Lancashire Lightning chased down a target of 254 with one ball to spare to claim a five-wicket victory against Warwickshire Bears in Saturday's Pro40 Division One match.

A rapid opening stand of 122 between Gareth Cross (76) and Paul Horton (47) put the Red Rose county in control of the required run-rate.

And solid contributions from VVS Laxman (50), Steven Croft (39) and Dominic Cork (21no) allowed Lancashire to get home from the fifth ball of the final over.

Batting paradise

Earlier, Warwickshire posted a formidable total of 253-7 after Darren Maddy opted to bat first at Edgbaston.

Opening batsman Neil Carter blasted 16 fours and two sixes during 92 from 64 balls to set the platform for a big score.

Lancashire did manage to stem the flow of runs slightly with the introduction of spin duo Gary Keedy and Simon Marshall, whose combined 16 overs went for 66.

Leg-spinner Marshall was the most successful bowler with 3-36, while Sajid Mahmood claimed 2-47.

The result moves Lancashire up to fifth in the Division One table, but Warwickshire are now level on three points with Northamptonshire at the bottom.
