New Zealand will be looking for their new-look batting line-up to fire as they bid to square the Test series with South Africa in Wellington.

The Black Caps failed to score more than 200 in either of their innings in the second Test, Vernon Philander taking 10 wickets in the match to clinch a comfortable win for the Proteas.

Having also struggled for runs in the drawn series opener in Dunedin, the hosts have opted to make changes for the match at the Basin Reserve, which is live on Sky Sports.

Opener Rob Nicol has paid the price for a poor run of form and the selectors have called up Daniel Flynn in his place.

The left-hander last played for his country three years ago but will now come back in at the top of the order, forming an opening partnership with Martin Gputill.

Brownlie back

Dean Brownlie, fit again after recovering from a fractured finger, is also set to be handed a place in the middle order, meaning the Kiwis will change the make-up of their team and pick six specialist batsmen.

Former skipper Daniel Vettori, who will drop down one place in the order to accomodate Brownlie's return, admits the home team's focus has been on solving their run-scoring issues.

"If you break down the two Test matches so far, the majority of the time we have competed," he said.

"Unfortunately we let ourselves down with the bat in the first Test and we fought back with the ball, and then let ourselves down again with the bat in the second Test.

"The talk from (coach) John Wright and (captain) Ross Taylor so far is about applying ourselves with the bat and putting a score on the board for our three seamers to make the most of these conditions."

Tough nut

New Zealand will be eager to finish their summer on a high having fought back to draw the Trans-Tasman Trophy in Australia and then defeated Zimbabwe in all formats of the game.

South Africa, however, have proved a much tougher nut to crack, winning both the one-day and twenty20 series already. They are likely to be unchanged for the final match of the tour.

"It's pretty influential on our summer," Vettori admitted. "If we can scrap back from this Test match, then overall it's been a very successful summer. If not, then I think we will remember it for that loss (in Hamilton).

"It's really important, the boys understand that as well and the guys have done it in the past so this is an opportunity to try and do it again."
