Graeme Smith is hoping South Africa can continue to improve after progressing to the Super Eights with a 59-run victory over Afghanistan in the ICC World Twenty20.

The Proteas posted 139-7 before knocking their opponents over for 80, although the tournament's minnows were 25-7 at one stage.

And Smith believes that once his bowlers get the killer instinct the side will be difficult to beat, starting against New Zealand on Thursday.

"We can still be a lot more convincing than what we were today but it was good to see the guys bowl with great intensity and it was a good workout for us," he told Sky Sports 1.

"We did what we needed to do. It was an important game for us to get past. Now we're in the Super Eights, an important phase of the competition.

"You're always looking for more. I think if we can just carry on a good upward curve, keep improving.

"It's obviously an important phase of the tournament and if we can really hit our strengths now then we can start getting the whole game together.

"If this team can click then we'll really become a real force in this tournament so that's what we're searching for."
