India sealed a 1-0 Test series win over New Zealand with an emphatic innings and 198-run victory in the deciding game at Nagpur.

After two drawn Tests, the third and final battle became a winner-takes-all affair, and it was the hosts that stepped up on the fourth day to complete a comprehensive victory.

The Black Caps were always up against it after being skittled out for just 193 in their first innings, with India then piling up 566-8 in response.

Daniel Vettori's men started the fourth day on 24-1 and facing a tough battle with 349 more runs needed just to make the home side bat again.

However, they lost seven cheap wickets in the opening session to crumble to 124-8, while Ishant Sharma wrapped up the tail soon after lunch to hand the hosts a memorable victory.

Wickets tumble

Brendon McCullum went first as he was trapped lbw by Pragyan Ojha for 25, with the score on 38-2, and the signs looked ominous for the tourists.

That feeling worsened as New Zealand lost their third wicket without adding to the score as Martin Guptill fell in the same manner to the same bowler, for a first-ball duck at the start of Ojha's next over.

Harbhajan Singh rooted out Gareth Hopkins (8) and Ross Taylor (29) before Kane Williamson (8) was bowled by Sharma to leave New Zealand on 110-6 and in deep trouble.

Jesse Ryder succumbed for 22 to the off-spin of Suresh Raina, and Raina then struck again to remove New Zealand captain Vettori for 13.

And the final blows were dealt a few overs after lunch, with Sharma - who began a fresh spell replacing Ojha - bowling out the last two batsmen in back-to-back deliveries, Tim Southee for 31 and Chris Martin for a duck.
