Yorkshire Bank 40
The County Ground, Taunton
The rain washed away any hopes that Somerset or Surrey held out of reaching the semi-finals of this year's Clydesdale Bank 40 competition when their match at Taunton was abandoned after just 27 balls were bowled.
The highlight of the 20 minutes play that was possible were the two sweetly struck boundaries by Kevin Pietersen off consecutive balls from Steve Kirby, the first driven through extra cover, the second clipped off his legs through midwicket.
After the match was delayed by 15 minutes by the weather, Somerset won the toss and opted to field and the first over saw Kirby concede just a single from the Old Pavilion End.
Peter Trego from the River End struck first with the fourth ball of his second over when Steven Davies mistimed a drive and lofted it instead to deep mid on where George Dockrell safely took the chance.
New batsman Pietersen punched his second ball from Trego through mid wicket for three and then took his two boundaries off Kirby before the rain came down and the players left the field, with Surrey 29-1 and both Pietersen and Jason Roy 11 not out.
The umpires inspected three time before eventually calling the game off at 5.30pm, the no-result confirming Hampshire as Group B winners.County Championship. Click here to bet.
