T20 Big Bash
Bellerive Oval, Hobart
Xavier Doherty's hat-trick helped Hobart Hurricanes to a convincing 30-run Big Bash win over Sydney Thunder.
The Thunder still had hopes of a first victory when they started the 17th over needing 57 runs off the final 24 balls.
But from 121-4 they slumped to 121-7 as the Australian spinner put the contest in Hobart beyond doubt.
First he had Simon Keen caught at cover, second he had Ryan Carters stumped after a dance down the wicket and, with his hat-trick ball, Doherty trapped Cameron Borgas leg before even though replays showed it was missing off-stump.
From there, the winless Thunder limped to 147-9 from their 20 overs as the Hurricanes completed an easy victory to move them onto four points after two wins and two losses.
The home side had set their impressive total after a superb 111 first-wicket partnership between skipper Ricky Ponting and wicket-keeper Tim Paine.
Ponting was eventually dismissed by Chris Gayle for 63 in the 13th over with Paine following soon after for 40.
But, after a brief wobble, the Hurricanes smashed 61 off their last five overs with Owais Shah hitting 26 off 16 and George Bailey blasting 30 off just 13.
Their total of 177-4 proved more than enough and condemned Thunder to their fourth straight defeat.
