Kings XI Punjab kept themselves right in the race to make the Indian Premier League play-offs with a six-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings.

The returning Adam Gilchrist made an unbeaten half-century as the Kings XI moved to within a point of their fourth-placed opponents in the table.

The former Australia international hit two sixes and nine fours in his knock of 64 not out to help his side chase down a target of 121 with 21 balls to spare.

Mandeep Singh (24) helped put on a 51-run opening stand with Gilchrist, who was back to lead the Kings XI after overcoming a hamstring injury.

Seamers shine

The skipper would have been delighted with the effort of his seam-heavy attack earlier in the day, too, as Praveen Kumar, Azhar Mahmood and Parvinder Awana all claimed two wickets apiece to restrict Chennai.

Kumar (2-18) combined with wicketkeeper Gilchrist to dismiss openers Murali Vijay and Mike Hussey in his opening spell as the Super Kings at one stage slipped to 46-4.

Dwayne Bravo led a recovery mission with 48 from 43 balls, the West Indian all-rounder belting three sixes and a pair of fours.

But although Ravindra Jadeja (13) and Albie Morkel, who made 14 from just eight deliveries, did offer some support, a final total of 120-7 never looked likely to be enough for Chennai.
