Day one - Derby
Somerset 180-5 (N J Edwards 94) v Derbyshire
The decision of Somerset captain Justin Langer to bat after winning the toss against Derbyshire looked to be on decidedly shaky ground at stumps on the opening day in Derby.
After initially finding themselves on 140 for one, Somerset eventually slumped to 180 for five by the close, with Ant Botha doing most of the damage with three for 36 from 12 overs.
With showers suspending the start of play until just after 3pm, Langer's decision was likely based on predicted adverse batting conditions, stemming from the fact that Derbyshire played Glamorgan on the same ground as recently as Monday.
Openers Marcus Trescothick - who had earlier ruled himself out of England's winter tours - and Neil Edwards shared an opening stand of 78.
But Trescothick made just 18 before edging a drive off Tom Lungley, with Langer (22) then slicing into the hands of Graham Wagg.
Edwards hit 16 fours on his way to an eventual 94, with Derbyshire claiming two more wickets in the shape of James Hildreth (13) and Cameron White (7).
