Joe Root celebrated his inclusion in the England Test squad by taking his score to 179 for England Lions in the draw against New Zealand at Grace Road.

Lions captain Root was named on Saturday in the 12-man squad for the first Test starting at Lord's on Thursday and his form would certainly merit a place in the side.

The Yorkshire batsman took his season's tally to 646 runs in four innings with his six-and-a-quarter-hour knock against the Black Caps.

With that first Test and then a second on his home ground at Headingley to come, it is conceivable that Root could yet become the first Englishman in 75 years, and only the sixth ever, to pass 1,000 runs by the end of May.

Root's Yorkshire and England teammate Jonathan Bairstow made 68 before he fell lbw to seamer Trent Boult.

Root's lengthy innings was finally ended when Black Caps paceman Doug Bracewell got one past a forward defensive shot to knock over his off stump.

All-rounder Ravi Bopara made an unbeaten 42 as the game ended in rainy stalemate, the Lions making 444-7 in reply to New Zealand's first innings 285.
