Darren Gough's 19-year first-class career is over after Yorkshire left him out of their squad for the final LV County Championship fixture of the season, away at Sussex.

The Tykes skipper, 38, had already announced he intends to hang up his boots at the end of the season but injury has robbed him of the opportunity for a farewell appearance at Hove.

Gough, who played 58 Tests and 159 ODIs for England from 1994-2006, has not ruled out continuing for Yorkshire in the Twenty20 Cup next season.

The Barnsley-born seamer heads off into the sunset having taken 855 first-class wickets at an average of 27.15. Of those victims, 229 came in the Test arena, placing him ninth on England's all-time list, just below former new-ball partner Andrew Caddick.

Michael Vaughan will also miss the trip to Sussex due to a strained side muscle and sore knee, denying him a final chance to impress the England selectors before they name the squad for the winter Tests in India.

Yorkshire head into the match knowing only a victory will be enough to guarantee they avoid relegation, with Sussex another of the teams that could join already-doomed Surrey in Division Two next season.

Pakistan seamer Naved-ul-Hasan is out due to a knee injury, while Gough's vice-captain Anthony McGrath faces a late fitness test on his hamstring.

Jonathan Bairstow is included in a 13-man squad and could make his first-class debut, 38 years after his father David first appeared for the county.

Yorkshire squad: Adam Lyth, Andrew Gale, Anthony McGrath (capt), Jacques Rudolph, Jonathan Bairstow, Tim Bresnan, Gerard Brophy (wk), Adil Rashid, Richard Pyrah, Matthew Hoggard, Deon Kruis, David Wainwright and Steve Patterson
