Somerset made 282-9 declared against Somerset at Taunton on a day dominated by news of Mark Boucher's retirement from international cricket.

The opening tour fixture for the Proteas in England finished as an inevitable draw, Somerset reaching 50-1 in the final session having called an early halt to their first innings on 312-8.

However, the match has been overshadowed by the severe eye injury suffered by Boucher, forcing the veteran wicketkeeper to call an early end to his Proteas career.

During the lunchbreak skipper Graeme Smith read out a statement from the 35-year-old, who underwent emergency surgery on Monday night after being struck in the left eye by a bail.

Uncertain recovery

Boucher will head home to continue what he described as an "uncertain recovery" from what has been described as a lacerated eyeball.

After the start of day two had been delayed an hour by rain, Jacques Kallis, affected by the traumas of his close friend, retired not out on his overnight score of 45.

Hashim Amla top-scored with 64 for the visitors and JP Duminy made 53 before becoming one of three victims for Craig Overton, who at one stage found himself on a hat-trick in the afternoon session.

Robin Peterson and Morne Morkel enjoyed the chance to have a hit, the latter belting five fours and a six before being caught off the bowling of Jamie Overton, Craig's twin brother.

With Kallis electing not to continue his innings, skipper Smith opted to end the innings early when Imran Tahir fell leg before to George Dockrell for a duck, leaving Peterson unbeaten on 33.

There was enough time before the two teams shook hands for Arul Suppiah to bag a a pair, the opener pinned leg before by former team-mate Vernon Philander.

Alex Barrow was unbeaten on 31 and Nick Compton was 18 not out when the teams called off proceedings at 5pm.
