Former Australia batsman Ricky Ponting steered Hobart Hurricanes to a seven-wicket victory over Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League.

Ponting, more used to gracing the MCG than SCG at this time of year, finished on 63 not out from 52 deliveries as the Hurricanes chased down a target of 155 off the penultimate ball.

Hobart needed nine from the final over and Englishman Owais Shah (13no) sealed the win with back-to-back boundaries off Sixers spinner Sunil Narine (0-39).

Opening batsman Aiden Blizzard had set up the run chase with a 30-ball 48, while Sydney seamer Luke Feldman impressed with 2-21.

Earlier, all of the Sixers' top order made starts as the home side posted a total of 154-8 after being asked to bat.

England T20 opener Michael Lumb and Steve Smith each contributed 34. Hobart seamer Ben Laughlin finished with career-best figures in the format of 4-31.

The result moves the Hurricanes up to six points, the same number as the Adelaide Strikers and Melbourne Stars, and two behind the table-topping Melbourne Renegades.

The Sixers remain second bottom of the eight-team league with one win from five matches. Only their city rivals - Sydney Thunder - are worse off.
