England captain Michael Vaughan admitted India deserved to come out on top after just edging a hard-fought npower Test series.

A draw in the final match at The Brit Oval means the tourists clinch the series thanks to their victory at Trent Bridge.

While Rahul Dravid's side celebrate their success, England are left to rue their luck after weather denied them a certain win at Lord's in the opening Test.

However, Vaughan was full of praise for India, who had not won a series on English soil since 1986.

"Full credit to Rahul (Dravid) and his team," England's skipper told Sky Sports.

"They've played some really good cricket, particularly in games two and three when they've put us under pressure from the first session.

"We played a good game at Lord's but didn't get over the line there.

"Rahul and his team deserve their victory because they've just played cricket a little bit better than us."

Positives

Despite the disappointment of suffering defeat on home soil for the first time under his leadership, Vaughan feels there are plenty of positive signs for England.

He was delighted at the spirit they showed to bat out the final day at The Oval to salvage a draw - thanks in no small part to a century from Kevin Pietersen.

"If you can't win them you draw them," he said. "I'm very proud of the way they fought hard over the last couple of days to get a draw.

"I'm also proud of the way they fought throughout the series. We've got a young inexperienced bowling attack and they can all take a lot of credit for they they've bowled.

"We've come out of the series with a loss but there are a lot of positives to take. We are relatively young and you have to learn from your experiences.

"We've got to analyse our mistakes and also look at the positives, and make sure we go to Sri Lanka with some good game plans and try and force a victory there."
