingham. Plus, of course, Paul Collingwood is banned for England's permanently-dreadful over-rate and Kevin Pietersen has assumed the captaincy.
