Leicestershire Foxes' Clydesdale Bank 40 match against Essex Eagles at Grace Road was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Steady rain which began in mid-morning, left the outfield saturated and, after a 3.30pm inspection, umpires Nigel Llong and Mark Eggleston decided there was little hope of conditions improving.

It was a blow to England batsmen Alastair Cook and Ravi Bopara, who had both been named in the Essex team and were looking for further match practice ahead of the first Test against the West Indies, starting on May 17.

The washout denied Leicestershire the chance to build on their performance against Lancashire on Sunday when they narrowly failed to chase down a target of 297, losing by five runs.
