Perennial bridesmaids Somerset failed again in a major tournament as Surrey won a rain-affected Clydesdale Bank 40 final by five wickets at Lord's.

After finishing runner-up in four limited overs competitions in the past three years, including last year's 40-over final, Somerset made if five near misses as they tasted yet more final heartbreak.

The Westcountry outfit have also come close twice in the County Championship - missing out last season on the final day as they became county cricket's 'nearly men'.

Hopes had been high for Somerset fans, especially as skipper Marcus Trescothick was passed fit for the final, and he elected to bat after winning the toss.

He went early though and only Jos Buttler's 86 helped them to an almost-respectable total of 214 all out, with Jade Dernbach taking 4-30 after making the dash from Cardiff where he played for England on Friday night.

Rain

Surrey had reached 46-2 after seven overs of their reply when the rain set in at Lord's, and although it seemed like it could well be rained off, play resumed at 4.45pm with Surrey's target reduced to 186 from 30 overs on the Duckworth-Lewis method.

Surrey skipper Rory Hamilton-Brown knuckled down after his side lost their third wicket and his innings of 78 from 62 balls kept them right on track for victory, along with an enterprising 26 from Chris Schofield.

Surrey had remarkably only lost one game in the entire CB40 campaign, and they never really looked like losing out in their run chase, with Zander de Bruyn (17no) and Matthew Spriegel (24no) seeing them home safely.

Somerset captain Trescothick was included in his team's line-up in spite of an ankle injury, but managed just 15 off 17 balls before being stumped when charging at spinner Spriegel.

Craig Kieswetter and Peter Trego then both scored 16 before they were out in similar circumstances, and Somerset's problems deepened further when James Hildreth (three) was bowled by a Chris Schofield straight ball before Arul Suppiah (11) was trapped lbw by veteran spinner Gareth Batty.

That left Somerset in trouble with more than half the innings still remaining, but Buttler joined Nick Compton and the pair looked to be warming to their task as they added 45 for the sixth wicket before another untimely dismissal.

Compton had been watchful in his 26 from 41 balls but he was left grumbling to himself as he walked off after missing an ill-advised reverse sweep off Zafar Ansari.

Buttler did his part but with little support from the tail, although he did still manage some late hitting to take his side past 200 before Dernbach found his stumps with four balls left.
