Heavy rain in Pallekele caused the abandonment of the first one-day international between Sri Lanka and New Zealand without a ball being bowled.

Umpires Ian Gould and Ranmore Martinesz took the decision after it became clear the weather was not going to clear up in time for a reduced-overs contest.

The one-off Twenty20 international between the two sides at the same venue two days earlier also ended in a no-result due to rain, although at least on that occasion 16 overs of action were possible.

The five-match one-day international series continues in Colombo on November 4.
