Marlon Samuels: matched his compatriot's efforts by reaching three figures

Chris Gayle: hit nine sixes to thrill his home crowd with a ton at Sabina Park

Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels both struck centuries to help West Indies double their lead in the one-day series against New Zealand.

Opener Gayle thrilled his home crowd at Sabina Park with 125 from just 107 deliveries, his whirlwind innings including an incredible nine sixes.

While Samuels didn't quite match his fellow Jamaican's fireworks he did get through to three figures, finishing up unbeaten on 101 to help the hosts post a formidable total of 315-5.

The duo built a 129-run stand for the third wicket following the departures of Lendl Simmons (three) and Dwayne Smith (28).

Delicate fashion

Gayle blasted three maximums in one over from seamer Kyle Mills on his way to bringing up his 20th ODI century. He reached the landmark from 88 balls and in rather more delicate fashion, tickling a sweep for four off Kane Williamson.

Eventually Mills ended the left-hander's onslaught thanks to Tom Latham's catch in the deep and although Samuels did progress through to his ton in the final over, West Indies failed to fully capitalise on such a superb start.

Tim Southee finished with figures of 3-55, including removing the dangerous pairing of Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo in the closing stages of the innings.

However New Zealand never really threatened in their reply, despite half-centuries from opener Martin Guptill and captain Kane Williamson.

Defiant

BJ Watling did his best to carry the Kiwis close with a defiant 72 not out before he ran out of partners, the Black Caps losing their last six wickets for 65 to be dismissed for 260.

Ravi Rampaul was the pick of the Windies' bowlers, taking 3-50 including the early dismissal of Rob Nicol (15) as the hosts kept their opponents comfortably below the asking rate in the early overs.

Guptill (51) and Williamson, who hit six fours and a six in his knock of 58, patiently attempted to lay a platform for a late assault, but, when both fell soon after reaching their fifties, the tourists' hopes evaporated.

New Zealand now have to win the next match, which takes place in St Kitts on Wednesday, to remain alive in the series.
