The Titans missed out on the chance to clinch a place in the semi-finals of the Champions League as they suffered a 99-run defeat at the hands of the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Despite conceding 188-5 after putting their opponents in, the South African side were 51-1 at one stage of their reply at Newlands in Cape Town.

However they collapsed in dramatic fashion on a sticky pitch, losing three wickets in the space of four deliveries without adding to their score.

Lakshmipathy Balaji claimed two of them and then also dismissed the dangerous duo of Farhaan Behardien and Roelof der Merwe, giving the experienced seamer excellent figures of 4-19 from his four overs.

The Titans were eventually skittled for 89 in 16.4 overs, though their hopes of making the knockout stages remain alive with one game left to go in Group A.

Already out of the running to make the last four, Kolkata played with complete freedom knowing they will soon be heading home.

Openers Manvinder Bisla (27) and Gautam Gambhir (44) gave them an excellent start before Brendon McCullum came in to blast 36 from just 20 deliveries.

Yet the New Zealander's innings was overshadowed by the efforts of Debabrata Das, who came in following the departure of Yusuf Pathan for a first-ball duck to belt an unbeaten 42 in a hurry.

Alfonso Thomas took some particularly heavy punishment, the seamer's four overs going for 52 as the Knight Riders compiled the biggest score seen so far in this year's tournament.
