Shah, the second highest run-scorer in this year's IPL with 268 in seven games, fell to the last ball of the innings when he was caught behind by Dhoni off Nuwan Kulasekara.
Chasing 147 for victory opener Faf du Plessis clobbered 73 off 52 balls, including two sixes and six fours, to put Chennai in position.
Du Plessis put on half-century stands with Subramaniam Badrinath (15) and Suresh Raina (26), before Dhoni, partnered by Dwayne Bravo carried the home side over the line .Indian Premier League. Click here to bet.
