Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews was full of praise for Rangana Herath after the spinner bowled his side to victory in the second Test against Bangladesh.

The left-arm slow bowler celebrated his 35th birthday in fine style by claiming 7-89 in Bangladesh's second innings, giving him 12 wickets in the match.

His efforts left Sri Lanka chasing 160 to win, a target they comfortably chased down with seven wickets in hand in Colombo. The result means they win the series 1-0 after the opening Test ended in a draw.

"What more can you ask from Herath? After Murali (Muttiah Muralitharan), Herath has been the man for us," said Mathews.

"He lands all six balls on the same spot which so many bowlers don't do. With his variations he takes a lot of wickets but he has a lot of control as well."

"We were put under a little bit of pressure in the first innings, but Sangakkara and (Dinesh) Chandimal scored those useful centuries. Bangladesh played really well but I never really doubted my team."

Bangladesh counterpart Mushfiqur Rahim admitted the tourists had fallen short in their second innings of 265, though he was also keen to look at the positives from the series.

"We were probably 100 runs short in the second innings," said the wicketkeeper-batsman.

"We are really playing well over the last one-and-a-half years. A couple of young guys played really well against Sri Lanka in a pressure situation. Hopefully, they will get better with time."
