Vaughan: Promising more from his England team

England captain Michael Vaughan believes the series win over New Zealand shows the signs are good for the future, though he insists there is still work to do.

The tourists wrapped up victory in the third Test against New Zealand in Napier to claim a 2-1 win after having lost the opener in Hamilton.

Vaughan was particularly pleased that newcomers like Tim Ambrose and Stuart Broad had played a big part in helping turn the series around.

However while admitting that England have a promising crop of rising stars, he feels they must continue to improve if they are to challenge the top teams.

Improvement

"There's a lot of talent in the dressing room that needs bringing out," he told Sky Sports.

"We're still not playing the game which we can play. There is a lot of improvement to be done but there are certainly good signs that the England team can move forward and become a hard team to beat.

"There are a lot of young players and you have to give them a lot of respect for the way they've fought and the character they've shown.

"We were hammered in Hamilton and in three days we managed to turn it around."

The England skipper reserved special praise for Broad, who made the most of his chance after being drafted in for the second Test in Wellington.

As well as getting wickets the 21-year-old also contributed useful runs down the order to make himself a key member of the team.

Special

"He's played three Test matches, so I'm sure he'll get blown up (by the media)," Vaughan said.

"He has got something quite special - a tremendous character, a simplistic action and he puts the ball in the right area at a decent pace.

"He can also bat and field, so that's a decent package for a 21-year-old!

"I was really impressed with the way he bowled on the fourth afternoon. To bowl bouncers with good pace is a really good sign for the team. I hope he keeps on improving."
