Eng v SA - 2nd Test, D4 commentary

Last updated: 21st July 2008

CLOSE So that is your lot for today and also from Headingley for this Test. The Proteas have dominated from start to finish and now hold a 1-0 lead in the series with two games to go. Thanks for your company today and throughout the match, please join us again for the third Test from Edgbaston.

Over 2: Pattinson 0-19-0 - And there it is. A single off an inside edge gets South Africa the one run they need to seal a comprehensive 10-wicket win in the second npower Test.

Over 1: Broad 0-3-0-4-1-08-0 - The scores are level as Smith picks up three through square leg and then McKenzie pulls away a short ball for four. Darren Pattinson is the poor soul who has to go through the motions with the second over.

CHASE So here come South Africa needing all of nine runs to seal victory at long last. It will be batting hero Broad to open the bowling. Personally I would have liked to see Ian Bell get the new cherry. In case you are wondering, the lowest ever Test score is 26, made by New Zealand against England in 1955.

Over 82: Morkel 0-0-1-W-327 - WICKET! - Finally the innings is over, Morkel doing what his team-mates couldn't in knocking over Pattinson with a straight ball. Broad finishes not out for 67 from 60 balls with England holding a lead of eight.

Over 81: Harris 0-0-4-4-0-0326-9 - Pattinson pummels England into the lead! A slog over mid-on goes to the fence and means South Africa will now have to bat again in this match. The next ball is fetched from wide of off stump over the top of mid-wicket, meaning the lead stands at seven. As well as the final wicket, we're also waiting for Harris to turn one.

Over 80: Ntini 0-4-0nb-0-4-0-0318-9 - The 50 partnership comes up for the last wicket, and Pattinson has made five of them. Broad takes his contribution in the stand to 44 with another boundary, this one coming straight past mid-off. Now England trail by just a single.

Over 79: Harris 0-2lb-0-0-0-0309-9 - Pattinson puts his best foot forward for king and country to defend out another over. And you thought the Cristiano Ronaldo transfer saga was a drawn out affair, South Africa just don't appear to want to finish this game off.

Over 78: Ntini 0-2-0-0-0-4307-9 - Broad gets himself another boundary, this one through mid-wicket. South Africa now have a lead of just 12, just a few more blows and they will have been denied an innings victory.

Over 77: Kallis 0-4-4-2-0-1301-9 - Broad goes through to his half century from just 41 deliveries. His batting is coming along brilliantly, it's just a shame he looks about as venomous as a toy snake with the ball in his hand. But he has shown his all-round skills, two of his eight boundaries coming with hook shots of a perplexed Kallis.

Over 76: Harris 0-1-0-0-0-0290-9 - England trail by 29 - surely they aren't going to force South Africa to bat again, are they? An extra day off must be in the minds of the tourists, who have until 7pm to finish this game off and go 1-0 up in the four-match series.

Over 75: Kallis 0-0-0-0-0-0289-9 - Kallis has to pitch the ball almost on his own toes to get a short ball to go over Pattinson's head. South Africa are getting a little frustrated at this last wicket pair holding them up.

Over 74: Harris: 0-2-0-2-0-0289-9 - It's time for some spin, allowing Broad the chance to eye up another Test half century. He picks up four runs but leaves Pattinson on strike for the next over, which will be bowled by Kallis.

Over 73: Kallis 0-0-0-0-0-2285-9 - Pattinson blocks for his life before launching an aerial drive over the infield for two runs. England name their squad for the third Test on Saturday. Perhaps they could suggest for Edgbaston that the batting order is picked out of a hat, much like teams do when they go on tour.

Over 72: Steyn 0-0-1-4-2-0283-9 - Another six runs added to Broad's tally as South Africa have the field up looking to kill off this contest. You'd reckon AB de Villiers is going to be named Man of the Match, though the ever lively Dale Steyn has also been impressive in both innings.

Over 71: Kallis 0-0-4-0-4-0276-9 - Broad brings the deficit down to 43 with two boundaries off the Kallis over, the second of which is a shot his old man would've been proud of in his prime.

Over 70: Steyn 1-0-W-2-0-0268-9 - WICKET! - Panesar's fun is over with as Steyn finally gets one full and straight to flatten the left-hander's off stump. Last man Darren Pattinson (possibly in his last act as an England player?) comes in and gets off the mark first ball with two through mid-wicket.

Over 69: Morkel 0-0-2-1-4-0265-8 - The tail is wagging as Panesar creams a full ball from Morkel Caribbean-style through point to take us to drinks in the final session of day four.

Over 68: Steyn 0-1-0-1-2-0258-8 - Monty continues to get the loudest cheers no matter what he does. He's so popular he could get a standing ovation for blowing his nose. A flick off his hip for two means England now trail by 61.

Over 67: Morkel 2-0-0-0nb-1-4-4254-8 - Panesar gets himself off a pair with a confident-looking front foot drive down the pitch off Morkel. Broad follows suit with two boundaries off the back foot towards the end of a match that the tourists have dominated from the very outset.

Over 66: Steyn 4-0-0-0-0-0242-8 - Just as Mike e-mailed in to say how freaky it was that England had a big-hitting all-rounder and a tall young fast bowler who bats left handed at the crease, the similarities between 1981 came to an end. Broad is still going, though, punching a short ball behind point for four and getting a word in his ear from Steyn about the shot.

Over 65: Morkel 1-0-W-0-0-0238-8 - WICKET! - The dream has died with a thick edge to Kallis at second slip. Morkel has removed Flintoff for 38 off 95 balls and now the end is in sight for South Africa as Marvellous Monty and his average of 5.70 head out to the middle.

Over 64: Steyn 4-2-1-1-4-0237-7 - Never mind sticking, Flintoff's going for broke like any good gambler would. He thumps two trademark blows off the front foot of Steyn, who concedes 12 runs off an over that is completed with a few words for Freddie. It looks a bit like Pee wee herman mouthing off to Giant Haystacks.

Over 63: Morkel 0-1-0-0-0-1225-7 - Flintoff is stuck in a situation now where he doesn't know whether to stick or twist, while he may have some faith in Broad right now to hang around he also knows that Panesar and Pattinson may not last long at all should another wicket go down.

Over 62: Steyn 0-0-0-0-W-3223-7 - WICKET! - Hopes of another Headingley miracle have just gone on hold after Mark Boucher takes his ninth catch of the match, comfortably hanging on to a thin edge from Ambrose. Broad is accompanied by a short leg and a leg gully and nearly falls into the trap with a flick off his hip from his very first ball.

Over 61: Ntini 0-4-0-4-0-0220-6 - Finally the beast has awoken. Feeling more and more at ease out in the middle, Flintoff goes on the attack against Ntini, pulling away a short ball and then driving on the up to get two fours from the over. It must be all the sudden talk of that 1981 Ashes Test at this venue that has got Freddie firing all of a sudden.

Over 60: Steyn 3-0-0-1lb-0-0212-6 - A push back past the bowler nets Ambrose another three runs. He's now moved along to 36, hence the sudden lack of e-mails coming in asking for the recall of Geraint Jones, Chris Read, James Foster, Jack Russell or any other person who's ever worn large gloves in their line of work, such as the man from the old Tango adverts.

Over 59: Ntini 0-0-2-4-0-1208-6 - Ambrose is growing here, not in height obviously but certainly in confidence. A push through the covers for two brings up the half century stand for the seventh wicket and he also gets a boundary with a thick-edged drive past gully.

Over 58: Steyn 0-2-0-0-0-4201-6 - Stop the presses - Dale Steyn doesn't look a happy man. He's getting some swing but can't yet get it consistently in the right areas to bother these two. Flintoff dispatches a back-of-a-length delivery through square cover to bring up England's 200.

Over 57: Ntini 0-1-0-4-0-0195-6 - Ambrose tucks away a legside half volley as England look to cash in against the new ball at every opportunity. They now trail by 124.

Over 56: Steyn 0-0-0-0-0-4190-6 - The new cherry is now available for the Proteas and Smith quickly summons the angry young man Steyn to have the first over with it. If Dale doesn't like some sort of thrash metal or gothic punk music I would be very surprised. There's some swing, mostly to the boundary off the last ball as Ambrose hits an aerial drive over the top of gully.

Over 55: Kallis 0-0-2-0-0-0186-6 - It's Kallis to get through the overs before the second new ball, Ambrose getting two runs off his over with a firm push through the covers.

Over 54: Harris 0-0-2-0-0-0184-6 - After patting back deliveries from Harris in the afternoon Flintoff decides two balls into the final session that he's going to have a dart, lofting the spinner back over his head and just out of the reach of the back peddling Graeme Smith.

UMPIRES RETURN We're about to get underway in the evening session as the two officials head out to the middle. England still trail by 137 with the new ball just around the corner.

TEA And that is the end of session number two of Monday's action. South Africa have once again picked up two wickets, while England have mustered only 52 runs in the 28 overs since lunch.

Over 53: Morkel 1-0-1-0-4-0182-6 - Ambrose has had enough of ducking, going after a bouncer and slapping it in front of square for four. There are more problems with the sunshine dazzling the batsmen. Not sure what it is this time, it could be some tin foil from a spectator's sandwiches, or it could be that R2D2 and CP30 have decided to come along for a day at the Test.

Over 52: Harris 1-0-0-0-0-0176-6 - As steady and reliable as he is, I'm not sure Harris is able to even turn a door handle. South Africa have five men around the bat to Ambrose but he still doesn't look in too much trouble.

Over 51: Morkel 0-0-0-0-4-0175-6 - After a mis-hit and a swing-and-a-miss Ambrose finally makes contact with a horizontal stroke off Morkel, hammering away a wide ball through backward point for a four that takes him into double figures.

Over 50: Harris 0-3b-0-0-0-0171-6 - Boucher misses a legside delivery that leaks three byes. I think it's fair to say South Africa's wicketkeeper has enjoyed his lunches in international cricket and is not quite as agile as he once was. So far in this session we've seen 41 runs scored in 25 overs.

Over 49: Steyn 3-0-3-0-1-0168-6 - Suddenly the shackles are broken with seven runs from the over. Ambrose gets three of them thanks to a nice cover drive while Flintoff follows suit with a rather more streaky looking drive in the air through point.

Over 48: Harris 0-0-0-0-0-0161-6 - It's a second successive maiden from Harris, Flintoff even failing to put away a full toss that drifts in onto his pads.

Over 47: Steyn 0-0-1-0-1-1161-6 - Even the normally lively Steyn (does he dye his hair?) appears to have become a little sleepy at the sight of England blocking stoutly. His lack of patience leads to three singles coming off the over, a feast so far during an afternoon of famine.

Over 46: Harris 0-0-0-0-0-0158-6 - Spinner Harris comes on for a change of pace, though England are quite happy to remain stuck in neutral. Ambrose pats back a maiden as the viewers try their best not to nod off in the afternoon sunshine.

Over 45: Ntini 1-0-0-0-0-0158-6 - The spectators come alive to cheer the first run off the bat in five overs when Ambrose nudges a single into the leg side. This pair have now mustered six runs in 54 deliveries. I'm not sure if it's possible but could England be deducted runs for slow play?

Over 44: Steyn 0-0-0-0-0-0157-6 - It's another maiden as the scorers get to play join the dots in the book. Harvey's not even keeping Monty in his team - apparently he can't bat, he can't field and his bowling is about as useful as a spud gun in a war.

Over 43: Ntini 0-0-0-0nb-0-0-0157-6 - Graeme Smith is quick to tell the under-pressure Ambrose that Matt Prior got a century for Sussex yesterday. As if having to listen to that wasn't bad enough, the wicketkeeper cops a blow as an Ntini delivery lifts off a length and hits the bat handle.

Over 42: Steyn 0-0-0-0-0-0156-6 - South Africa hope for some Steyn removal before tea as Dale comes back into the attack to give the impressive Kallis a break. Since the fall of Cook we've seen four runs from six overs. I'd say it's like watching paint dry but that would be offensive to hard work done by decorators up and down the land.

Over 41: Ntini 0-0-0-0-0-0156-6 - Ntini's bowling so wide of the crease he's nearly on the next strip across. He's changed back to his old style having been so ineffective when trying to get closer to the stumps in the Lord's Test.

Over 40: Kallis 0-1-1-0-0-1156-6 - From his 18th ball Ambrose finally gets off the mark. The crowd gives the wicketkeeper an ironic cheer for his achievement. Sir Ian of Beefy on commentary reckons Flintoff should go down swinging, much like he did in the Ashes Test at Headingley back in 1981. Remember what happened then? Perhaps it's a little too much to ask for another miracle performance from an all-rounder.

Over 39: Ntini 0-0-0-0-0-0153-6 - Flintoff comfortably sees off an Ntini over that sees most of the deliveries left well wide of off stump. We are now at drinks in the afternoon session with England 166 behind with just four wickets in hand.

Over 38: Kallis 0-0-0-0-0-1153-6 - Flintoff gets off the mark with a single from the final ball of Kallis' 11th over. Already the e-mails are flooding in over what England should do for the next Test - sack Vaughan, bring back Harmison and Jones, Matthew even says get rid of all of 'em, except Monty of course, everyone loves Monty.

Over 37: Ntini 0-0-0-0-0-0152-6 - Makhayan Ntini takes over from the lackluster Morkel as some songs finally ring out from the few present on the Western Terrace. At this rate they'll have barely drunk enough pints to get their beer snake going by the time this match is over and done with.

Over 36: Kallis 0-0-W-0-0-0152-6 - WICKET! - And another one bites the dust. Cook's 178-ball vigil comes to an end in meek fashion, a leading edge from a lazy on drive only giving a simple catch to cover. Here's Freddie now striding out. Talk about cometh the hour, cometh the man. England need a miracle now to avoid an innings defeat, can they even stretch it into the final day?

Over 35: Morkel 0-0-0-0nb-0nb-0-0-0152-5 - There's a lengthy delay midway through the Morkel over as Tim Ambrose appears to be put off by the reflection from somebody's sunglasses in the crowd behind the bowler's arm. You see, this is what happens when we get sunshine in England, that and too many people wearing too few pieces of clothing.

Over 34: Kallis 0-0-4-0-0-0150-5 - The 150 comes up with a classical back foot drive from Cook that perfectly dissects the fielders at point and cover. Stephen wonders if I have anything planned for tomorrow if this finishes early. I will make up for the possible lack of Test cricket by watching crazy men attempt to ride their bikes over the Alps in the latest stage of the Tour de France.

Over 33: Morkel 0-1b-0-0-1-0146-5 - Umpire Billy Bowden has a word with Morkel after the seamer runs right down the middle of the strip in his follow through. To be honest, if they want to tear it up enough to help Harris they may need to be wearing full length golf spikes.

Over 32: Kallis 0-0-0-4-0-0144-5 - Cook gives the home fans something to cheer about with a pull well in front of square that beats the flat-footed Harris to the mid-wicket fence. However, the next ball the opener gropes outside his off stump to play and miss at a delivery that seemed to swing away slightly at the last minute.

Over 31: Morkel 0-0-0-W-0-0140-5 - WICKET! - Bell goes to a blinder of a catch from AB de Villiers at gully. A firm cut stroke from a ball short and wide outside off stump is thumped off the middle but within range for the Proteas' best fielder to dive quickly to his right and hang onto an absolute stunner. Funny how there's no boos for him now. He puts up his finger to make sure everyone knows that this is out and that there is no doubt about this catch hitting the ground.

Over 30: Kallis 0-0-0-0-0-0140-4 - A little stat for you - James Anderson's 44 overs in South Africa's innings of 522 was just the second time he has bowled more than 40 in an innings. The other occasion was against India at The Oval last year. No one can say he doesn't do his bit for the cause.

Over 29: Morkel 0-0-0nb-0-2-0-0140-4 - Bell is forced to take one hand off the bat as a Morkel delivery seems to bounce a little bit more than he expected. After the fancy dress appearances of the likes of Jimmy Saville, Superman, the cast of the Wizard of Oz and Buzz Lightyear during the weekend, today's sparse crowd have come dressed a little more appropriately.

Over 28: Kallis 0-0-0-1-0-0137-4 - Plenty of you feel Pietersen deserves a flea in his ear for getting out in such a fashion before lunch. It's a bit hard to criticise a man with a Test average of over 50, England don't have too many of those. Perhaps Jimmy can talk him through how to play a more dogged innings this afternoon.

Over 27: Morkel 0-1w-0-0-4-0-0136-4 - Cook goes through to his 12th Test 50 in fine style, hammering away a short ball in front of point off the back foot. That is his fourth four in the innings, though first of the fourth day, and he will now hope to double up. In his last 13 innings since he scored a century, Cook has scored 40 or more on five occasions.

Over 26: Kallis 0-0-1-0-0-0131-4 - It's Kallis to kick things off in the afternoon session. He's looking for some reverse swing with this old ball now and remember he did get Bell out in England's first innings. Nasser Hussain suggested Anderson had gone from a boy to a man this morning, perhaps leading to a Disney picture about the lad who defied his indifferent hair to become an international superstar.

SELECTION Tom's e-mailed in and put himself in the shoes of the selection panel and decided to drop Vaughan, promote Jimmy to four and find out if Darren Pattinson has a brother who could play at Edgbaston.

LUNCH South Africa will be much happier when they sit down to tuck in having struck twice in two overs before the break. England have six wickets left and still trail by 189 runs.

Over 25: Steyn 1-1-0-1-4lb-0130-4 - Bell flicks a single down to fine leg to get off the mark in what is a scrappy final over to the morning session. We've seen 80 runs in 25 overs of play, but most importantly two wickets go down, including the key scalp of Pietersen for just 13.

Over 24: Kallis 4-W-0-0-0-0123-4 - WICKET! - Kallis comes on and gets the big wicket South Africa wanted with his second ball. After the first was slapped through point off the front foot the second finds the edge of KP's bat as it's dangled outside off stump. That's an innings of 13 off five balls, just what your side needs when they are trying to bat two days to save a Test.

Over 23: Steyn 0-0-4-W-4-4nb-1119-3 - WICKET! - Anderson's efforts come to an end as he's trapped bang in front by a very full ball from Steyn. The left-hander departs for a gritty 34 from 80 balls and gets a standing ovation from the crowd and his colleagues on the balcony as he trudges off. Steyn tries the same ball again to KP, who gets a long way across and manages to flick it fine for four runs. He follows that up with a straight drive down the park to immediately announce his arrival to the middle.

Over 22: Harris 2-0-0-3-1-0105-2 - Cook nudges a two down to fine leg to bring up the 50 partnership from 138 balls. Jimmy's stood at the non-striker's end looking a little dazed, although to be fair he has that look on his face most days.

Over 21: Steyn 0-0-0-0-0-099-2 - Martin's impressed with Anderson's batting and thinks he could earn a permanent place in the top order. Perhaps the sight of him being hit on the arm turning his back on a short ball suggests he's not ready for a top four spot just yet. The physiotherapist comes on to have a look and then immediately returns to the scene after the very next delivery strikes Jimmy full on in the grill. He's down on the ground for some time before gingerly getting up and holding his jaw but he carries on after a change of helmet.

Over 20: Harris 1-0-0-4-4-199-2 - Anderson unfurls two textbook shots that would have made any top order batsman proud. Cover drives, one off the front foot, t'other off the back, and a single off the last ball sees him go beyond his previous Test best of 28, made against New Zealand earlier this year.

Over 19: Steyn 0-0-0-0-0-089-2 - A maiden is seen off by Anderson, who of course looked to be plum leg before in the closing overs last night except to umpire Billy Bowden. He's now faced 64 deliveries in a partnership worth 39 runs.

Over 18: Harris 1-0-0-0-0-089-2 - Anderson goes to 20 with a sneaky single on the off side. He's closing in on his Test best of 28, while his first-class highest score is 37 not out. As for England's best ever nightwatchman, Alex Tudor made 99no against New Zealand at Edgbaston in 1999. Harold Larwood and Eddie Hemmings both managed 98 against Australia in Sydney, though obviously not in the same Test.

Over 17: Steyn 0-0-0-0-0-088-2 - Steyn's all over the pitch. He's certainly leaving no area untouched in this spell, mixing short stuff with some full balls that are so wide Cook wouldn't have been able to reach them with a barge pole. As for nightwatchman records, Anderson has a way to go to break the record score - Jason's Gillespie's 201no against Bangladesh.

Over 16: Harris 1-0-0-0-0-088-2 - Anderson's in a little trouble playing for turn that's never forthcoming. It was slightly foolish of him to think that Harris may get one to do anything but go straight, even out of the footholes.

Over 15: Steyn 0-0-0-2-0-087-2 - Steyn drops plenty in short at Anderson, accompanying ever bumper with a nasty look that suggests Jimmy's just asked why if he dyes his hair. Unfazed by the bouncer attack, Anderson stands up and punches a rare full ball straight down the ground for an easy two runs. Is it too early to start digging out the nightwatchman records?

Over 14: Harris 1-0-0-0-0-085-2 - It's a double change from Graeme Smith as he turns to his spinner Paul Harris for the final over before drinks. There's plenty of men around the bat but it doesn't stop Anderson immediately going on the sweep - how will South Africa solve this Jimmy riddle?

Over 13: Steyn 0-0-2-0-0-084-2 - There's a change in the bowling as the nastiest Steyn since I spilt beetroot on my cricket whites during one tea interval takes over from Ntini. One ball jags bag to Cook and clips the thigh, leading to a loud but unsuccessful appeal from the South African slip fielders.

Over 12: Kallis 0-0-0-0-0-182-2 - England now trail by the small matter of 237 as Andrew e-mails in with just one question and one question only - will Darren Pattinson ever play another Test?

Over 11: Ntini 0-1-1-2-1-081-2 - Anderson continues to take risky singles, goading the South African fielders to try and give him another four runs free of charge. It has to be said that this is the least athletic Proteas side in the field I've ever seen since they returned to international cricket.

Over 10: Kallis 0-0-0-4-0-276-2 - Just like the time plain Jane took her glasses off in the Aussie soap Neighbours, Anderson is now beginning to blossom. He hits a back foot drive through extra cover for four and then flicks a rising ball off his hip for a couple more. Right now it's tough to tell whose the opener and who is the nightwatchman.

Over 9: Ntini 0-1-0-0-0-570-2 - A tight run would have seen Anderson gone with a direct hit at the non-strikers' end. Instead the left-hander gets himself a bonus four runs as no one is at home to back up the throw. He came within a stride or two of what must've been his first ever international six.

Over 8: Kallis 0-0-2-0-0-064-2 - There's a change in the attack with Kallis coming on but there's no alteration in Anderson's approach. He's sticking out in the middle like a barnacle on the side of a fishing boat, playing and missing at a few but defending most with a nice straight bat.

Over 7: Ntini 0-0-0-0-0-262-2 - Cook keeps his eyes on a short ball that fails to get up above waist height to work the ball out to the man at deep square leg. Despite holding a massive lead, South Africa don't mind having fielders out on the fence. They start the innings yesterday with a sweeper at backward point.

Over 6: Morkel 0-1-3-0-0-060-2 - Cook's first shot in anger this morning gets him three runs past mid-off to ironic cheers from those who have paid to come in and watch. Paul Harris' smart dive saves a run for the South Africans.

Over 5: Ntini 0-0-0nb-0-0-0-056-2 - Jamie reckons it is time for Vaughan to stand down and let either Paul Collingwood or Andrew Strauss take over. It's safe to say that the England skipper is struggling for form. His feet were moving around so much in the crease last night you began to think he might be showing off his nifty moves ahead of the next series of Strictly Come Dancing.

Over 4: Morkel 0-0nb-0-0-0-0-055-2 - After getting off the mark Anderson is now giving us a run through is full repertoire of strokes, sadly though at no stage does willow make contact with leather. England had the light roller on the pitch this morning, which is very different from the high roller or the Bay City Roller.

E-MAILS As always, your e-mails are more than welcome via the FEEDBACK section. Colin is likely to be the first of many to drop a line to talk about current England skipper Michael Vaughan and his lack of runs.

Over 3: Ntini 0-0nb-0-0-0-0-154-2 - Anderson manages to keep out one delivery that like many of the ideas seen on Dragon's Den, barely gets off the ground. The tail-ender finally manages to get off the mark courtesy of a thick edge square of the wicket, meaning he has now stretched his run without a Test duck to 38 innings.

Over 2: Morkel 0-0-0-1-1lb-052-2 - Morne Morkel gets first chance at the Football Ground End. Cook gets England off and running on day four with a push into the gap at cover for a single. The home side now trail by the mere margin of 267.

Over 1: Ntini 0-0-0-0-0-050-2 - Jimmy sees out a maiden to start the day, only one ball causing him any real alarm as it barely gets above ankle height as it sneaks past his outside edge.

STARTING OUT Alastair Cook and nightwatchman James Anderson head out to the middle in front of a sparse crowd at Headingley Carnegie. There won't be many beer snakes being constructed on the Western Terrace today.

GOOD AND BAD England can at least be relieved that there is not much cloud cover over their heads. The only stuff in the sky is of the white and fluffy variety. Of course, England might prefer it if there was some large dark ones ready to dump some rain on the venue. Rain may well be their best hope of salvaging a draw here.

SUMMARY England come out this morning already two wickets down needing another 270 runs to make the Proteas have to bat again. This is as sticky a situation as I've seen since Sticky the stick insect was on that sticky bun.

GOOD MORNING and welcome to over-by-over coverage of day four of the second Test between England and South Africa.
