India needed a little less than a session to complete an eight-wicket victory on day five of the opening Test against Australia in Chennai.

Australia debutant Moises Henriques and No 11 Nathan Lyon provided some resistance at the end of the fourth day but the former was left stranded on 81 as the tourists were bowled out for 241 in their second innings.

All 20 of Australia's wickets had fallen to spin - the first time that has happened in a Test match since 'Laker's match' at Old Trafford in 1956.

It consigned the tourists to an inevitable defeat heading into the second of four Tests beginning on Saturday in Hyderabad.

India were left with a victory target of just 50, which they chased down with ease despite the losses of openers Murali Vijay (6) and Virender Sehwag (19).

All of Vijay's runs came via a down-the-ground maximum but he was first man out when he picked out Henriques at short mid-off following a mistimed a drive off James Pattinson.

Sehwag fell when he edged to Michael Clarke at first slip as he defended the spin of Lyon, but at that point the hosts needed just 14 more runs to complete the win.

And few in the Chennai crowd were disappointed when Sachin Tendulkar came to the crease, with the India superstar (13 not out) heaving his first two balls off Lyon for six.

He could not make it a hat-trick to win the game, but an edge for a single from Cheteshwar Pujara (8no) did the job.

Earlier, Lyon could not help Henriques reach a debut century as Australia could only add nine to their overnight score.

Lyon's stout defence helped to repel the Indian bowlers for around 20 minutes before he was finally caught by Vijay at short-leg off Ravindra Jadeja for 11.
