Kieron Pollard hit a half-century as Mumbai Indians beat Chennai Super Kings by nine runs in the Indian Premier League.

The West Indian's 57 not out came from 38 balls and powered Mumbai to 148-6 after they had chosen to bat first at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Opening batsman Sachin Tendulkar was trapped lbw for a duck by Dirk Nannes (1-18) in the first over and, despite Dinesh Karthik's 37, Mumbai slumped to 83-6.

But Pollard, whose contribution contained four fours and five sixes, shared an unbroken seventh-wicket stand of 65 with Harbhajan Singh (21no) during the remainder of the innings.

Mumbai left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha claimed 2-16 as Chennai, who lost in the final of last year's tournament, were reduced to 66-5 in reply.

Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni's 26-ball 51 kept the game alive but, with 10 required, he holed out to Pollard on the midwicket boundary from the first delivery of the final over, bowled by Munaf Patel (3-29).
