Canada tasted success in a World Cup match for just the second time in their history as Jimmy Hansra's 70 led them past Kenya by five wickets in Delhi.

Hansra, dropped before he had scored, put on 132 with skipper Ashish Bagai (64no) to break the back of his side's pursuit of a target of 199.

Canada's top three had each fallen after making a start - Rizwan Cheema blasted 17 off 13 balls before being bowled by Elijah Otieno, Zubin Surkari (10) perished to Jimmy Kamande's direct hit from mid-on and Ruvindu Gunasekera (18) was stumped from James Ngoche's bowling.

But, having reduced Canada to 48-3, Seren Waters grassed a simple chance when Hansra spooned his second ball to mid-on - and Kenya were made to pay a heavy price.

Stand

Hansra, the Indian-born right-hander, reached his maiden ODI half-century from 74 balls, including four fours and two sixes.

He was well supported by Bagai, who went to a painstaking 50 of his own from 83 deliveries.

With the finishing line in sight, Canada suffered a minor wobble as Hansra and Tyson Gordon (3) departed in quick succession.

But Bagai stood firm to see his team home with 27 balls to spare.

Earlier, Henry Osinde's career-best figures of 4-26 helped bowl out Kenya for 198 after they opted to bat first in the Group A encounter.

The Uganda-born paceman took three wickets in his opening spell to set the tone for the day.

Tanmay Mishra and Thomas Odoyo each made 51 to engineer a recovery of sorts from 57-5.

Wickets tumbled as Kenya tried unsuccessfully to pick up the run-rate in the final few overs and they were all out from the last delivery of the innings.

Canada's only previous victory in four World Cups was against Bangladesh in 2003, while Kenya - semi-finalists eight years ago - have now lost all four of their matches at this tournament.
