Marlon Samuels: fine all-round contribution
Pune Warriors remain perfect at the start of the new Indian Premier League season after recording a 22-run win over Kings XI Punjab.
A third-wicket partnership of 81 between Marlon Samuels and Robin Uthappa helped the Warriors post a respectable 166-6 from their 20 overs.
West Indian Samuels cracked 46 off 39 balls and Uthappa made 40 off just 33 before both became two of Harmeet Singh's three victims.
Australian all-rounder Steven Smith (25) provided some useful runs in the closing overs while Manish Pandey contributed a late cameo, making 12 from only four balls with a six and a four.
Kings XI captain Adam Gilchrist (6) and fellow opener Paul Valthaty (1) were both then run out in a disastrous start to the run chase.
Mandeep Singh and Abhishek Nayar both made 24 but were unable to stop the run-rate spiralling upwards, leaving the visitors up against it.
Bipul Sharma did hammer an unbeaten 18-ball 35, which included three fours and two sixes, at the end of the innings, but his contribution proved too little too late.
Samuels completed a fine all-round performance with 1-23 from his four overs, helping Pune make it two wins from as many matches.
